What Is epwd.exe? Is It Safe, and How to Fix epwd.exe Errors on Windows

epwd.exe is normally the Check Point Endpoint Client Watchdog, a Windows service installed with Check Point Endpoint Security VPN or Endpoint Connect. The expected copy is under %Program Files%CheckPointEndpoint Connect and should have a valid digital signature from Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. A matching filename alone does not establish that a file is safe: check its path, signature, and whether the Check Point client is installed before deciding what to do.

What is epwd.exe?

EPWD.exe is the executable for the “Check Point Endpoint Client Watchdog,” a service associated with Check Point Endpoint Security VPN and Endpoint Connect. A malware-analysis record identifies Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. as the publisher and describes the file as signed and verified. SystemLookup lists the service as legitimate and places it in the Check Point Endpoint Connect program directory.

A watchdog is a component that monitors an application or service. In this case, the name and product context indicate that the executable belongs to the Check Point endpoint client. If your organization uses that VPN or endpoint-security software, seeing the service can be expected. If you do not recognize the product, verify the file before assuming it is legitimate or deleting it.

The filename is usually shown in uppercase or lowercase depending on the Windows interface, but EPWD.exe and epwd.exe refer to the same executable name. What matters is the complete path, the signer, and the service and product associated with it.

Is epwd.exe safe, or could it be a virus?

The normal Check Point-installed copy is supported as legitimate by the available file-specific evidence. A herdProtect analysis dated September 24, 2026, reported 0 detections among 68 scanners for the analyzed file. That is a point-in-time result for that sample—not a guarantee about every file named epwd.exe, every version, or a copy on your PC.

Use the following checks together. No single one is conclusive:

  • Check the full path. The expected directory is %Program Files%CheckPointEndpoint Connect. A copy in AppData, Temp, Downloads, or an unrelated system folder is a reason to investigate further. Malware often relies on a familiar filename while hiding in a user-writable directory.
  • Check the digital signature. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Confirm that the signer is Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. If the tab is missing, the signature is invalid, or the signer differs, do not treat the filename as proof of authenticity.
  • Check the product context. Look in Windows’ installed-app list for Check Point Endpoint Security or Endpoint Connect. If the file is running as a service, its expected name is “Check Point Endpoint Client Watchdog.”
  • Check the security result. Review Microsoft Defender’s detection name and file location. A warning attached to an unexpected copy deserves more caution than a reputation warning on an installer obtained from a verified vendor channel.

SystemLookup lists the service under the Check Point Endpoint Connect directory, and a Check Point Endpoint Security exclusion list includes epwd.exe among the product executables. Those details support the expected identity, but they do not validate a differently located or unsigned copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A SmartScreen or antivirus warning also needs context. Microsoft explains that a warning about unknown software can mean there is not enough reputation information; it is not, by itself, proof of malware. At the same time, limited reputation is not a reason to ignore the warning. For this file, verify that it came with the Check Point client and that its signature is valid before considering any allow action.

How to inspect the file without running it

  1. Open Task Manager and locate epwd.exe if it is currently running.
  2. Use the option to open its file location, then record the complete path. If Task Manager does not show it, open Services and inspect the executable path for the Check Point Endpoint Client Watchdog entry.
  3. Close the properties window only after recording the file version, publisher, and signature status. Do not launch a second copy from a search result or a download folder.
  4. Compare the path and signer with the installed Check Point product. A valid signature on a file outside the product directory is still a reason to ask why that copy exists.

Why is epwd.exe running at startup?

If Check Point Endpoint Security or Endpoint Connect is installed, the watchdog may start with Windows because it operates as a service for that client. Its presence at startup is not automatically suspicious. A watchdog is intended to remain available so the endpoint client can detect or recover from service problems while the VPN or security functions are in use.

If you do not use the Check Point software, or the service appears to be running from an unexpected folder, confirm which executable the service points to before changing startup settings. A familiar service name can be copied by an impostor, so inspect the path rather than relying on the display name alone.

