What Is Google’s Operating System? ChromeOS, Android and Googlebook OS

ChromeOS is Google’s operating system for Chromebooks, while Android is separate. Googlebook OS, announced in September 2026, brings together ChromeOS and Android technology, with migration details still pending.

There is no single product officially named “Google operating system.” Google’s Chromebook operating system is ChromeOS; Android is a separate operating system. Google also announced Googlebook OS in September 2026 as a new system bringing together ChromeOS and Android technology, but the announcement did not establish that existing Chromebook owners can migrate to it now.

What operating system does a Chromebook use?

Google says Chromebooks run ChromeOS. That is the clearest answer when someone asks for Google’s computer operating system. ChromeOS is more than the Chrome browser: Google describes Chrome as being at the heart of a platform that includes web apps and browser extensions. Web apps can be installed, pinned and launched like other apps. Google’s ChromeOS web apps documentation explains that platform model.

ChromeOS is designed around that web experience, but its app options are not limited to websites. Depending on the device and its configuration, users may also be able to run Android apps and Linux applications.

How is ChromeOS different from Android?

ChromeOS and Android are separate Google operating systems, not interchangeable names for one system. Google’s Chrome Management API lists them as distinct system values: SYSTEM_CROS and SYSTEM_ANDROID. That classification distinguishes the products; it does not mean they share no technology.

Linux on ChromeOS provides another option: users can run Linux applications alongside the regular desktop, with graphical apps available from the Launcher. Availability varies by device and setup, and not every app works on every Chromebook.

  • ChromeOS: Google’s operating system for Chromebooks, with a prominent web-app experience and support for additional app environments on supported devices.
  • Android: A separate Google operating system, also used to identify Android devices and app compatibility.

For details on those capabilities, see Google’s Android development on ChromeOS and Linux on ChromeOS documentation.

What is Googlebook OS?

On September 23, 2026, Google announced Googlebook OS as a new operating system bringing together ChromeOS and the Android tech stack. Google described Googlebooks as a new line of devices, with an initial consumer rollout. The name therefore matters in a current definition of Google’s operating systems, but it does not mean existing Chromebooks have all changed systems.

In its September 23, 2026 announcement, Google said a comprehensive management experience was planned to begin rolling out in the second half of 2027. It said commercial migration paths and device eligibility details would be shared later. The announcement does not establish that Chromebook users can migrate now, which devices will qualify, or how commercial customers will move to Googlebook OS.

How long does a Chromebook receive updates?

Google’s current Auto Update policy states that devices receive 10 years of updates, covering the operating system, browser and hardware. This is a policy statement, not a promise that every Chromebook has the same remaining support period: check the auto-update end date for the exact model. Google also notes that some devices released before 2021 and receiving extended updates may not support certain features or services. See Google’s Auto Update policy for the policy and device-specific information.

What to check when considering a Chromebook

The operating-system name alone cannot tell you whether a particular Chromebook fits your needs. Check the model’s update eligibility, the apps you rely on, and whether the device supports the Android or Linux capabilities you need. Google’s announcement has not yet specified Googlebook OS eligibility or commercial migration paths, so do not assume a current Chromebook can move to the new system.

Google’s Chromebook overview addresses the common question of how Chromebooks differ from Windows and Mac computers. The distinction depends on the specific device and workflow; the operating-system names alone do not establish which is faster, safer, or better for every user.
