GTA VI’s Vice City is Rockstar’s fictionalized Miami. The wider fictional state of Leonida is a satirical version of Florida, stretching from South Beach-style urban districts to Florida Keys islands, Everglades-like wetlands, rural communities and protected uplands. Rockstar compresses and rearranges geography, so recognizable places are inspirations rather than a 1:1 map.
The short answer: Miami inside a fictional Florida
Vice City is the modern return of the Miami analogue established by the 2002 game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. In GTA VI, the city sits inside Leonida, a fictional state Rockstar uses to represent Florida as a whole. That distinction explains why trailers show both dense coastal neighborhoods and environments that clearly do not belong to a conventional city: offshore islands, marinas, airboats, alligators, wetlands, rural roads and parkland.

Rockstar has officially named several Leonida regions, including Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia. The official names establish fictional game locations, not direct legal or geographic equivalents. South Beach, the Florida Keys and the Everglades are the strongest real-world anchors visible in the material released so far. Other parallels, such as Gulf Coast or inland Florida counterparts, are reasonable interpretations but have not been confirmed at county or town level.

How the fictional map corresponds to real Florida
| GTA VI region or feature | Real-world reference | Evidence | How closely to read the match |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Miami and South Florida | Established series setting; trailer landmark comparisons; Rockstar comments about Miami | Recognizable visual and cultural analogue, not an exact street map |
| South Beach-style waterfront | Ocean Drive and the Art Deco Historic District | Visual comparison by the Miami Design Preservation League’s Daniel Ciraldo, quoted by Axios in 2023 | Architecture and streetscape are deliberately evocative; some buildings appear out of order |
| Causeways and skyline districts | Venetian Causeway, MacArthur Causeway, Brickell and nearby Miami districts | Landmark comparison of trailer imagery | Major visual references are recognizable, but placement is rearranged |
| Leonida Keys | Florida Keys | Official Rockstar region name; island-chain setting, bridges and marinas | Fictionalized island chain; no official island-by-island overlay |
| Grassrivers | Everglades and South Florida wetlands | Official region name; airboats, alligators and wetland imagery | Condensed game region rather than a navigable reproduction of Everglades National Park |
| Port Gellhorn | Possibly Gulf Coast or another Florida coastal setting | Officially named region, but no detailed real-world match confirmed | Use as an interpretation, not a factual one-to-one identification |
| Ambrosia | Possibly rural or inland Florida | Officially named region, with limited public geographic detail | Exact counterpart is not established |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | Florida upland or park environments | Included in Rockstar’s broader Leonida presentation | Environmental comparison only; no confirmed real park equivalent |
Vice City’s Miami references
South Beach and Ocean Drive
The clearest urban reference is Miami Beach’s South Beach, especially the Art Deco hotel strip along Ocean Drive. The pastel façades, rounded corners, horizontal “speed lines,” porthole windows, rooftop signs and dense line of hotels are visual shorthand for Miami. GTA VI’s coastal scenes use that same combination of bright architecture, heavy traffic, nightlife branding and immediate access to sand and water.
These similarities are intentional without being architectural documentation. Daniel Ciraldo, executive director of the Miami Design Preservation League, told Axios in 2023 that the depictions were exciting and appeared to take “the best of South Florida from the Everglades to South Beach and everything in between.” He also cautioned that the architecture, while realistic, places some buildings out of order or on the wrong block. That observation is useful: the game is recreating the visual identity of the district, not surveying every parcel.
Venetian and MacArthur causeways
Miami’s causeways are another prominent source. The Venetian Causeway links Miami and Miami Beach through a chain of small islands, while the MacArthur Causeway carries larger volumes of traffic between downtown Miami, the port area and the beach. Their bridges, water views, palms and skyline sightlines make them ideal game routes and recognizable trailer references.

In Vice City, Rockstar can place a bridge where it creates the best approach to a skyline, beach or mission location. A causeway that looks like a mixture of the Venetian and MacArthur routes should be treated as a composite rather than evidence that the game reproduces either road exactly.
Brickell and the modern skyline
Brickell supplies the high-rise, finance-and-nightlife side of Miami’s identity. Glass towers, dense residential construction, waterfront roads and illuminated signs contrast with the low-rise Art Deco district. Including both environments lets Rockstar move between old and new versions of the city without leaving the Miami template.
The relationship is thematic as much as visual. Miami’s real skyline is a patchwork of downtown, Brickell, Miami Beach and separate waterfront municipalities. Vice City compresses those distinctions so players can reach contrasting districts quickly. A tower or street that resembles Brickell may sit next to an area that, in reality, would be farther away or across a different body of water.
Wynwood and street-level culture
Wynwood is associated with murals, galleries, converted industrial buildings, bars and an intensely photographed street scene. Trailer comparisons have identified Wynwood-like references among Vice City’s recognizable Miami elements. Rockstar can use that visual language for dense pedestrian areas, nightlife, advertising and social-media satire.

