Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Buffering and blurry streaming can come from a weak or unstable connection, Wi-Fi interference, a problem with one app or device, or—in the case of an external player—a display connection that cannot support the chosen format. Start by checking which devices and services are affected, then work through the free fixes before considering equipment or internet-plan changes.
First, find out where the problem occurs
Notice whether the trouble follows one movie, one streaming app, one playback device, or several services and devices. The pattern helps narrow the possibilities, but does not by itself prove the cause.

- One title: Try another title in the same service.
- One app: Try a different streaming service on the same device.
- One device: Try the same service on another device connected to the same network.
- Several devices or services: Focus first on the shared internet connection and home network.
Netflix lists a weak or unstable internet connection and a device that needs an update among possible reasons a show or movie loads slowly or buffers. Its Help Center also notes that congestion anywhere between the service and your screen can affect video quality. Netflix’s troubleshooting guidance and explanation of streaming quality describe these factors.

Run the streaming service’s connection check, if it offers one, or use a speed test on the device that is buffering. A test is a clue, not a complete diagnosis: performance can vary over time, and a result from a phone may not reflect the connection reaching a TV in another room.

Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least the following speeds for its stated resolutions. These are Netflix recommendations, not guarantees or universal requirements for every service or household.
| Netflix resolution | Netflix stable-connection recommendation |
|---|---|
| HD (720p) | At least 3 Mbps |
| Full HD (1080p) | At least 5 Mbps |
| UHD (4K) | At least 15 Mbps |
See Netflix’s resolution guidance for its recommendations. If the connection on the playback device is below the target or fluctuates, choose a lower video quality temporarily when the app provides that control. Netflix notes this may help when an internet provider limits speed; it will reduce picture detail, but can make playback more reliable.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Restart the app and playback device
- Close the streaming app and open it again. If it remains unresponsive, restart the TV, streaming box, computer, or other playback device.
- Check for available app and system updates, then install them using the device’s normal update settings. Netflix includes restarting the device and updating Android OS among its troubleshooting steps.
- Test playback again with the same title, then compare another title or service if the problem continues.
For app-specific instructions, use the streaming service or device maker’s support. Netflix’s help steps and Prime Video’s playback guidance both include device or connection troubleshooting.
Restart the modem and router
If more than one app or device is having trouble, restart the network equipment. For a TV troubleshooting flow, Netflix advises unplugging the modem and router, waiting 30 seconds, reconnecting them, waiting one minute, and then turning the playback device back on. Some equipment takes longer to reconnect, and manufacturers may specify different restart steps.

- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait 30 seconds, then reconnect them.
- Wait for the internet connection to return; Netflix’s cited sequence allows one minute, though some equipment needs longer.
- Turn the playback device back on and test streaming.
Follow your equipment maker’s instructions if they differ. The sequence above comes from Netflix Help Center.
Improve Wi-Fi before buying anything
If the affected device uses Wi-Fi, try moving it closer to the router or moving the router to a more open, central position. Keep the devices within range, and where practical, reduce obstruction and interference from nearby wireless devices or appliances. YouTube specifically advises keeping a TV or other playback device within router range and avoiding obstacles such as a recessed wall or metal blockage; see YouTube’s connection troubleshooting guidance.

If the playback device and router both support wired networking, a temporary Ethernet connection can help you compare wired playback with Wi-Fi. A better result over Ethernet points toward Wi-Fi coverage or interference as a possibility, but does not identify a particular router fault. Repositioning existing equipment is the free first step; consider new networking equipment only if testing shows a persistent coverage problem.

Check HDMI and HDCP for an external player
If a streaming box, game console, or other external player connects to the TV, the HDMI display path can limit the resolution or HDR format the service will play. Prime Video says HD playback requires HDMI compatibility with HDCP 1.4, while UHD/HDR requires HDCP 2.2. This is a compatibility check for picture format, not a fix for Wi-Fi buffering.
Best Value

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,250 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 80 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
- Check that the HDMI port and cable are compatible with the format you want to watch.
- If practical, try another HDMI port or cable that meets the required HDCP level.
- Consult Prime Video Help for its external-device requirements.
Know when to contact the provider
If several devices and streaming services still buffer after restarting the network and improving Wi-Fi placement, contact your internet provider and describe the devices, services, and times affected. A problem limited to one app or device is better directed to that streaming service or device maker. On a public or managed network, video services may be blocked by the network operator, so changing home Wi-Fi settings will not resolve that restriction.
