What Is Embedded Finance, and How Do Payment Platforms Power It?

Embedded finance places payments and other financial services inside non-financial apps and workflows. Here’s how platforms connect providers—and what customers should check.

Embedded finance puts a financial service—such as a payment, loan, insurance policy or account—inside a non-financial product or workflow, so customers can use it where the need arises. Payment platforms help make that possible by connecting the interface to banks, payment firms and other providers, often through APIs. The platform’s brand may be prominent, but it is not necessarily the institution that holds funds, makes lending decisions or carries the regulatory obligations.

What embedded finance means

The European Banking Authority defines embedded finance as “the integration of financial services into primarily non-financial platforms” in its report Navigating the Path to Embedded Finance (EBA report). The defining feature is context: a financial service appears inside the experience where a customer needs it, rather than requiring a separate trip to a bank or insurer.

  • A shopper is offered installment financing at online checkout.
  • A traveler can select insurance while booking a flight.
  • A merchant can access an account through shop-management software.
  • A driver can be offered a debit card through a car-sharing service.

Embedded finance is broader than payments. It can include lending, insurance, deposits, account services and investment management. A payment feature is one possible embedded service, not the definition of the whole category.

How payment platforms connect the experience to financial services

A payment platform can put a payment option into a retailer’s app, website or business software, then coordinate the technical connections behind it. APIs and other secure data-exchange methods can link the customer-facing product with banks, non-bank payment firms, payment networks and technology providers. Partnerships determine which organization supplies each service and performs each task.

  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.

  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

The platform may provide software, integration, a branded interface or operational coordination. A partner may provide the regulated payment service, issue a card, hold an account or supply other infrastructure. The precise division varies by arrangement; a platform should not be assumed to perform every regulated or operational function just because its name appears on the screen. The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision describes providers that connect banks and fintech or embedded-finance firms through technology, platform, coding and sponsorship arrangements, with services that can include payments, deposits, lending, identity checks, card issuance and investments (Basel Committee report, Digitalisation of finance).

What happens when a card payment is made?

A card transaction illustrates why the visible checkout is only one layer of a payment. In Norges Bank’s description of the Norwegian BankAxept system, the terminal sends an authorization request to a central processor, which checks and forwards it to the issuing bank. The issuer approves or declines, and the response travels back through the processor to the terminal. Clearing and settlement take place afterward through payment infrastructure and participating banks (Norges Bank, Norway’s Financial System 2026).

  1. Authorization: The system asks the issuer whether the transaction can be approved.
  2. Response: The approval or decline returns to the point of sale.
  3. Clearing and settlement: Transaction information is reconciled and funds are transferred afterward through the relevant infrastructure and institutions.

Norges Bank says the authorization response normally takes less than half a second in the BankAxept flow it describes. That timing is specific to that system and should not be treated as a general speed for all card networks or payment rails.

How open banking can support payments

Open banking is another way a digital service can connect to a customer’s bank account. Under the PSD2 framework as explained by Deutsche Bundesbank for Germany, a payment-initiation provider can submit a credit-transfer order to the customer’s bank on the customer’s behalf after receiving consent. An account-information provider can retrieve account balances and transactions and organize that information. Strong customer authentication also applies; in Germany, the Bundesbank says payment-initiation providers need licensing and account-information providers need registration with supervisory authorities (Deutsche Bundesbank, third-party payment service provider FAQ).

  • A battery that can power through your shift and offline payments let you keep selling, even if your internet is down.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one simple rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts required.

These are Germany-specific explanations of PSD2-related roles, not a universal description of every country’s rules or implementation. Consent matters: customers should understand what information or payment action they authorize and which provider receives that permission.

Who provides the service, and what happens if a provider fails?

A familiar app or retailer brand does not identify the legal entity providing a payment service or account. Before using a non-bank provider, check the provider’s legal name, permissions and the terms that explain who holds or safeguards funds. The UK Financial Conduct Authority advises consumers to verify a payment-service provider’s legal identity and regulatory status (FCA, Using payment service providers).

In the UK, non-bank payment providers such as electronic-money institutions and payment institutions are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme for funds held with them. Electronic-money institutions and authorized payment institutions must safeguard customer funds; small payment institutions are not required to safeguard funds. Safeguarding is not the same as deposit insurance: the FCA says customers should receive most of their money if a firm fails, but repayment can take time and may not be complete. These statements describe UK rules, not protections in every jurisdiction.

Questions to check before relying on an embedded service

Because the customer journey can hide a complex chain of providers, assess the arrangement by asking practical questions rather than judging it by the interface alone:

Square Register (2nd Generation) - Powered by POS
  • A complete countertop point of sale — Combine dual responsive touchscreens, built-in POS software, and durable hardware for a fast, reliable checkout experience.

  • Handle real-world demands — Resist everyday spills, dust, and wear with a durable, IP54-rated design.
  • Stay reliable through every rush — Maintain strong connectivity and consistent performance through your busiest hours.
  • Who supplies the service? Identify the legal provider of the account, payment, loan or insurance, as well as the platform hosting the feature.
  • Who holds or safeguards funds? Check whether funds are held by a bank or non-bank provider and what protection applies in your jurisdiction.
  • What does consent allow? For account access or payment initiation, review the data and actions the customer authorizes.
  • Who handles problems? Find out which party receives complaints and handles unauthorized payments or fraud reports.
  • What happens during an outage? Check how access, payments and support are handled if the platform or one of its providers is unavailable.
  • Which regulator’s rules apply? Protections and authorization requirements depend on the provider type and jurisdiction.

Digitalization can create useful, convenient services while also introducing operational and supervisory questions for customers, banks and the wider financial system. The Basel Committee’s report discusses those broader implications, but the actual responsibilities and protections depend on the specific service and its providers.

How widespread is branded financial service delivery?

In an October 14, 2025 press release, the European Banking Authority reported that 35% of banks responding to its 2025 Spring Risk Assessment Questionnaire used white labelling. The EBA describes white labelling as a financial institution partnering with another firm, which may be non-financial, to offer products or services under the partner’s brand (EBA press release). This is a survey result for the responding banks and a related branded-partnership model; it is not the share of all banks or a measure of embedded-finance transactions.