To inspect the service, open the Windows Services app and look for Check Point Endpoint Client Watchdog. Review its status and the executable path associated with the service. If you rely on the Check Point VPN, do not disable the watchdog merely to suppress a startup message: doing so may interfere with the client. If the application is no longer needed, remove the parent Check Point product through Windows instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a startup failure can look like

  • A Windows message appears immediately after sign-in.
  • The Check Point VPN fails to connect even though the client opens.
  • The watchdog service starts and stops repeatedly.
  • Task Manager shows unusual CPU use from the process.
  • Windows reports that the file cannot be found, cannot start, or is blocked.

These symptoms do not identify a single cause. They are reasons to collect the path, signature, service status, client version, and Event Viewer details before attempting a repair.

What causes epwd.exe errors?

The name of the executable does not identify the cause. An error can be associated with a damaged or incomplete Check Point installation, a disabled watchdog service, an outdated client, permissions or driver conflicts, or a malicious file impersonating the legitimate executable. Common signs include a startup error, failed Check Point VPN connection, repeated watchdog restarts, or unusually high CPU use.

Before changing anything, record the exact error message, the full file path, the signature result, and whether Check Point software is installed. If the issue is a service startup failure, check the watchdog service and the related entries in Event Viewer. The event details and the Check Point client version can help distinguish an installation or service problem from a security incident.

Match the symptom to the safest first action

Symptom First checks Avoid
Startup error on a managed work PC Record the message, service status, client version, and Event Viewer entry; contact IT Replacing the executable with a random download
VPN will not connect Confirm the watchdog is present, then repair or update the approved Check Point package Disabling the watchdog just to remove the message
High CPU or repeated restarts Verify path and signature, then scan with updated Defender Whitelisting the process solely because its name is familiar
Defender detects the file Record the detection and location, run a full scan, and use Defender Offline if needed Restoring or allowing the file without checking the detection
Unused Check Point software Uninstall the parent product and restart Windows Deleting only epwd.exe

How to fix epwd.exe errors safely

1. Record the error and verify the file

  1. When the error appears, write down its complete wording, any error code, and when it occurs—for example, during startup or when you connect to the VPN.
  2. In Task Manager, locate the process if it is running, then use the option to open its file location. If it is not running, use the service details or search for epwd.exe in the Check Point installation folder. Record the full path; do not open or run a copy from an unfamiliar location.
  3. Right-click the file, select Properties, and check Digital Signatures. The expected signer is Check Point Software Technologies Ltd.
  4. Confirm whether Check Point Endpoint Security or Endpoint Connect is installed and whether the service is named Check Point Endpoint Client Watchdog.
  5. Record the installed Check Point version and whether the problem affects only the VPN or other endpoint-security functions as well.

This short inventory prevents a common mistake: repairing a legitimate installation when the reported file is actually an unrelated executable with the same name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. If the path or signature is suspicious, scan before repairing

If the file is outside the expected Check Point directory, has no valid Check Point signature, or is flagged by Microsoft Defender, do not whitelist it just because its name looks familiar. Update Microsoft Defender security intelligence, then run a full scan. Microsoft’s support guidance recommends a full scan and says to use Microsoft Defender Offline when unwanted software persists. Follow the detection details and Microsoft’s recommended response rather than trying to repair or restore a file Defender identifies as a threat.

If Defender reports a detection, keep the detection name and location for your records. Do not download a replacement epwd.exe from a file-hosting site: a standalone executable may not match your installed client and could be unsafe. If the issue persists after the full scan, use Defender Offline as Microsoft advises, then recheck the result before reinstalling Check Point software.

Do not add an exclusion while an investigation is incomplete. An exclusion can hide a malicious impersonator and can make later troubleshooting harder. If an organization manages the computer, provide the detection details to its IT or security team instead of changing policy yourself.

