Best Video Codec for Live Streaming: H.264 vs. HEVC vs. AV1

H.264 is the safest compatibility-first live-streaming codec, but the right choice depends on your platform, bitrate, encoder, packaging path, and HDR needs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most live streams, H.264/AVC is the safest default when compatibility matters. There is no universally best codec: first check what your streaming platform accepts, then weigh available upload bandwidth, encoder performance, playback support, packaging requirements, and whether you need HDR. Choose HEVC/H.265 or AV1 when the whole delivery chain supports it and its advantages fit your stream.

What to consider before choosing a codec

A codec compresses video for transmission and playback, but choosing one is not just a question of compression efficiency. The ingest service must accept it; the encoder must produce it reliably in real time; and the platform, packager, and playback path must handle the resulting stream. A platform accepting a codec for ingest does not mean every device decodes it directly: some services transcode incoming streams for viewers.

  • Destination support: Confirm the platform’s current codec, protocol, resolution, and frame-rate requirements.
  • Upload capacity: Match the platform’s recommended bitrate without saturating your upstream connection. Leave headroom for network variation.
  • Encoder capability: Test whether your hardware or software encoder can sustain the selected codec and settings without dropped frames.
  • Playback and packaging: Check the entire workflow, including any packager and intended viewer devices.
  • Image requirements: Consider motion and visual complexity, latency, and HDR or bit depth where relevant.

Codec labels alone do not predict the result. Encoder implementation, settings, and content complexity affect quality, and higher-motion or visually complex scenes generally need more bitrate to maintain quality. The platform recommendations below are not a controlled, same-content benchmark proving that one codec always looks better.

H.264, HEVC, or AV1: which should you use?

Codec Good fit What to check
H.264 / AVC Compatibility-first streaming, or a destination that requires or documents H.264. At the listed YouTube resolutions and frame rates below, its recommended bitrate is higher than YouTube’s HEVC/AV1 figure. Actual quality still depends on the encoder, settings, and scene.
H.265 / HEVC A workflow whose destination documents support, particularly when HDR is needed or bitrate efficiency is important. Verify the ingest protocol, container, packaging, and playback path. YouTube’s live HDR guidance recommends HEVC.
AV1 A destination and downstream workflow that explicitly document support, especially when bandwidth efficiency matters. Support is not universal across ingest and packaging paths. YouTube’s cited live guidance does not support AV1 for HDR; AWS MediaPackage v2 supports AV1 output only on CMAF endpoints, not TS endpoints.

Do not infer support on one service, protocol, container, or device from support on another. If your destination is not covered here, consult its current official encoder guidance before selecting a codec.

YouTube Live codec and bitrate settings

YouTube Help’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps. Its figures are recommended ingestion bitrates for the specified modes, not universal minimums or guarantees of quality.

YouTube Live mode AV1 or HEVC recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
4K/2160p at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps

Rate control, keyframes, and protocol

  • YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for its listed RTMP/RTMPS settings.
  • Use a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • YouTube recommends RTMPS. Set the protocol and ingest details to match your encoder and stream setup.
  • Test with representative audio and movement before going live. A static scene does not reveal how a high-motion stream will perform.
  • YouTube automatically transcodes incoming live video into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not remove the need to send a stable, supported ingest stream.

HDR on YouTube Live

YouTube’s cited live guidance recommends 10-bit HDR and HEVC over RTMP(S); it suggests HLS if the encoder cannot provide the needed RTMP capabilities. The guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Check the current YouTube requirements and your encoder’s supported HDR workflow before configuring an HDR stream.

Other platform and delivery constraints

Amazon IVS

Amazon IVS documents H.264 video and AAC-LC audio, with RTMPS, RTMP, and SRT ingest. Its guidance recommends CBR rather than VBR, because bitrate spikes can cause dropped frames before ingest or buffering at the player. It generally recommends a two-second keyframe interval; one second may reduce startup time but can increase adaptive-bitrate resolution changes and buffering. IVS advises against intervals longer than five seconds. Consult the IVS guidance for the resolution and bitrate applicable to your channel type.

AWS Elemental encoding and packaging

AWS Elemental MediaLive documents AV1, H.264/AVC, and H.265/HEVC encoding, with rate-control choices that depend on the codec. Its documentation describes CBR as holding a specified rate, potentially trading quality as scene complexity changes, and QVBR as targeting quality subject to a maximum bitrate. These are managed-service options, not universal settings for every live stream.

AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2 documents AVC and HEVC across several workflows, and AV1 in CMAF input/output workflows. Its AV1 output is supported only for CMAF endpoint types; AV1 streams do not appear on TS endpoints. This is why encoder support alone is not enough to establish that a delivery path will work.

A practical setup and test sequence

  1. Open the destination’s current encoder documentation. Confirm accepted codec, ingest protocol, resolution, frame rate, bitrate range, keyframe interval, and any HDR requirements for the account and workflow you will use.
  2. Pick a supported codec. Choose H.264 when compatibility is the priority. Choose HEVC or AV1 only if the destination and each downstream component support the selected format.
  3. Set a realistic mode and bitrate. For YouTube, use its recommendation for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. Confirm your sustained upload capacity can carry the stream with headroom.
  4. Configure rate control and keyframes. For YouTube’s listed RTMP/RTMPS settings, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Follow the destination’s own guidance if you are streaming elsewhere.
  5. Run a representative test. Include the stream’s typical motion, scene changes, and audio. Watch the encoder for rendering or encoding overload and check the platform’s ingest health for dropped frames or instability.
  6. Verify the viewer path. Check playback on the devices and networks that matter to your audience, including any packaging or player path between ingest and playback.

Common problems and fixes

  • The platform rejects the stream: Confirm codec and protocol support for that destination, then check the selected resolution, frame rate, profile, and ingest configuration against its current documentation.
  • Dropped frames or unstable ingest: Check whether the encoder is overloaded or the upload connection is saturated. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a supported level, then test again with network headroom.
  • Quality falls during complex scenes: Motion and visual detail can require more bitrate. Check the platform recommendation for your mode, encoder settings, and available upload capacity; do not assume changing the codec alone fixes the constraint.
  • Slow startup or frequent player switching: Review the keyframe interval against the platform’s guidance. On IVS, a shorter interval can reduce startup time but may increase resolution switching and buffering.
  • AV1 fails downstream: Check every packaging endpoint, not just encoder output. For example, AWS MediaPackage v2 AV1 output requires a CMAF endpoint and will not appear on TS endpoints.
  • HDR does not work as expected: Verify the platform’s HDR codec, bit-depth, protocol, and encoder requirements. For YouTube’s cited guidance, use 10-bit HDR with HEVC; AV1 is not supported for HDR there.
