Terafab is a planned chip-manufacturing initiative associated with Tesla and SpaceX—not an operating mega-fab. Its announced design would combine mask design, logic and memory fabrication, and advanced packaging to supply chips for Tesla vehicles and Optimus robots, as well as SpaceX’s planned orbital computing infrastructure. The companies’ long-term target is one terawatt of annual compute capacity, but that is an aspiration, not current production.
What is Elon Musk’s Terafab?
Terafab is the name Tesla and SpaceX use for a proposed integrated semiconductor-manufacturing operation. The plan is to bring several stages of chip development and production together: lithography-mask design, logic and memory fabrication, and advanced packaging. The stated aim is to make testing and iteration faster by coordinating those steps under one roof. That is an announced operating goal, not a demonstrated commercial capability.

What would Terafab make?
SpaceX’s June 2026 prospectus describes two broad chip categories: terrestrial processors for edge computing and inference, intended mainly for Tesla vehicles and Optimus robots; and processors designed for the space environment to support orbital computing. SpaceX’s prospectus
#1 Best Overall
- 5 x 5 inches, 0.67 ounces, 0.03 inches thick. Some wafers are marked with alignment marks.
- The pattern is produced by light diffraction, and its reflective appearance changes with the viewing angle.
- Silicon wafers are fragile—please handle with care.
- Circuit details can be examined under a microscope.
Chips for Tesla vehicles and Optimus
The terrestrial chips are intended to handle AI computing close to where it is used, including in vehicles and robots. Terafab’s website labels AI5 and AI6 for Tesla use. Those labels show how the project represents its intended scope; they do not establish that Terafab is already manufacturing those chips.
Processors for orbital computing
SpaceX describes a second category of processors optimized for space and intended for orbital compute infrastructure. Terafab’s website labels the space-oriented chip D3. As with AI5 and AI6, the label is a representation of the plan, not proof of production.

Logic, memory, and packaging
The announced scope is broader than making processor logic alone: it includes memory and advanced packaging as well as mask design. The disclosures do not give a complete product catalogue, production yields, or a detailed breakdown of which chip components would be made at each stage.

Elon Musk has said the companies expect their need for AI chips to grow beyond what they can efficiently obtain, with memory supply a particular concern alongside logic. On Tesla’s April 22, 2026 earnings call, he characterized the motivation as avoiding a future supply bottleneck, rather than using in-house manufacturing as a bargaining tactic with suppliers. That is management’s rationale and forecast, not an independently established shortage.

- Precision 3D-Printed Resin Core – Multi‑layer colored detailing accurately reproduces chip architecture
- High-Clarity Acrylic Shell – Fully transparent for unobstructed internal structure viewing
- Compact Study Size – 80×80×30 mm, ideal for desktop display and hands‑on handling
- Educational Focus – Designed for classroom instruction, university labs, science fairs, and tech exhibitions
- Steady & Lightweight – Sturdy yet portable for repeated use in teaching environments
SpaceX’s prospectus says the project is intended to expand internal chip manufacturing while the company continues to source a significant portion of its compute hardware from third parties. Terafab is therefore described as complementing existing supplier relationships, not immediately replacing outside foundries or memory suppliers. SpaceX’s prospectus
What has been announced so far?
Tesla’s Giga Texas research fab
On the April 22, 2026 earnings call, Musk said Tesla would build a research fab at Giga Texas. He estimated its cost at roughly $3 billion and its intended scale at a few thousand wafer starts per month. Both are his estimates for the research facility, not final disclosed costs or production figures for a scaled Terafab.

SpaceX later said Tesla broke ground in April 2026 on the Giga Texas North Campus research fab, describing it as a precursor to Terafab. This is the announced early step; it does not mean a full-scale Terafab is built or producing chips. SpaceX’s prospectus
SpaceX and Intel’s stated roles
Musk said SpaceX would take care of the initial phase of scaled Terafab, while the division of responsibilities beyond those early steps was still being worked out. SpaceX’s prospectus says Intel joined in April 2026 and was expected to contribute expertise in designing, fabricating, and packaging high-performance chips.

On the earnings call, Musk said the plan was to use Intel’s 14A process and partner on core manufacturing technologies. He also noted that 14A was not yet complete at the time. This is a stated plan, not evidence that the process has been deployed at Terafab.

The announced research fab is at Giga Texas, on the North Campus. The cited public disclosures do not establish a committed site for the scaled Terafab, an opening date, or a production schedule. SpaceX says specific projects, timelines, milestones, and capital expenditures had not yet been determined. Musk also said deployment details and the division of responsibility were still being worked out. SpaceX’s prospectus
What does Terafab’s one-terawatt target mean?
SpaceX and Terafab describe one terawatt of annual compute capacity as a long-term goal. It is a target for compute capacity, not a measure of the facility’s current output, and the cited disclosures do not give a construction schedule for reaching it. Terafab’s website compares the target with current U.S. annual electricity consumption, but the comparison does not change what the figure represents: a company-stated ambition rather than demonstrated chip production.
