What Is Frontline Intelligence, and How Can Businesses Use It?

Frontline intelligence can mean capturing workers’ observations or using AI to guide hands-on tasks. Learn how to distinguish the approaches and choose a workflow.

Frontline intelligence is a way to turn what workers closest to customers and operations observe into information the business can act on. The phrase is also used by some vendors for AI that guides workers during hands-on tasks. These are related but distinct approaches: one helps a business learn from frontline people; the other helps them carry out work.

What does “frontline intelligence” mean?

There is no single cross-industry definition established by the sources cited here. In practice, the phrase can describe two different capabilities, so businesses should clarify which problem they mean before choosing a tool.

Intelligence from frontline people

Employees who interact directly with customers, products, and day-to-day operations can notice unmet needs, recurring friction, workarounds, availability problems, and emerging risks. Frontline intelligence in this sense means collecting those observations with enough context to route them to people who can respond. Pulz describes its platform as capturing what people see, hear, and experience, exploring context, and turning it into useful business intelligence; that is the vendor’s description of its offering, not independent evidence of results. AI guidance during frontline work

Some vendors use the term for technology that interprets a hands-on task and provides assistance while it is happening. Strivr calls its offering “Frontline Intelligence,” describing it as “an AI-powered intelligence layer that supports workers while work is happening.” That is Strivr’s product formulation, not a universal industry standard. Its description refers to visual understanding, workflow context, smart glasses, and real-time guidance. Strivr’s product page

How can businesses use frontline intelligence?

Find operational and customer signals

Give workers a practical way to report repeated customer complaints, confusing processes, workarounds, product reactions, stock or availability issues, execution gaps, and potential risks. A useful report records what happened, where and when it happened, how often it occurs, what the worker or customer was trying to do, and what might help. Without that context, a stream of comments can be difficult to investigate or prioritize.

Plan an action path as well as a capture method: identify who reviews reports, who owns a response, and how workers will learn what happened next. Pulz describes guided conversations for capturing observations and context and routing resulting intelligence to people able to act. This is a vendor-described capability, not an independently measured outcome. Pulz’s platform page

Support accurate execution of hands-on tasks

For an appropriate workflow, visual AI may identify steps that are missed, incorrect, incomplete, or out of sequence and offer guidance during the task. Strivr describes this as an approach for work where execution errors or slow access to support can affect quality, safety, speed, or cost. Its cited use cases span logistics, manufacturing, field services, retail, healthcare, and quick-service restaurants. These are vendor-described use cases and intended benefits, not independently measured results. Strivr’s product page Strivr’s use-case discussion

Connect work to everyday tools

Communications, scheduling, approvals, task lists, and digitized processes can help observations or task support reach the right people. Microsoft documents frontline uses of Microsoft 365 tools including Lists, Planner, Approvals, and Shifts. Those tools can support a broader operating approach; Microsoft’s documentation does not present Microsoft 365 as a standalone frontline-intelligence system. Microsoft 365 for frontline workers

Which workflows are worth considering?

For AI support during hands-on work, Strivr proposes a vendor-authored “CHECK” screening framework. It is a useful prompt for discussion, not an independently validated assessment.

  • Critical: Incorrect execution affects quality, safety, throughput, cost, or customer experience.
  • Hands-on: The worker needs to focus, move, or use both hands.
  • Error-prone: Small mistakes can create rework, delays, waste, or safety risks.
  • Compliance-driven: Work depends on consistent quality, safety, or regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge-dependent: Success relies on memory, tacit know-how, or access to experienced staff.

For collecting observations, ask whether workers can report signals without unreasonable effort, whether reports retain useful context, and whether a person with the authority to address the issue is responsible for follow-up. A technology that gathers information but leaves it ownerless is unlikely to resolve the underlying problem.

How should a business choose an approach?

Compare the options against the work to be done, rather than treating “frontline intelligence” as a single product category.

Decision point Questions to ask
Signal captured Do you need employee observations, customer or market observations, operational data, or visibility into task execution?
Context quality Can the system preserve location, timing, workflow step, frequency, and a useful explanation?
Action path Who receives the information, how quickly, and who owns the response?
Workflow fit Will reporting or in-task guidance interrupt work? For hands-free systems, are the task and environment suitable for the device?
Operational integration How will the approach work with existing communications, scheduling, approvals, process documentation, and other systems?
Risk and governance Who can access the data, how long is it retained, how are workers informed, and what happens if a recommendation is wrong? The sources cited here do not establish jurisdiction-specific legal requirements, so those need separate review.
Evidence Is an outcome a vendor objective, a customer case, an independent evaluation, or a result measured in your own pilot?

For AI-based guidance, also verify the actual supported hardware and workflow fit. Strivr describes smart glasses as its delivery method, but the cited material does not identify a compatible retail model; do not assume any glasses or other generic device will work with a service.

How can a business test whether it helps?

Start with one workflow where the problem, affected workers, and decision owner are clear. Record a baseline before rollout, choose measures that match the problem, and involve the workers who will use or be affected by the system in its design. Possible measures include time to resolve reported issues, repeat issue rate, rework, process completion, safety events, customer outcomes, and worker burden. Select only the measures relevant to the workflow; the cited sources do not establish a typical financial return, a causal improvement in safety or error rates, or a generally applicable retention uplift from adopting these products.

In a March 2022 survey of US frontline employees and managers, McKinsey and Cara Plus defined frontline employees as hourly individual contributors making $22 per hour or less across selected industries. Among frontline employees who applied for advancement opportunities, 40 percent achieved a raise or incremental responsibility, and fewer than 25 percent received a promotion or new role. Those are survey findings about advancement, not evidence of software effectiveness or technology return on investment. McKinsey’s survey discussion

A July 2026 Harvard Business Review article by organizational psychologist Constance Noonan Hadley and BCG managing director Deborah Lovich argues that frontline employees can see barriers to organizational performance that traditional engagement surveys may not surface or translate into action. This is an expert argument, not a quantified impact evaluation. Harvard Business Review
