To make Snapchat more private, set Contact Me to Friends, limit your Story audience, and turn on Ghost Mode or choose specific friends for Snap Map location sharing. These controls are separate: restricting direct contact does not remove shared Group Chats, and changing a Story setting does not change the audience for Snaps already posted.
Snapchat’s current standard-account settings, as of October 3, 2026, are under Profile → Settings → App & Privacy. Labels and availability can vary by app version and account type.

Check group chats separately
Friends-only contact does not prevent someone from messaging you in a Group Chat you share. Check a group’s members before joining, and leave it if you do not want to remain in that contact channel. If a non-friend sends an unwanted message, the Chat may offer Report or Block.
How do I make my Snapchat Stories private?
Go to App & Privacy → My Privacy & Data → Who Can See → View My Story. Choose My Friends or Custom to exclude particular friends. If you have a Public Profile, adjust My Story privacy from that profile. My Story · Public is different from a friends-only Story: it can be seen by friends, followers, and anyone on Snapchat. See Snapchat’s privacy-setting guidance.
Can people still see old Story Snaps after I change my settings?
Yes, potentially. Each Snap keeps the audience setting that was active when it was posted; changing the setting later does not retroactively narrow that Snap’s audience. Review or remove an existing Story post if its original audience was broader than you intended. See Snapchat Support’s Story privacy instructions.
How do I stop people seeing my Snap Map location?
Open the Snap Map and tap its gear, or go to Settings → My Privacy & Data → Who Can See → See My Location. Choose the option that fits how much you want to share:
- Ghost Mode: hides your live location from others on the Map.
- My Friends, Except…: shares with friends other than the people you exclude.
- Only These Friends: shares with the friends you select.
Snapchat says that when device location permission is set to Only while using, the Map location expires after 24 hours. For the current controls and permission details, see Snapchat Support’s location-sharing instructions.
Ghost Mode does not hide every location clue
Ghost Mode controls live location sharing; it does not guarantee that content reveals no location. Snaps submitted to Snap Map may still appear on the Map regardless of your location-sharing choice. A recipient can also capture a Snap or location in a screenshot, or photograph the screen with another device. Snapchat notes that Snaps are designed to delete by default, but recipients can still capture them; see Snapchat’s safety and security guidance.

In App & Privacy → My Privacy & Data, review Find Friends visibility and the Activity Indicator. Find Friends affects whether Snapchat suggests your account to others; it is separate from Contact Me, which governs who can send direct Snaps, Chats, and calls. Snapchat says a Find Friends visibility change may take up to 72 hours to take effect.
What should I do about unwanted contact or harassment?
Use Block to stop contact from an account and Report to alert Snapchat to abuse. You can also leave a Group Chat. For a message from someone who is not your friend, Snapchat says the Chat may offer Report or Block, and that the person will not know they were hidden or blocked. The company’s safety guidance is at Snapchat Support.
Privacy settings are not account-security settings. Snapchat separately recommends keeping recovery details current and using strong login protection; consult its security and safety guidance for account-protection steps.
Is Snapchat Family Center a privacy setting?
No. Family Center is an optional set of tools for parents, carers, or trusted adults over 18, rather than a setting that gives an adult access to private message contents. Snapchat says it can show a teen’s friends and the people or groups they chatted with in the last seven days, group member lists, new-friend visibility, some content restrictions, and other safety tools. It does not reveal message contents. See Snapchat’s Family Center overview.
