What Is DPI? 72 vs 300 vs 600 DPI Explained

DPI describes printer dots, while PPI relates image pixels to print size. Here’s when 72, 300 and 600 matter for screens, prints and scans.

DPI means dots per inch, but when you choose an image’s print resolution, the setting usually refers to PPI: pixels per inch. The distinction matters because 72, 300 and 600 describe different things depending on whether you’re preparing an image for print or setting up a scan. For most photo prints, 300 PPI is a useful target; 600 sampling can help capture fine detail in some scans; and 72 PPI is not a universal screen-resolution rule.

What DPI means—and how it differs from PPI

DPI (dots per inch) describes how many ink or toner dots a printer places in an inch. PPI (pixels per inch) describes how densely image pixels are assigned to a physical print size. The terms are often used interchangeably in consumer software, so check whether a setting controls the image’s print dimensions, the scanner’s sampling, or the printer’s output. Adobe explains the distinction between image resolution and printer output resolution.

A digital image’s pixel dimensions determine how much image data it contains. Its PPI value, together with the chosen print size, determines how densely that data is placed on paper. Changing a resolution number alone does not create additional detail.

72 vs. 300 vs. 600: what the numbers tell you

The table compares common shorthand across print and scanning contexts. A scanner’s dpi setting is its sampling rate; it is not the same measurement as a printer’s output dots or an image’s PPI.

Value What it means in context When it can make sense Important caveat
72 PPI A relatively low pixel density when an image is assigned a particular physical print size. It may appear as default image metadata. Small web graphics can display at many sizes. It does not mean screens render every image at 72 pixels per inch. Pixel dimensions and display size chiefly determine on-screen appearance. The Library of Congress discusses image detail in terms of pixel samples and PPI.
300 PPI A common target for high-quality prints viewed at normal distances. Photo and document prints, and as a starting point for ordinary document scans. It is a useful standard, not a universal requirement. Print size and viewing distance matter. Adobe describes 300 PPI as a standard for high-quality printing and notes that lower resolutions may suit large-format prints viewed from farther away.
600 dpi sampling or 600 PPI Twice the samples per inch on each axis compared with 300; four times as many pixels over the same area. Scanning fine text, line art or black-and-white documents when the source and scanner can capture the detail. It can increase file size and processing time without visible improvement if the source detail is already captured. Upsampling cannot restore missing detail. Library of Congress scanning experiments explain the pixel-count increase and its limits.

What DPI or PPI should you use for printing?

For a photo or document printed at an ordinary close viewing distance, 300 PPI is a practical target. Adobe calls 300 PPI the standard for high-quality printing, while explaining that lower resolution can still work for larger prints viewed from farther away. Adobe’s Photoshop printing guidance notes that the 300 PPI target provides sharp detail at normal viewing distances.

Calculate the print size by dividing each pixel dimension by the intended PPI. For example, a 3000 × 4500-pixel image at 300 PPI corresponds to a 10 × 15-inch print before resampling. At 150 PPI, those same pixels correspond to a 20 × 30-inch print, with less pixel density. These are calculations, not guarantees of perceived quality: the original image’s detail and viewing distance also matter.

Calibrite Display 123 Monitor Calibration Colorimeter for Photo Editing and Color Accurate Viewing, Easy 1 2 3 Software Workflow, USB C Connection, and Before and After Check, Supports 2 Displays
  • SPECIFICATIONS: Monitor calibration colorimeter with Easy 1 2 3 software workflow, USB C connection, compact body approx. 34mm tall x 37mm diameter, adjustable counterweight for screen placement, supports up to 2 displays, brightness target selection including Native or Photo with before and after check.
  • EASY SETUP: Guided 1 2 3 workflow makes calibration fast and approachable, helping photographers and creators achieve more accurate color without complicated settings, so you can edit with confidence and trust what you see on screen.
  • COLOR ACCURACY: Corrects common monitor color shifts to deliver truer tones and more reliable contrast, improving consistency across editing sessions and helping your images look closer to final output on other screens and devices.
  • DUAL DISPLAY SUPPORT: Calibrates up to 2 monitors for matching color across a multi screen workspace, ideal for photo editing, video work, and creative setups where consistent viewing on both displays matters.
  • BEFORE AFTER CHECK: Built in comparison view lets you instantly see the difference after calibration, making it easy to confirm improved accuracy and maintain consistent results by repeating the process on a regular schedule.

If you change print dimensions without resampling, you change the implied PPI but not the number of pixels. If resampling is enabled, editing software adds or discards pixel values; interpolation does not recover details absent from the original.

When should you scan at 300 or 600 dpi?

Use the setting that fits the source, the purpose of the scan and the scanner’s actual optical capability. For ordinary documents, 300 dpi is often a sensible starting point. Adobe Acrobat’s scanned-PDF guidance recommends 300 dpi for grayscale or color documents and 600 dpi for black-and-white documents. These are workflow recommendations, not universal standards. See Adobe’s guidance for improving scanned PDFs.

For equal-size scans, moving from 300 to 600 samples per inch doubles pixel dimensions in both directions, resulting in four times the pixel count. That can mean larger files and slower handling. It is useful when the higher sampling captures small type, fine marks or detail needed for later enlargement; it is less useful when the original or scanner cannot supply more detail. The Library of Congress notes that doubling spatial resolution may not produce a visible quality improvement when spatial and tonal detail are already sufficient. Read its scanning and compression experiments.

A 1997 Library of Congress FEDLINK technical note described 300–600 dpi as a typical range for library scanning projects, with 300 dpi as a minimum for OCR and 600 dpi recommended for small, italic or old-fashioned type. This is historical technical guidance, not a current scanner-buying specification. Consult the Library of Congress technical notes.

Choose a scan setting by checking these factors

  • Source detail: Small type, italic lettering, line art and damaged originals may benefit from higher sampling if that detail remains present.
  • Purpose: OCR, everyday viewing, archival preservation and future enlargement can call for different trade-offs.
  • Scanner capability: Check whether the stated maximum is optical or interpolated; a higher interpolated number does not establish that the scanner can capture finer detail.
  • File handling: Higher sampling increases pixel count and can increase storage needs and processing time.
  • Color mode: Adobe’s 300 dpi grayscale/color and 600 dpi black-and-white recommendations are specific to its scanned-PDF workflow.

Does 72 DPI affect how an image looks on a screen?

No universal 72 PPI setting determines screen quality. The number in image metadata affects the physical size implied when the image is printed; it does not limit how many pixels a screen can display. For screen presentation, the image’s pixel dimensions and the size at which it is shown are the relevant considerations. A small web image can be displayed at different sizes regardless of a 72 PPI metadata value.
