How to Combine Live Streaming and Video on Demand

Combine live and on-demand video by choosing the right experience first: temporary DVR, durable event replay, or a scheduled channel mixing VOD and live feeds.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To combine live streaming and video on demand, decide first whether viewers need a temporary catch-up window, a lasting replay, or a scheduled channel that mixes live feeds with on-demand videos. These are different workflows: retain live segments for DVR or clipping, copy selected replays into durable storage, or program catalogue items and live sources into a linear playout schedule.

Choose the viewing experience before choosing the technology

“Live plus on demand” can describe several products. The right architecture follows what viewers should be able to do, and how long the content must remain available.

Pattern What viewers get What the operator must do
Live event plus replay Watch the event live, then play a selected recording afterward. Retain the live media long enough to create a replay, then publish that replay as a durable VOD asset.
DVR or catch-up Join a live stream late, pause or seek within a time-shift window, subject to the service’s capabilities. Keep the live segments and DVR manifest available for the chosen retention window. Availability ends when that window expires.
Scheduled linear channel Tune in to a continuous or scheduled channel made from catalogue videos and live feeds. Build and operate a playout schedule that combines VOD items and live sources.

Google Cloud describes retained live segments and post-event VOD clips; its DVR sessions are governed by the live retention window. Brightcove describes a different pattern: scheduling catalogue items together with live feeds as a linear channel. Google Cloud’s live-to-VOD documentation and Brightcove’s Cloud Playout overview explain these respective workflows.

How to turn a live event into a durable replay

A replay is not automatically permanent just because the event was streamed. In Google’s documented Live Stream API workflow, the live channel retains segments; an operator creates a clip from past content, and the workflow copies the HLS manifest and associated segments to a chosen directory. That copy can outlast the live retention window. The documented clip feature supports HLS manifests only, and does not support clipping live content or scheduling clips for future creation.

  1. Before the event, choose the replay workflow. Confirm that the live service supports retaining the required media and that you have a destination for the finished asset.
  2. Set retention on the live channel. The segments must still exist when an operator is ready to create the clip. Google shows a 24-hour configuration example; it is an example, not a universal retention recommendation.
  3. Run the event and keep the stream’s media available. Leave enough time after the broadcast for review and clip creation, within the configured retention period.
  4. Create the clip from past content. In the documented Google workflow, the clip comprises the HLS manifest and its segments, copied to the selected directory.
  5. Publish the copied asset into the VOD experience. Add its title, description, captions and access settings, and test playback in the catalogue and on supported devices.

For an event where viewers need only a temporary time-shift, DVR may be sufficient. Google documents DVR sessions for past, current or future content, including viewers joining late and watching with a delay or skipping parts. The DVR manifest remains with the live segments and is removed when retention expires. A durable replay is different: it must be copied or otherwise archived outside that temporary window. See Google Cloud’s live-to-VOD and DVR guidance.

How to build a scheduled channel from VOD and live sources

For a channel people can tune into at a planned time—or continuously—use a playout schedule rather than treating every item as a standalone replay. Brightcove describes Cloud Playout as programming scheduled VOD catalogue items with live feeds and streaming them as a linear channel. Its examples include 24/7 linear channels, pop-up or virtual channels, and simulated live events. These are examples of a channel-programming model, not a requirement to use a particular vendor.

  1. Prepare the catalogue. Identify the VOD assets that can be scheduled and confirm their playback, caption and rights requirements.
  2. Identify live windows. Decide when live sources should take precedence, what happens before and after them, and what viewers see if a source is unavailable.
  3. Program the schedule. Sequence VOD items and live feeds to match the intended channel experience. Define time zones and how schedule changes are handled operationally.
  4. Test the channel end to end. Verify transitions, player compatibility, captions, access control, and failure handling before promoting the schedule.

Architecture: ingest, package, retain, store and deliver

A combined service usually has a live contribution path and an on-demand playback path. Some components can be shared, but live processing, retention and replay publishing still need to be designed. AWS describes packaged video as segments plus manifest files that set their order and timing. HLS, MPEG-DASH and CMAF are common formats in its documentation; shared formats do not guarantee that every codec, player, DRM scheme or device is compatible.