3. If the file is authentic and Check Point is needed, repair the parent client

For a correctly located, correctly signed file with a Check Point client you still need, use the repair or reinstall option for the supported Check Point package from your organization’s approved source. If your workplace manages the VPN, contact its IT team for the correct package and installation procedure; an organization may use a particular client build or configuration. Do not replace just the executable or use an installer from an unverified download site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repair is the appropriate first choice when the product is still required and the problem looks like a damaged installation or missing component. A reinstall may be needed when repair cannot restore the service registration or when the installed package is incomplete. In either case, use the package approved for your organization rather than mixing files from different Check Point releases.

After repair or reinstall, restart Windows and test the same action that triggered the error, such as starting the VPN connection. If the error remains, note the client version, exact message, and time of the failure, then check the watchdog service and Event Viewer entries. These details can help an administrator determine whether the problem is the client installation, service startup, permissions, or a driver conflict.

4. If the service is failing to start, inspect it rather than deleting the file

  1. Open Services from the Windows search box and find Check Point Endpoint Client Watchdog.
  2. Check whether the service is present and whether it is running. If it is stopped or cannot start, record the displayed status or error instead of repeatedly changing service settings.
  3. Open Event Viewer and inspect the Windows logs around the time of the failure. Use the error details alongside the exact Windows message and installed Check Point client version.
  4. If you are not the administrator of the device, share those details with your organization’s IT team. Update the Check Point client through the organization’s approved process rather than downloading a replacement file or changing managed settings.

Do not delete epwd.exe to clear a service error. Removing only the executable can leave a broken service registration and does not repair the Check Point installation. It can also remove a component that the VPN expects, turning a recoverable service issue into a larger client failure.

5. If you no longer need Check Point Endpoint Security

If the VPN or endpoint client is no longer required, uninstall the parent Check Point Endpoint Security or Endpoint Connect product through Windows’ installed-app settings, or through Programs and Features on versions that use that Control Panel view. Restart Windows afterward. Removing the product as a whole is safer than deleting the watchdog executable alone because it lets the uninstaller remove the associated components and service registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose removal rather than repair only when the Check Point software is genuinely no longer needed. If another administrator, employer, school, or VPN profile depends on it, uninstalling can remove required access. On a managed device, confirm with IT before changing or removing the product.

Repair, reinstall, or remove: which option fits?

  • Repair: Best when the Check Point VPN is still required, the file is correctly signed and located, and the symptoms suggest a damaged installation or service component.
  • Reinstall or update: Best when repair fails, the client is outdated, or the organization has supplied a specific supported build. Use only an approved Check Point package.
  • Remove: Best when the endpoint client is no longer needed. Uninstall the complete parent product and restart instead of deleting epwd.exe.
  • Security response: Best when the path, signature, or Defender result is suspicious. Scan first, preserve the detection details, and do not whitelist or replace the file manually.

The decision depends on five facts: whether Check Point VPN is still required, whether the file has a valid Check Point signature, whether it is in the expected program directory, whether Defender detects a threat, and whether the failure is a service problem or part of a broader malware incident.

What to do if Windows says “Windows protected your PC”

Do not apply “Run anyway” instructions for another vendor’s installer to an arbitrary epwd.exe. An official support article from ASUS describes that choice for an official ASUS download that has undergone its security checks; that is not evidence about a Check Point file. Microsoft also cautions that unknown software can carry more risk.

For the Check Point executable, first confirm its source, expected location, and Check Point digital signature. If any of those checks fail—or Defender identifies a threat—do not allow it to run. If the file appears to be the authentic client but Windows still blocks it, ask your organization’s IT team to confirm the correct package and policy before making an exception.

Can you delete epwd.exe?

Do not delete the file by itself. If you still use Check Point Endpoint Security or its VPN, removing the watchdog may break or destabilize the client. If you no longer need the software, uninstall the parent product through Windows and restart. If you suspect the file is malicious, use Microsoft Defender’s scan and response process rather than manually deleting a file that may be part of an installed client.

