ebu4a2d.exe cannot be identified as a standard Windows component or a known malware family from its filename alone. No authoritative exact-match identification was found for that name, and Microsoft documentation does not list it as a Windows file. Treat it as an unknown executable: do not open it to test what happens, do not add it to Microsoft Defender exclusions, and do not delete it blindly. First establish its complete path, cryptographic hash, signature, parent process and startup mechanism, then scan and remove or repair the program that actually created it.
What the name ebu4a2d.exe tells you—and what it does not
The .exe suffix means that Windows treats the file as executable code. The string ebu4a2d is only a filename. Software installers, temporary downloaders, bundled utilities and malicious programs can all choose arbitrary names, so the spelling is not a safety certificate, a Windows component name or a malware-family diagnosis.

A canonical exact-match search produced no result that identifies ebu4a2d.exe, and Microsoft’s published malware-naming guidance does not use this filename as a family name. Microsoft also explains that it cannot have information about every program and that recognition of a newly released threat can lag its appearance. “Not identified” therefore means “insufficient evidence,” not “safe.”
To determine what is on your particular PC, you need evidence tied to that copy of the file:

- the full folder path and drive;
- file size, creation and modification timestamps;
- the SHA-256 hash;
- whether the file has a valid digital signature and who signed it;
- the process that launched it, its command line and any network activity;
- the startup location, scheduled task, service or parent application associated with it; and
- the result of an up-to-date Microsoft Defender scan.
Two files with the same name can be unrelated. Conversely, a file in a trusted-looking folder can still be replaced or launched by an unwanted program. Judge the complete context, not the label.
Is ebu4a2d.exe a virus or malware?
There is no evidence in the available documentation that every file named ebu4a2d.exe is a virus, and there is no evidence that every such file is legitimate. A filename alone cannot answer the question. Microsoft SmartScreen reputation decisions consider factors such as a program’s digital signature and how it was obtained; an unsolicited download or an unsigned executable deserves caution, but an unsigned file is not conclusive proof of malware.
Microsoft’s malware names describe a detection’s type, platform, family and variant. An arbitrary filename is not the same thing as a detection name. If Defender identifies a specific threat, record that detection name and follow its remediation instructions. If it reports no threat, continue investigating when the file is unexpected, repeatedly returns or causes errors; a clean scan is useful evidence, not a guarantee about an unknown sample.
Do not run the file just to see what happens
Opening an unfamiliar executable can install software, create persistence, alter settings or connect to a remote service before you have recorded useful evidence. The safer sequence is to document it while it is inert, scan it, and identify the program or Windows mechanism that launched it.
Step 1: Locate the exact copy and preserve evidence
- If it is running, open Task Manager. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Details, locateebu4a2d.exe, right-click it and choose Open file location. If more than one process has that name, record every path. Do not choose End task until you have captured the path and process details, unless the process is actively damaging the system. - Record the file properties. In File Explorer, right-click the file, choose Properties, and note the location, size, creation date, modified date and version information. Use a photograph or text note so the information remains available if the file is quarantined.
- Calculate a SHA-256 hash without launching the file. In PowerShell, change the path to the one you recorded and run
Get-FileHash -LiteralPath 'C:fullpathebu4a2d.exe' -Algorithm SHA256. Copy the complete hash. A hash identifies that exact byte-for-byte copy; a different copy, even with the same name, has a different value. - Record the process context. In Task Manager’s Details tab, add or inspect columns such as PID, Parent process ID and Command line when available. A command line that points to a temporary, Downloads or user-profile folder is worth more scrutiny than a path created by a program you knowingly installed, but location alone is not a verdict.
Step 2: Check the digital signature and publisher
Right-click the file, select Properties and open Digital Signatures. Select each signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid, that the signer is the vendor you expected and that the signing certificate has not expired or been revoked. A signer you do not recognize, a missing signature or an invalid signature is a warning signal. It does not by itself prove that the file is malicious: many small or older programs are unsigned, and a valid certificate does not explain why an unexpected file appeared.

