Both the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro with M4 support Stage Manager windows on an external display in iPadOS 26. Connect a compatible screen, turn on Stage Manager under Settings > Multitasking & Gestures, then open or move apps to the display you want to use. The maximum resolution depends on the display and connection: Apple lists USB-C displays up to 6K and support for Thunderbolt displays.

Before you connect: check the iPad and display

Apple lists both iPad Pro M4 sizes—the 11-inch and 13-inch—as supporting Stage Manager and moving apps and windows to an external display in iPadOS 26. Check which input your screen accepts: USB-C, Thunderbolt, or HDMI. The port determines whether you can connect directly or need an adapter.

For high-resolution USB-C displays, use a cable that supports high-bandwidth connections; USB-C cables do not all offer the same capabilities. Apple’s current connection guidance says iPad Pro M4 supports USB-C displays up to 6K and Thunderbolt displays. The actual result depends on the display and the full connection path. Apple’s USB-C connection guide describes supported connections and HDMI output.

Connect the external display

USB-C or Thunderbolt display

Connect the iPad to the display with a compatible USB-C cable. For a high-resolution screen, choose a cable specified for high-bandwidth connections. If you are connecting through a dock, check that the dock and its cables support the display’s resolution and refresh rate, and that they meet any Thunderbolt requirement.

HDMI display

Connect a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter to the iPad, then connect the adapter to the display with an HDMI cable. Apple says an HDMI 2.0 adapter can output up to 4K at 60 Hz from iPad Pro; the adapter and display must support the intended mode. With Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, the Home Screen and apps display at 1080p/60 Hz. Video can switch to up to 4K/60 Hz when Match Content is enabled.

For a TV, projector, or other screen with a different input, use a compatible adapter and cable for that port. If charging while connected matters, check whether the adapter or dock provides power delivery. The right accessory depends on the display’s inputs and the resolution, refresh rate, charging, and Thunderbolt needs of your setup.

Arrange windows and create a group

Stage Manager lets you resize and overlap windows and keep related apps together in a workspace. When it is on, the apps you are working in move to the front and other open apps appear in a recent-apps list along the left side of the screen, as described in Apple’s iPad User Guide.

If the display does not show a picture

  • Check that the cable and adapter match the ports on both the iPad and display, and that they support the display mode you are trying to use.
  • Set the monitor, TV, or projector to the input used by the iPad.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the iPad. If the display still does not turn on, power-cycle the display and reconnect it, as Apple recommends in its guide to connecting iPad to a display with a cable.

What to expect from the external screen

A connected display may mirror the iPad, show an app-specific second-screen view, or provide an extended workspace, depending on the app and setup. With Stage Manager, the M4 iPad Pro models support moving app windows between the iPad and external display. For HDMI, Apple notes that its USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter can carry Dolby Digital Plus audio but not Dolby Atmos.
