What’s actually slowing this PC down?

YouTube does not publish a universal minimum CPU, GPU, or RAM specification for livestreaming. The PC you need depends on what you are streaming and which encoder workload it must handle. For a practical starting point, choose your source and output quality, configure a supported encoder, confirm your upload capacity has enough headroom, and test a representative stream before going live.
What a PC needs to stream on YouTube Live
Separate the job into two parts: your computer must capture and encode the content, while YouTube receives the resulting stream at a supported bitrate and format. YouTube’s published ingest settings describe what to send; they are not CPU or GPU requirements, and they do not establish a minimum RAM or storage configuration. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Choose equipment for your actual source and target. A PC streaming its own gameplay has to run the game and capture/encode it. A webcam stream has a simpler source workflow. An encoder setup using a console, camera, or other external video and audio may need additional hardware, such as a capture card. A capture card is not a universal requirement for YouTube Live or direct PC gameplay.

Match the workflow to the source
- Direct PC gameplay: The computer runs the game and the streaming software. The workload depends on the game, output resolution and frame rate, and whether encoding uses the CPU or a supported hardware encoder.
- Webcam or simple computer stream: You can use YouTube’s webcam workflow or encoder software, depending on the production you need. A webcam and microphone are source equipment, not platform-mandated PC specifications.
- Console or external video source: An encoder workflow can bring the source into the stream; a compatible capture card may be useful when the source needs to enter the PC.
YouTube distinguishes mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows and notes that expensive equipment is not required to start. Its live streaming tips describe these options.

How much upload speed you need
The relevant connection measure is available upload capacity, not download speed. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate and testing outbound bandwidth; download can be faster than upload. Include a backup stream’s bitrate in your calculation if you use backup ingestion. These are YouTube Help recommendations, not an internet-plan guarantee. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Use this planning calculation: minimum tested upload capacity = total stream bitrate ÷ 0.8. For example, a 17 Mbps video stream alone implies at least 21.25 Mbps of tested upload capacity to preserve 20% headroom. Audio and any backup stream also consume bandwidth, so include them in the total rather than treating the video figure as the whole stream.

Connection stability matters as well as a speed-test result. Use a reliable connection and test the actual encoder path at the time and location you plan to stream. A nominal internet-plan speed does not show that the same upload capacity will be consistently available to your stream.

For instance, YouTube lists 17 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p60, and 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at the same output. The difference is why bitrate advice must name the codec. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings page when choosing your setup.
Encoder settings that matter
For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

- Memory and Storage: 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM paired with 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD for fast multitasking and quick data access
- Power Supply: 550W 80PLUS Bronze certified power supply ensures stable and energy-efficient operation
- Codec: Select a codec supported by YouTube and available in your encoder. Software version and hardware encoder support affect which choices appear.
- Bitrate mode: Use CBR, as YouTube recommends, and choose the bitrate for your codec, resolution, and frame rate from the table.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 are listed for RTMP/RTMPS. AAC is required for 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS.
- Color: YouTube’s SDR guidance specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit video. Its HDR guidance specifies 10-bit and HEVC; AV1 is not supported for HDR on the cited live encoder settings page.
These are ingest specifications, not a promise that every encoder or PC offers every combination. YouTube’s guidance does not benchmark particular CPUs, GPUs, or hardware encoders.
How to choose a PC without inventing a minimum spec
- Identify the source workload. Decide whether you will capture gameplay on the same PC, use a webcam, or bring in external video and audio.
- Set an output target. Choose resolution and frame rate based on what you can produce and upload reliably, then use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for the selected codec.
- Check encoder support. Confirm your streaming software and hardware actually offer the codec and output settings you intend to use. YouTube’s ingest list alone does not establish encoder performance.
- Measure upload capacity. Test outbound bandwidth and ensure the total stream bitrate leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Test the complete setup. Stream representative motion and audio, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health before relying on the configuration.
This approach is more useful than buying to an unsupported “minimum PC” number: the necessary computer changes with the source, game or production, chosen encoder, and output target.

Test before the event and check channel eligibility
Test with motion and audio resembling the real broadcast, check the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health. YouTube’s tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event, leaving time to catch configuration or connection problems.
Live access is separate from PC capability. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days; first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live streaming requirements before scheduling a first broadcast.
Troubleshooting a weak or unstable stream
- Stream health shows connection trouble: Check available upload capacity rather than download speed, test outbound bandwidth, and reduce the encoder bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it with headroom.
- Video quality is poor despite a fast connection: Confirm the encoder’s selected codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate match the settings you planned. A speed test does not correct an unsuitable encoder configuration.
- Frames or motion look wrong: Recheck the output frame rate and test with motion similar to the intended content. Review the preview and stream health before the event.
- Audio is missing or incompatible: Check the encoder’s audio codec and routing; for 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube requires AAC.
- The intended codec is unavailable: Check encoder software version and whether the computer’s software or hardware supports that option; YouTube’s accepted formats do not guarantee it is available on a particular machine.
- First stream cannot be enabled: Verify channel eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-stream enablement.