You can record the same information in PowerShell:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature -LiteralPath 'C:fullpathebu4a2d.exe'
Compare the signer with the application that was installed or updated when the file first appeared. Do not trust a publisher name merely because it resembles a familiar company; verify that the parent program came from an official source and that its installation date matches the file’s timestamps.
Step 3: Update Defender and run a full scan
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Choose Virus & threat protection, then select Protection updates and choose Check for updates. Current security intelligence gives the scanner the best chance of recognizing recent threats.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan and start it. A full scan can take a long time, especially on a large drive, so keep the computer powered on.
- When the scan finishes, open Protection history. Record the detection name, affected path and action taken. Allow Defender to quarantine a confirmed threat rather than restoring it.
Do not create an exclusion for ebu4a2d.exe simply because an application says it needs one. Exclusions prevent Defender from checking the item and can hide a persistent problem.

If the alert returns after a full scan, the process restarts immediately, or the file is active before normal Windows services load, use the offline scan. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan and select Scan now. Save open work first: Windows restarts and scans outside the normal desktop. After Windows starts again, review Protection history for the result.
An offline scan is especially useful when a running process, service or startup entry interferes with removal. It does not identify the legitimate owner of an unknown file, so retain the path, hash and signature information even when Defender removes the sample.
Step 5: Find what launches ebu4a2d.exe at startup
Repeated startup messages usually mean that Windows is calling a file that was moved, quarantined or deleted, or that an unwanted program has established persistence. Check each possible launch point carefully and record the entry before changing it.

Startup apps
Open Settings > Apps > Startup (Windows 11 and current Windows 10 builds) and turn off an entry only when you know which application owns it. You can also inspect Task Manager > Startup apps for the startup impact and publisher fields. Disabling an entry stops automatic launch; it does not remove the underlying program.
Recommended Free Tools
Startup folders
Press Win+R, enter shell:startup, and inspect the current user’s Startup folder. To inspect the all-users folder, enter shell:common startup. Remove a shortcut only after confirming that it targets the unknown executable and that no legitimate application requires it. Keep a copy of the shortcut’s target and location for troubleshooting.
Run registry values
Common automatic-launch locations include HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun. Use Registry Editor only after creating a restore point or exporting the specific key. Do not delete an entire key; remove only a value that clearly points to the investigated file and whose owner you have identified. Registry mistakes can prevent applications or Windows from starting.
Scheduled tasks
Open Task Scheduler, select Task Scheduler Library, and inspect tasks whose Actions launch ebu4a2d.exe or a script that calls it. Check the task’s author, trigger, creation date and action path. Disable the task first if you need to stop repeated execution, export it for your records, and delete it only when the associated program is confirmed unwanted.
Services
Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and inspect services whose executable path references the file. A service can be essential, so do not change its startup type or stop it solely because the filename is unfamiliar. Identify the installing application, then repair or uninstall that application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.

