Mozilla says the refreshed design began rolling out to Firefox on desktop and mobile on September 29, 2026. The announcement is about Mozilla Firefox; it does not establish that independent Firefox-based browsers will receive the redesign.
What is Firefox Nova?
Mozilla describes Nova as a renewal of Firefox’s existing interface rather than a replacement for the browser. In its Firefox design announcement, Mozilla wrote: “The name fits: A nova can look like a new star, yet it comes from existing matter — a renewal, not a replacement.” The product remains Firefox; Nova is the project name for the redesign.

Mozilla’s September 29, 2026 update says rollout to people using Firefox on desktop and mobile began that day. That is a rollout start date, not a claim that every user or device received the update immediately.
What changes does Nova bring to Firefox?
Mozilla presents the redesign as a more cohesive, cleaner, warmer, faster, and more adaptable Firefox. The announced areas of work span navigation, Settings, privacy controls, and access to different tab layouts.
#1 Best Overall
- Firefox is designed to protect and respect your private information. Mozilla was voted the Most Trusted Internet Company for Privacy.
- How you use the Web is unique. Firefox lets you change it to match. Remove what you don't use, keep what you do and put it just about anywhere you want.
- Firefox was named the "speed king" in independent benchmark and performance tests against other browsers. Save time and do just about anything quicker than before.
- Navigation: Mozilla describes simpler navigation.
- Settings and privacy: The redesigned Settings experience includes controls to turn off AI features and adjust Enhanced Tracking Protection.
- Tab and page layouts: Mozilla has highlighted easier access to tab groups, vertical tabs, and split view.
- Compact Mode: Mozilla listed its return as an area of work during development.
These descriptions do not independently verify the final release status of every feature. Mozilla’s May 21, 2026 employee post discussed the work in development, while its later announcement describes the redesign and rollout. Check Firefox’s current Settings and release information for the availability of a specific control or layout.
Will Nova affect other Firefox-based browsers?
Mozilla’s announcement covers Mozilla Firefox. It does not say that independent browsers built on Firefox technology—often called forks—automatically adopt Nova, nor does it establish that they will share Firefox’s interface or feature set.

- ✓ Disabled Javascript Mode
For a particular fork, consult that browser’s own release notes or documentation. To assess whether it has adopted comparable changes, check the interface it ships, which features are included, when its update is available, and whether its themes or custom styling still work. Mozilla’s announcement does not provide a compatibility list for other browsers.
Will existing Firefox themes still work?
The Mozilla Add-ons Community Blog says themes continue to load and that most theme color and image properties still work, although their placement and appearance may change. Themes that rely on a background image are especially worth checking.

- For Firefox users: After updating, inspect your installed theme across the refreshed browser frame and change it if colors or images no longer look as intended.
- For theme authors: Review how background images and colors appear in the redesigned interface.