Deleting a file from a service folder can also leave Windows pointing to a path that no longer exists. That may produce repeated startup errors even after the suspected process is gone. The safer sequence is to establish whether the copy is legitimate, scan when appropriate, and then repair or uninstall the product that owns the service.

Frequently asked questions

Is epwd.exe required for Check Point VPN?

It is the executable associated with the Check Point Endpoint Client Watchdog service. If your organization’s Endpoint Security or Endpoint Connect installation uses that service, removing or disabling it can interfere with the client. Ask the administrator who supplied the VPN before changing it.

Does 0 out of 68 detections prove my copy is safe?

No. The herdProtect result dated September 24, 2026, describes one analyzed sample at one point in time. Your file could be a different version, a modified copy, or an impostor. Verify the path, Check Point signature, installed-product context, and current Defender result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is epwd.exe in AppData or Temp?

That is not the documented Check Point Endpoint Connect location and deserves extra scrutiny. Record the path, do not whitelist the file, update Defender, and run a full scan. A familiar filename in a user-writable directory should not be treated as the vendor copy.

What if the Digital Signatures tab is missing?

A missing or invalid signature means the file has not passed the expected authenticity check. Do not assume it is safe because the service name looks correct. Confirm the installed product, scan with updated Defender, and contact IT or reinstall from an approved package if the file is supposed to be part of Check Point Endpoint Security.

Can I stop the Check Point Endpoint Client Watchdog service?

You can inspect its status, but do not stop or disable it merely to hide a startup message when you still rely on the VPN or endpoint client. Troubleshoot the service or repair the parent product instead. If the software is no longer needed, uninstall it through Windows.

Should I download epwd.exe separately?

No. A lone executable from a file-hosting site may be unsafe or incompatible with your installed client. Repair or reinstall the complete, organization-approved Check Point package.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I give IT support?

Provide the exact Windows message or error code, when it occurs, the full file path, the Digital Signatures result, the Check Point client version, the watchdog service status, relevant Event Viewer details, and any Microsoft Defender detection name and location. This information helps separate a damaged installation from a suspicious file.

Is a SmartScreen warning always a virus alert?

No. Microsoft notes that unknown-software warnings can reflect limited reputation information. However, the warning still calls for verification. Check the source, path, signer, and Defender result before allowing the file to run.

If the manual checks point to a Windows file or configuration problem beyond the Check Point client, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut that can address some common Windows issues and adjust system settings; it complements antivirus software and does not replace it. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is epwd.exe?

It is normally the Check Point Endpoint Client Watchdog executable installed with Check Point Endpoint Security VPN or Endpoint Connect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is epwd.exe safe?

The expected copy is signed by Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. and resides under the Check Point Endpoint Connect program directory. Verify those details on your computer; the filename alone is not proof.

Why does epwd.exe run at startup?

The watchdog runs as a Windows service so the Check Point endpoint client can be monitored. Do not disable it if you still need the VPN without first consulting IT.

How do I fix an epwd.exe error?

Record the error, verify the path and signature, scan with updated Microsoft Defender when anything is suspicious, then repair or reinstall the approved Check Point package. Uninstall the parent product if it is no longer needed.

Can I delete epwd.exe?

Do not delete it by itself. Removing only the executable can leave a broken service registration. Uninstall the complete Check Point product instead, or follow Defender’s response process if the file is malicious.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if Windows blocks epwd.exe?

Verify the source, expected Check Point path, and digital signature. If Defender detects a threat or those checks fail, do not allow it. Ask IT to confirm the correct package and policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: epwd.exe normally belongs to Check Point Endpoint Security and serves as the Check Point Endpoint Client Watchdog. Confirm the Check Point path, Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. signature, installed-product context, and Defender results before allowing, repairing, disabling, or removing it. For a legitimate installation, repair or reinstall the parent client; for an obsolete installation, uninstall the product; for a suspicious copy, scan and follow Microsoft’s security response instead of deleting or downloading a replacement executable.
