FLAC means Free Lossless Audio Codec. It compresses digital audio without losing information, so decoding it can recover the original encoded PCM samples. FLAC is a codec and audio format—not a streaming service, a guarantee of audible improvement, or a device you need to buy.
What FLAC means—and what “lossless” guarantees
FLAC is designed for PCM audio, the kind of digital audio represented by samples. It reduces the space needed to store or transmit that audio while preserving the encoded sample values. It is compressed audio, not uncompressed PCM.

“Lossless” describes whether the data can be recovered: a FLAC decoder can reproduce the original encoded PCM samples. That technical property does not establish that every listener will hear a difference between FLAC and another source, or that two files contain the same recording or mastering.
FLAC is not itself a music service or a sound-quality tier. Whether you can play a particular file or receive FLAC from a streaming service depends on the software, device, service, and delivery path.

How FLAC works
Audio samples close together in time often have predictable relationships. FLAC uses this short-term correlation to represent the signal more compactly; unlike a lossy codec, it does not discard audio information to make the file smaller.
A FLAC file or stream starts with the fLaC marker and a required STREAMINFO metadata block, followed by optional metadata and audio frames. STREAMINFO records details such as sample rate and channel count, and includes an MD5 signature of the unencoded audio samples that can help check transmission integrity. The format also defines metadata for comments, seeking, cuesheets, and pictures.
Format limits are not player guarantees
The format specification permits 1–8 channels, sample rates from 1 to 1,048,575 Hz, and sample depths from 4 to 32 bits. Those are capabilities of the format, not a promise that a particular app or device supports every combination. The specification notes that most FLAC tools have been optimized for CD audio: stereo, 44.1 kHz, 16-bit PCM.

The IETF published the current formal specification as RFC 9639 in December 2024. Its abstract describes FLAC as reducing storage space “without losing information.” Read RFC 9639.
Can you stream FLAC?
Yes. FLAC is not limited to downloads: RFC 9639 defines a streamable subset. Its constraints allow a decoder without seeking to join in the middle of a stream, while keeping decoder resource requirements more predictable.
Support still depends on the service and delivery implementation. Amazon Music’s developer documentation lists FLAC for HD and UHD delivery using MPEG-DASH in ISO BMFF/MP4. In that documented integration, HD is 16-bit and UHD is 24-bit, with different sampling-rate options; those details apply to Amazon’s implementation and should not be generalized to every service or catalog item. See Amazon Music’s developer documentation.

Apple’s HLS authoring specification also includes FLAC among supported stereo and multichannel codecs, with fMP4 required as the container for FLAC audio in that delivery system. This is support in the HLS specification, not evidence that every Apple device or consumer service accepts every FLAC file. See Apple’s HLS authoring specification.

FLAC versus MP3: different trade-offs
| Question | FLAC | MP3 |
|---|---|---|
| Does decoding preserve the encoded PCM samples? | Yes. FLAC is lossless. | No. MP3 is lossy. |
| Does the format discard audio information to compress? | No. | Yes. |
| Does the format alone prove a listener will hear a difference? | No. | No. |
| What should you check before choosing? | Available storage or bandwidth, and support in the service and playback chain. | Available storage or bandwidth, and support in the service and playback chain. |
The choice is about data preservation and practical trade-offs, not a universal promise about perception. A FLAC file’s larger sample-rate or bit-depth number—or a “high-resolution” label—does not by itself prove an audible improvement. The source recording and the full playback chain matter too.
How to check whether your setup supports FLAC
- For a local file: check the supported-format list in your player app’s settings or device manual. Xiph notes that FLAC is supported by many programs; support for a particular device or file combination should be verified with its documentation. See Xiph’s FLAC information.
- For streamed music: check the service’s current format or quality documentation and the quality setting available in your account. A service’s FLAC option does not establish that every device in your setup receives FLAC.
- Check the whole output path: confirm how the app and device decode and output audio, and whether any later component changes the format. The codec used at one point does not guarantee that every link preserves the same stream format.
- Try your existing equipment first: if your current phone, computer, media player, or receiver decodes the file, a new player or DAC is not automatically necessary. The cited format documentation does not establish a requirement to buy a separate DAC.
If you want to carry a local library offline, a portable digital audio player with explicit FLAC support is one optional route. Compare its supported formats and sample rates, storage expansion, battery life, interface, and output connections against your needs; hardware capable of decoding FLAC is practical, but no particular player model is required or endorsed here.

Common questions
Does FLAC sound better?
Lossless means the encoded PCM data is recoverable; it does not prove that every listener will hear a difference. The format specification establishes a data property, not a universal listening result.
Do I need a DAC to listen to FLAC?
Not automatically. First check whether your existing device or app decodes FLAC and how it outputs audio. FLAC support alone does not establish a need for a new DAC.
Does FLAC support high-resolution audio?
The format permits sample rates up to 1,048,575 Hz and sample depths up to 32 bits, but those limits do not mean your player supports every combination or that higher numbers will be audible as an improvement.