Step 6: Decide whether to quarantine, remove or repair
| Evidence | Safer next action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Defender detects a threat and the path is unexpected | Allow quarantine, complete the scan and review Protection history | The scanner has a detection classification; preserve the hash and path for records. |
| The file belongs to a recently installed, expected application and has a valid matching signature | Use that application’s repair or reinstall option from its official installer | Blind deletion could break the program or leave a startup reference behind. |
| The file is in a temporary or Downloads folder, has no expected parent and has no trustworthy signature | Quarantine it after scanning; retain the hash and timestamps | There is no established legitimate owner to repair. |
| A startup entry remains after removal | Disable the specific Run value, task, service or shortcut after exporting it | Removing the file alone can leave a broken launch reference and recurring error. |
| Several copies exist | Compare each path, hash, signer, parent process and startup mechanism separately | Identical names do not establish identical files. |
If you cannot identify the owner, do not delete the file while Windows is running normally. Keep it quarantined or isolated according to Defender’s result and seek analysis from the software vendor associated with the parent process. A vendor can use the SHA-256 hash and installation context to determine whether the file belongs to its product.
Step 7: Repair the parent program when an error names it
Some messages mention ebu4a2d.exe because a legitimate application cannot find, load or start one of its components. After Defender reports a clean system or completes remediation, identify the parent program from the error text, Task Manager’s command line or the startup entry.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the identified application, choose its menu and use Repair when available.
- If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the application. Restart Windows and remove only leftover folders that clearly belong to that application.
- Download the current installer from the application maker’s official site, verify that the installer matches your Windows edition and processor architecture, and reinstall.
- Recheck startup entries and Task Scheduler after reinstalling. A stale reference to the old path can continue producing the same error.
Do not download a replacement ebu4a2d.exe from an unofficial DLL or EXE archive. Substituting an unknown executable can introduce a second problem and does not establish which application needs it.
Common error patterns and what they mean
“ebu4a2d.exe was not found” at sign-in
Windows is probably attempting to launch a file that has been deleted, moved or quarantined. Find and disable the responsible startup item, Run value, scheduled task or service after recording it. If the entry belongs to a legitimate application, reinstall that application instead of downloading the missing file.

High CPU, memory or disk use
In Task Manager, sort by the resource that is elevated and verify that the process path is the same copy you investigated. Capture the command line and parent process before ending it. Run Defender’s full scan and, if necessary, the offline scan. If the resource spike stops when the associated legitimate application is closed, repair or reinstall that application rather than deleting its executable.
The file keeps returning after deletion
Repeated recreation indicates that an installer, scheduled task, service, browser download or another process is restoring it. Scan offline, inspect every persistence location and identify the parent program. Deleting only the visible file leaves the mechanism that recreates it.
How to compare multiple samples safely
When two computers or two folders contain ebu4a2d.exe, create a comparison record instead of assuming they are the same:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Comparison field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Path | Drive, complete folders and whether the location is temporary, user-profile, program-installation or system-owned. |
| Hash | Full SHA-256 value from Get-FileHash. |
| Signature | Valid or invalid status, signer and certificate details. |
| Context | Parent process, command line, PID and the application installed or updated when it appeared. |
| Persistence | Startup app, shortcut, Run value, scheduled task or service that launches it. |
| Security result | Defender scan date, detection name if any, and quarantine or remediation action. |
Only matching hashes establish that the files are byte-for-byte identical. Matching filenames, sizes or timestamps are not enough.
When deletion is appropriate—and when it is not
Deletion is reasonable only after a scan or trusted vendor investigation identifies the file as unwanted and you have removed the mechanism that launches it. If Defender quarantines the file, leave it in quarantine while you confirm that the parent application and Windows startup process still work. If the file is part of a legitimate program, use that program’s uninstall or repair process; manual deletion can break updates, leave missing-file errors or remove a component shared by other software.
If an unknown file is in a temporary or download folder, has no expected parent and is not needed by a known application, quarantine is safer than opening it. Keep the hash, path and timestamps in case the software vendor or a security analyst requests them.
Quick Recap
Questions that cannot be answered from the filename alone
- Is every ebu4a2d.exe dangerous? No conclusion applies to every copy; each sample needs its own path, signature, hash, parent and scan result.
- Can I delete it? Only after identifying what created it and removing any startup mechanism. Quarantine or repair is safer when ownership is unknown.
- Why does it appear at startup? A startup app, Run value, scheduled task, service or leftover reference is calling it. Inspect those mechanisms rather than repeatedly deleting the file.
- Will a clean Defender scan prove it is safe? It lowers the likelihood of a currently recognized threat but does not identify an unknown program or guarantee that a newly released threat is recognized.
- What information should I provide to a vendor? Supply the full path, SHA-256 hash, file size and timestamps, signature and signer, parent process, command line, startup mechanism and exact error text.
