To protect your data from prompt injection, limit what an AI system can access, keep authorization in application code, treat outside content as untrusted, and require validation or approval before sensitive actions. Prompt wording and detection tools can help, but no single control makes an application immune.
What is prompt injection, and how can it put data at risk?
Prompt injection is an attempt to alter an AI system’s behavior by placing instructions in material it processes. OWASP describes both direct injection, which arrives in a user’s prompt, and indirect injection, which arrives in external content such as a webpage or file. The instructions may be difficult for a person to notice even when the model processes them.

In a vulnerable workflow, an application may place sensitive context near user text or outside material. The model may misinterpret an embedded instruction, and its response or a connected capability may then disclose information or cause an action. NIST describes the underlying challenge in retrieval systems: “Using LLMs in retrieval tasks has blurred the data and instruction channels to an LLM.” That observation does not mean every retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system is exploitable; it highlights why applications must distinguish content from authority.
The possible impact depends on the application: what information is in reach, what tools the model can invoke, and what the application allows those tools to do. A text-only assistant has a different exposure profile from an agent that can read files, call APIs, or send messages. OWASP lists possible consequences including disclosure of sensitive information, altered outputs, unauthorized function use, command execution in connected systems, and manipulated decisions.

Can prompt injection steal data?
It can contribute to data exposure, but an injected instruction does not automatically grant access to information the system cannot reach. Risk rises when sensitive context is available to the model or its tools and application controls permit the resulting disclosure or action. A malicious instruction in a webpage is therefore a trust-boundary problem, not merely a suspicious phrase to search for.
Attacks can be direct, indirect, multimodal, or obfuscated. A list of warning words or a text filter may catch some cases, but cannot reliably identify every harmful instruction. Design the system so a missed detection has limited authority and limited impact.

How do I protect my data from prompt injection?
1. Minimize the data and access in the model’s reach
Provide only the information needed for the current task. Scope retrieval, database queries, and API credentials to the authenticated user and operation; prefer read-only access when it is sufficient, and separate resources by trust level. OWASP recommends minimum necessary privileges and per-tool permission scoping. If an injection succeeds, least privilege limits what it can reach.

Use application-held credentials and have code enforce permissions. Treat a model-generated tool call as a request for the application to evaluate, not as authorization. Before executing it, check the authenticated user’s rights, the task context, and an allowlist of permitted functions and parameter values. Do not let model output alone authorize a sensitive operation.

3. Treat external content as untrusted data
Webpages, retrieved documents, emails, API responses, and user-provided files should be analyzed as content, not allowed to change application policy. Keep them structurally separate from trusted instructions and clearly label them as untrusted in the model context. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet puts it plainly: “Treat all external data as untrusted (user messages, retrieved documents, API responses, emails).” Labels and delimiters can help establish the boundary, but are not security barriers by themselves.
4. Validate outputs and gate sensitive actions
Validate expected output formats and tool arguments deterministically before use. For high-impact operations—such as sending a message, deleting data, making a purchase, or changing permissions—require independent approval or another explicit application-level check. Screen outputs for sensitive information where appropriate. A refusal in the final response does not prove that the system did not already call a tool.

5. Use detection as a supporting layer
Input, output, or action screening can flag some suspicious behavior. A guardrail model can also be attacked, and adding checks brings latency, cost, and operational work. Use detectors alongside access controls, separated data boundaries, and approval gates; do not rely on a detector to contain an action after the fact.

- Seed a harmless marker. Put a unique dummy secret in the test context where the system might encounter it. Do not use real credentials or personal data.
- Place an adversarial instruction in the target channel. For example, include test text in a mock webpage or document that asks the model to reveal the marker or use a tool outside the task’s scope.
- Run the workflow with sandboxed tools. Use instrumented destinations and safe substitutes so attempted calls or state changes can be observed without sending real messages, deleting real files, or modifying live accounts.
- Check outcomes separately. Record whether the marker appeared in output, whether an unauthorized tool call was attempted or executed, whether state changed, and whether data reached an external destination.
- Repeat across relevant channels and review failures. A few hand-picked cases are a smoke test, not evidence that the system is secure. OWASP explicitly describes its examples as illustrative rather than representative of real traffic or attacks.
Testing should also verify that a blocked action is blocked by application permissions, not just by the model choosing to refuse. Keep tests in a safe environment and continue observing tool calls, denials, and sensitive-output controls as the application and its integrations change.
Which defenses should I prioritize?
Prioritize controls that constrain authority even if an instruction is followed: narrow data access, code-enforced authorization, and approval for high-impact operations. Then add trust-boundary labeling, deterministic validation, and screening as complementary layers. The sources do not establish a universal head-to-head winner or comparative success rate for these approaches, so choose based on the channel and impact your application needs to control.
OWASP also describes CaMeL as an architectural direction: a privileged planner that does not inspect risky documents, a quarantined parser without tool access, and a custom interpreter that tracks data capabilities. OWASP characterizes this approach as early-stage and says further work is needed before wide adoption; it is not a plug-and-play guarantee.

Neither a system prompt, special delimiters, sanitization, nor a guardrail alone should be treated as complete protection. OWASP says fool-proof prevention is unclear, and NIST notes that proposed defenses do not provide full immunity. The defensible goal is to reduce risk and contain impact through layered controls—not to promise that prompt injection can never succeed.
