Flow profiling controls how quickly water moves through an espresso puck; pressure then changes in response to the puck’s resistance. It can give curious baristas another way to shape and understand a shot, but it is not a guaranteed flavor upgrade and is not required for making good espresso.
What flow profiling means
As water passes through a coffee puck, the puck resists that flow. Its resistance can change during extraction. In flow profiling, the machine targets a chosen flow rate and adjusts pressure to try to maintain it. In pressure profiling, the machine targets pressure and the resulting flow changes with the puck’s resistance. Decent Espresso explains the distinction in its pressure-versus-flow profiling overview.

A machine can display both pressure and flow while controlling only one of them. Seeing a flow number on a screen is therefore not proof that the machine actively controls flow. Control behavior and feedback depend on the machine’s design.
What flow profiling can—and cannot—do
Changing the flow target gives the barista another variable to adjust and a way to observe how the puck responds. Decent says its flow-controlled approach can reduce pressure when flow rises, which may help limit a developing channel. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of a possible mitigation, not proof that flow control prevents channeling or reliably improves flavor.

Flow, pressure, grind, temperature and puck preparation interact. A profile cannot compensate automatically for inconsistent distribution or an unsuitable grind, and the sources do not establish one universally best flow curve. Decent’s comparison says flow profiling by itself does not guarantee a better shot and does not outperform pressure profiling for a skilled barista with a properly prepared puck. This is a vendor-authored assessment, not a published independent blind-tasting result.
Flow profiling versus pressure profiling
| Approach | What the machine targets | What responds to puck resistance |
|---|---|---|
| Flow profiling | Flow rate | Pressure |
| Pressure profiling | Pressure | Flow rate |
Decent also describes adaptive profiles as a hybrid: the target flow varies while a pressure ceiling is maintained. That is one manufacturer’s implementation, not a feature that should be assumed of every machine marketed as having flow control.

What the machine’s readings tell you
The DE1 is one documented example of a machine with programmable profiles and visual records of pressure and flow during a shot. Decent says its DE1 plots puck pressure and liquid flow; its flow estimate combines machine geometry with a physical model because an internal meter is unreliable at slow flow rates. The documentation was updated on July 15, 2026. These details illustrate why a displayed measurement, a modeled estimate and closed-loop flow control are not interchangeable capabilities.

When assessing a machine, check what it actually controls, whether it records both variables, and how it derives those readings. Do not assume another machine has the DE1’s sensors, estimation method, feedback behavior or profile editor.

What the preinfusion research establishes
A Decent-hosted summary of Stéphane Ribes’s May 2019 research and presentation describes preinfusion tests on a DE1PRO v1.1 using a 20 g dose in an 18 g basket. The setup tested flow rates from 0.5 to 8.0 mL/s and reported that rapid preinfusion and a pressure rise affected puck compression and flow resistance.
The page explicitly combines observations with hypotheses. It also notes that dose, puck preparation and headspace were not analyzed. These results describe that particular setup; they do not establish a consumer-facing performance guarantee or a generally optimal preinfusion rate.

When flow profiling is worth using
It is most likely to appeal to someone who enjoys testing recipes, wants to examine pressure and flow as a shot develops, and has equipment that can control or meaningfully track those variables. It can provide another lens for thinking about puck behavior, but it adds equipment and learning considerations.

Questions to ask before choosing a machine
- Control: Does the machine target flow, pressure, or an adaptive combination?
- Feedback: Does it show or record both variables, and are the readings measured or estimated?
- Repeatability: Can you prepare the puck consistently enough for profile changes to be meaningful?
- Workflow: Do you want to adjust and interpret curves, or would a simpler routine suit you better?
- Evidence: Is a claimed benefit a manufacturer’s explanation, a setup-specific observation, or independent comparative sensory evidence?
