To set up a Google Pixel, charge your new and old phones, connect to Wi-Fi, keep the old phone’s screen-lock PIN handy, and have a USB-C cable available if you want a wired transfer. Turn on the Pixel and follow its prompts for SIM or eSIM, Google Account sign-in, and copying or restoring data. After setup, use the Home screen and Settings to adjust wallpaper, apps, display, accessibility, and Quick Settings. Exact options depend on the Pixel model, Android version, and location.
Before you turn on the Pixel
Gather the items you may need so you can finish setup without losing access to the old phone:

- Charge both phones and connect the Pixel to a strong Wi-Fi network.
- Keep the previous phone nearby and know its screen-lock PIN.
- Have a USB-C cable for data transfer if you prefer a wired connection or Wi-Fi is weak. A cable is optional; check both phones’ connectors before using or buying one.
- Have a SIM tool only if you need to move a physical SIM. Pixel 10 and later phones sold in the US do not have a physical SIM slot, so follow the on-screen eSIM instructions instead.
Back up the old phone first. To review what its device backup includes, open Settings > Google services > Backup > Backup details. Device backup is distinct from photos, videos, and contacts synced through their own services. Third-party app data, such as WhatsApp chat history, may require a backup within that app. See Google’s Pixel backup and restore guidance and setup preparation checklist.
Set up the Pixel and choose how to bring over data
Turn on the Pixel and follow the setup wizard. It will guide you through SIM or eSIM, Wi-Fi, Google Account sign-in, and transfer or restore choices. A Google Account is needed to download apps, use some features, or transfer data later, even if you skip copying during initial setup.

Transfer directly from an Android phone
On Pixel 8 and later, Google supports pairing with a previous Android or Pixel phone using a QR code and transferring over Wi-Fi, by cable, or with both. Choose the data categories shown on screen rather than assuming the new phone will be an exact copy. Google says most data types transfer, but data in apps specific to another manufacturer may not. Some categories also differ between Pixel-to-Pixel and other-Android transfers; for example, recordings and Home screen layout are not identified as transferring from another Android phone in the same way as from another Pixel.
Keep both phones available and follow the Pixel’s prompts to connect them, then review the category list before starting. Google’s device-transfer guide covers supported routes and differences. If offered a cable connection, use a compatible cable; wireless transfer is also supported.

Transfer from an iPhone
Use Google’s previous-device transfer instructions and select the iPhone path shown for your Pixel. The process and transferred data can vary by device, so do not rely on the Android-to-Android category list for an iPhone transfer. Google’s setup preparation page describes automatic transfer baselines of Android 5.0 or later and iOS 8.0 or later, while noting that the process varies.

If the old phone is unavailable, or you would rather not connect it, select the cloud-backup restore option during initial setup if a suitable backup exists. Review the categories offered before restoring: a cloud restore is not the same as transferring directly from a phone, and separately synced or app-specific data may be handled elsewhere.

Google documents post-setup transfer through Android Switch for Pixel 9 and later. Its cloud-restore instructions say only one previous device can be restored; changing the source device requires resetting the Pixel, which erases its data. Do not reset casually—check the current on-device prompts and make sure anything already on the Pixel is safe first. Details are in Google’s cloud-backup transfer instructions.
If you skipped transfer and have an older Pixel
For devices earlier than Pixel 9, Google describes a Finish setting up notification or Settings prompt soon after initial setup. After a longer delay, completing transfer may require a factory reset, which erases the phone. Check the Pixel’s current prompts before deciding whether to reset; the post-setup Android Switch route is documented for Pixel 9 and later.

Adjust display and accessibility settings
Open Settings > Display & touch to find controls such as brightness, text and display size, screen rotation, screen timeout, and color or theme options. The available choices vary by model and software version. Google documents Adaptive brightness as on by default in its cited help material; smooth display can use more battery and may be disabled while Battery Saver is active.
If you want a simplified interface, Google presents Simple View as an accessibility option available during setup or later in Accessibility settings. Check your device’s current menus: display features and labels are not identical across Pixel generations. See Google’s Pixel display settings guide.
Make Quick Settings work for you
Swipe down once from the top of the screen to see the first Quick Settings controls; swipe down again to expand the full set. Tap Edit to add, remove, or rearrange controls you use often. Google’s Quick Settings instructions cover Android 11 and later; the exact tiles available can vary. See Google’s Pixel Quick Settings guide.

Choose a transfer route that fits your situation
