Extended desktop mode makes connected displays act as separate parts of one larger computer desktop. You can keep different windows open on each screen and move them between displays. In duplicate mode, by contrast, each display shows the same desktop content.
What extended desktop mode means
Intel describes extended desktop as a larger Windows desktop that spans multiple display devices. In practical terms, each connected display provides its own workspace within the same desktop: for example, you can keep a document on one monitor and a browser on another. The available display count and settings depend on the computer’s graphics hardware and configuration. Intel’s multiple-display FAQ

Extended desktop versus duplicate mode
| Mode | What appears on the displays | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Extended | Separate areas of one desktop. Windows can be placed on different displays or moved between them. | More workspace for multitasking. |
| Duplicate (also called clone) | The same desktop image appears on each display. | Showing the same content on multiple screens. |
Intel’s resolution guidance says clone mode uses a resolution supported by all displays, while extended mode allows separate resolutions for each monitor. This describes Intel’s guidance and should not be treated as a guarantee for every computer or graphics setup. Intel’s resolution guidance
What can differ between displays?
In extended mode, displays may have different supported settings. Intel says resolutions, color depths, and refresh rates can differ; AMD also documents different resolutions, refresh rates, and orientations. The exact combinations available depend on the computer, graphics hardware, displays, and connections. Intel’s multiple-display FAQ · AMD’s display configuration guide

How to enable extended desktop in Windows
These steps follow AMD’s Windows guidance. Names and screens can vary with the Windows version and graphics driver.
- Open Settings > System > Display to view the detected displays.
- Select the display you want to configure.
- Choose Extend desktop to this display, then apply the change if prompted.
- In the display arrangement diagram, drag the numbered display boxes to match the monitors’ physical positions on your desk. This helps the pointer move between screens in the expected direction.
AMD documents selecting the display, choosing the extend option, applying the change, and arranging the display boxes in Windows Display Settings. AMD’s display configuration guide

Legacy Intel Graphics Control Panel
On systems that still use the older Intel Graphics Control Panel, Intel’s instructions are to open Display > Multiple Displays, choose Extended Desktop, and apply the setting. That article is for legacy systems—fifth-generation Intel systems and older—so it is not a universal path for current computers. Intel’s legacy control-panel instructions

“Extended desktop” describes a display mode; it does not guarantee that a particular computer can drive any chosen number of monitors at any resolution or refresh rate. Check the specifications for the exact computer model, including its supported display count, graphics configuration, available outputs, and any dock or adapter requirements. Intel advises consulting the computer manufacturer for system-specific multi-display support. Some laptop makers may also limit which display can be set as the primary display.