Wynwood should not be read as a complete neighborhood simulation. The game’s signs, murals and businesses are fictional, and the boundaries between Wynwood-style streets, downtown blocks and other districts can be redrawn to support missions and free exploration.
Leonida Keys: the Florida Keys in fictional form
The Leonida Keys are Rockstar’s clearest island-chain analogue. Their defining ingredients—long bridges, low-lying islands, marinas, boats, palms and buildings shaped by coastal exposure—match the Florida Keys far more closely than any ordinary mainland suburb.
The Florida Keys are a connected arc of islands extending southwest from the Florida peninsula. Communities such as Key Largo, Marathon and Key West have distinct identities, but the chain as a whole is linked by bridges and causeways with water visible on both sides. A game version can combine those features into a smaller number of explorable islands, giving players the sensation of a long ocean journey without reproducing every mile.
Rockstar has not published an island-by-island correspondence. A particular marina, bridge or settlement may borrow from several Keys locations, and a name that sounds like a real place does not establish a direct match. The safest conclusion is that the Leonida Keys represent the Florida Keys as a regional idea.
What to look for in Keys-inspired scenes
- Bridge travel: long elevated approaches and open-water horizons evoke the Overseas Highway experience.
- Marinas: docks, fuel stations, fishing boats and tour vessels reflect the Keys’ boating economy.
- Low-rise construction: the absence of a continuous high-rise wall distinguishes the islands from Vice City’s urban core.
- Coastal vulnerability: narrow strips of land and exposed roads communicate the physical limits of island development.
Grassrivers and the Everglades
Grassrivers is the strongest wetland reference in the announced map. Trailer imagery discussed by Axios includes airboats, alligators and broad marsh landscapes—the combination most viewers will associate with the Everglades and the freshwater wetlands of South Florida.
The Everglades is not simply a swamp with a few trails. It is a huge, shallow, slow-moving wetland system containing sawgrass marshes, mangrove areas, tree islands and waterways. GTA VI turns that complexity into a playable region with readable routes, encounter spaces and room for vehicles. As a result, Grassrivers should be understood as a condensed fictional environment, not as a driveable version of Everglades National Park.
Airboats are an especially strong cultural and visual cue. Their flat bottoms and elevated propellers allow movement across shallow vegetation, and they are closely associated with South Florida wetland tourism and local transport. Alligators reinforce the reference immediately, but the presence of either does not identify a specific park boundary or real settlement.

Why the wetlands matter to the setting
Grassrivers broadens the meaning of Vice City. Miami is often represented through beaches, towers and nightlife; the wetlands show the ecological world that surrounds the metropolitan area. That contrast supports Rockstar’s Florida satire: luxury development, back-country commerce, wildlife, boats and infrastructure coexist within a single exaggerated state.

Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga
Rockstar’s official Leonida presentation also names Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia and includes Mount Kalaga National Park. Public material establishes them as GTA VI regions but does not provide enough detail to assign each one to a specific Florida county, city or protected area.
Port Gellhorn
Port Gellhorn’s name and coastal context invite comparisons with Florida’s Gulf Coast or other working waterfronts. That is an environmental and economic interpretation, not a confirmed identification. Until Rockstar supplies a map or description, it is more accurate to call the region a fictional Florida port than to label it as Tampa, Fort Myers, Pensacola or another real city.
Ambrosia
Ambrosia appears among the named Leonida areas, but detailed public information about its layout and landmarks is limited. It may represent rural, agricultural or inland Florida settings, yet no specific county-level match has been established. Readers should distinguish what the name confirms—a fictional region—from what landscape comparisons might suggest.
Mount Kalaga National Park
Florida is not known for alpine mountains, so “Mount” should not be interpreted as proof of a literal Florida mountain range. The name may support an exaggerated upland, park or elevated interior environment created for variety. Rockstar’s wider Leonida presentation establishes the park as part of the fictional state, while its exact real-world inspiration remains unconfirmed.
Why GTA VI does not use a 1:1 Florida map
Rockstar designs a world for movement, missions and visual rhythm rather than cadastral accuracy. A faithful Florida map would contain long stretches of water, suburbs, protected land and roads that are difficult to turn into varied gameplay. Compressing distances lets players move from a high-rise district to a wetland, island chain or rural road within a practical play session.
Compression also enables satire. A single fictional street can place a luxury tower beside a run-down motel, a marina and a viral-video backdrop, even if those combinations would be separated in real South Florida. The resulting map communicates relationships—wealth beside vulnerability, tourism beside wildlife, old architecture beside speculative development—more efficiently than a literal survey could.