  1. Define the audience experience. Specify whether the product needs live plus replay, temporary DVR, a searchable VOD catalogue, a scheduled linear channel, or a combination.
  2. Choose an ingest path. Select an input protocol supported by the production source and receiving service. Google documents SRT and RTMP input for its Live Stream API; Cloudflare documents RTMPS or SRT live input. These are service-specific examples, not universal requirements. See Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview and Cloudflare Stream’s live documentation.
  3. Encode and package for playback. Confirm supported inputs, outputs, codecs, manifests and segment formats across the encoder, platform and target players. Google documents HLS and DASH output for its Live Stream API, with Cloud Storage as the output location and a possible Media CDN backend. AWS outlines common packaging and delivery patterns in its CloudFront video documentation.
  4. Set retention before going live. If the replay workflow relies on retained segments, configure retention before the event and make it long enough for review and clip creation. Then copy the replay to durable storage or the VOD catalogue. The retention duration depends on the workflow and operational needs; Google’s 24-hour sample is not a general recommendation.
  5. Choose storage and delivery. A common VOD pattern stores packaged assets on an origin or object store and serves them through a CDN. AWS describes VOD storage on a server or S3 with CloudFront delivery, and live delivery through MediaStore or MediaPackage origins with CloudFront. Whether to use a managed platform or combine separate cloud components depends on control needs, scale, existing infrastructure, geography and cost.
  6. Integrate playback and operations. Test the actual app and device matrix, captions, access control, publishing metadata and failure handling. Cloudflare documents playback through its player or any HLS/DASH-compatible player. Google documents CEA-608/708 caption passthrough and encryption options for its API. These capabilities are service-specific; verify them against the configuration you plan to deploy.

Playback, captions, access and bandwidth

Confirm compatibility across the whole playback path

A format name alone does not prove that an asset will play everywhere. Check the source codec, packaged format, player, device, captions and any protection scheme together. AWS’s documentation describes HLS, MPEG-DASH and CMAF as common packaging formats, but compatibility still depends on the actual app and device matrix.

Configure browser access and DRM deliberately

For browser playback, Microsoft’s Azure Front Door guidance calls for correct CORS headers on manifest and segment requests. It discusses combinations of PlayReady, Widevine and FairPlay for commercial deployments depending on device support. That guidance is an implementation consideration, not proof that Azure Front Door itself provides every DRM service. DRM license requests also need different routing and caching treatment from media segments. See Microsoft Learn’s video streaming guidance.

Plan bandwidth using representative footage

Resolution is not the only factor in delivery demand. Cloudflare notes that adaptive-bitrate bandwidth estimates can vary with visual complexity: a slide presentation may require less bandwidth than fast-motion sports at the same resolution. Use representative material when estimating encoding and delivery needs. Cloudflare Stream’s live documentation discusses its input and playback workflow.

Rights and monetization need separate decisions

Before retaining, replaying, repackaging or monetizing a live event, confirm that the operator has the necessary rights for each use. Commercial content may also require access controls or DRM. Dynamic ad insertion is possible for both live and VOD, but it does not happen automatically when the two experiences are combined. Google Cloud documents Video Stitcher workflows for inserting ads dynamically into VOD and live sessions using HLS/DASH-compatible formats; rights, ad decisioning, measurement and playback integration remain design tasks. See Google Cloud’s VOD use case.

Compare platforms and designs on the right criteria

There is no universal best architecture: a single-event replay has different operational needs from a continuously programmed channel. Compare options against the actual use case rather than assuming that a high-scale design or feature list applies to every audience.

  • Viewer experience: temporary time-shift, durable replay, searchable catalogue or scheduled linear channel.
  • Retention: how long live segments persist and whether replays are copied into durable storage.
  • Input and output support: contribution protocols, codecs, HLS/DASH or other playback formats, captions and target devices.
  • Operations: a managed platform versus separately composed encoding, packaging, storage and CDN services; include failover and support needs.
  • Delivery requirements: audience geography, concurrency, resilience and latency targets.
  • Rights and access: permission to retain, replay, repackage and monetize, plus any required access controls or DRM.
  • Total cost: include encoding, retained storage, packaging, CDN egress, platform fees and support at expected usage. The provider documentation cited here does not establish comparable current prices.