No authoritative source has published a percentage measuring GTA VI’s geographic fidelity to Florida. Claims that the map is “mostly accurate” or “a certain percentage of Miami” go beyond the evidence. The strongest conclusion is qualitative: the game uses recognizable landmarks and environmental signatures while changing names, order, scale and layout.
The 2002 Vice City connection
GTA VI continues a tradition that began with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, released in 2002 and set in 1986. That earlier game drew heavily on Miami’s popular image and on crime stories associated with the city. Documented influences included Miami Vice, Scarface and Carlito’s Way, and Rockstar teams conducted field-research trips to Miami.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Producer Leslie Benzies described Miami as “a party town, all sun and sea and sex, but with that same dark edge underneath.” That phrase captures the original game’s organizing contrast: glamour and danger occupy the same streets. GTA VI inherits the contrast but updates the setting from an explicitly 1986 lens to a contemporary Florida shaped by smartphones, online fame, influencer culture, modern development and current political absurdity.
What remains recognizable from the earlier game
- Neon coastal nightlife: bright signs, clubs, hotels and beachfront roads remain central to Vice City’s identity.
- Art Deco modernism: the low-rise pastel architecture still signals Miami Beach immediately.
- Crime-fiction framing: criminal ambition, corrupt institutions and social class remain part of the city’s dramatic vocabulary.
- Sunshine over menace: cheerful weather and leisure culture coexist with violence, scams and instability.
The new game should not be mistaken for a remake of the 1986 setting. Its world is contemporary, and the broader Leonida geography gives Rockstar room to portray Florida beyond the city.

In a 2026 interview with EL PAÍS, Rockstar’s Rob Nelson described GTA VI as taking place in “the fictional state of Leonida, a deformed version of Florida.” He also referred to “the stories of Miami” and cited crime-fiction writers Elmore Leonard and Charles Willeford among influences on the game’s story world.
That wording matters because it frames Leonida as a distorted cultural version of Florida, not merely a renamed map. “Deformed” signals satire and transformation: real institutions, landscapes and social types are recognizable but exaggerated. The reference to Miami stories also extends beyond buildings to the city’s crime narratives, local characters and long-running reputation in American popular culture.
How to classify a suspected real-world match
When comparing screenshots or trailer footage with Florida, use the evidence level rather than treating every resemblance as confirmed. The following framework prevents overclaiming:
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
| Evidence level | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Officially named region | Rockstar has supplied the fictional name and included it in Leonida’s presentation | Leonida Keys or Grassrivers |
| Visible landmark comparison | A recognizable structure or streetscape resembles a real place in released footage | Ocean Drive-style Art Deco hotels or Miami causeways |
| Creator interview | A Rockstar representative explains the state, city or cultural influence | Rob Nelson’s Florida description in EL PAÍS |
| Expert observation | A specialist identifies architectural or geographic echoes while noting alterations | Daniel Ciraldo’s Axios comments about realistic architecture in rearranged locations |
| Fan inference | A resemblance is proposed without an official statement or strong landmark evidence | Assigning an unnamed inland district to a particular Florida county |
Only the first four categories provide a solid basis for an article’s factual description. Fan theories can be interesting, but they should be labeled as theories and never presented as Rockstar’s official map.
What the setting says about Florida
Leonida’s design works because Florida contains unusually sharp contrasts in a relatively compact region. International tourism and luxury real estate exist alongside fragile wetlands. Historic low-rise districts sit near glass towers. Island communities depend on bridges, boats and visitors, while inland areas follow different rhythms of work and travel.
Rockstar turns those contrasts into a connected satire. South Beach supplies the globally recognizable façade; Brickell and downtown provide the modern financial skyline; the Keys add island tourism and marine infrastructure; Grassrivers introduces wildlife and marshland; rural and park regions broaden the state beyond the postcard image. The result is not a documentary of Florida but a collection of exaggerated truths arranged for play.

Is GTA VI actually set in Miami?
It is set in Vice City, Rockstar’s fictionalized Miami analogue. The surrounding state is Leonida, Rockstar’s fictionalized Florida. Real Miami landmarks and districts inspire the city, but the game does not claim to reproduce Miami street for street.
Are the Leonida Keys the real Florida Keys?
They are a fictional counterpart based on the Florida Keys’ island-chain geography, bridges, marinas and low-rise coastal development. Rockstar has not published an exact island-by-island match.
Is Grassrivers the Everglades?
Grassrivers clearly draws on the Everglades and South Florida wetlands, as indicated by airboats, alligators and marsh scenery. It is a condensed game region, not a complete simulation of Everglades National Park.
Can a GTA VI building be identified as a real Miami building?
Some buildings and streetscapes visibly echo Miami, especially South Beach’s Art Deco corridor. However, comparisons can show buildings in a different order or on a different block, so resemblance does not prove an exact address.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does Leonida include every part of Florida?
No. Leonida is a selective, compressed fictional state. Its named regions represent different Florida environments and cultural ideas, while many real counties, towns and ecosystems are absent or combined.
Is GTA VI’s map a 1:1 version of Miami and the Keys?
No authoritative source supports that claim. The available evidence points to recognizable visual references and substantial fictional rearrangement rather than a one-to-one overlay.
Bottom line
GTA VI’s Vice City is based primarily on Miami, especially South Beach, Ocean Drive, Miami’s causeways, Brickell and Wynwood. Leonida expands the idea into a fictional Florida that includes a Keys-inspired island chain, Everglades-like wetlands and additional regions whose exact counterparts remain unconfirmed. Rockstar’s goal is recognizable atmosphere and satire, not cartographic duplication: treat every landmark as an inspiration unless the studio explicitly identifies it as a real-world match.
