Atlas is no longer the current product to look for: OpenAI said it was scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026, as browser-based agentic capabilities move into ChatGPT and Codex. Which ChatGPT browser experience should you use?
“ChatGPT Browser” is often used informally, but current browser-related work can involve three distinct mechanisms. OpenAI’s documentation describes the desktop app’s built-in browser, website-provided site tools, and ChatGPT Work’s cloud browser. Their behavior is different, and none guarantees that every website or task can be automated.

OpenAI describes site tools as letting ChatGPT work directly with websites open in the desktop app’s built-in browser, while its cloud browser documentation describes a separate computer in the cloud. These are different paths: use the visible desktop experience when you want to follow the page, and cloud browser when a supported delegated task is appropriate. Exact availability depends on your plan, region, device, browser, workspace settings, and the website.
9 ways ChatGPT browser tools can help
1. Research a topic across websites
Ask ChatGPT to gather information from public websites and compare what the sources say. A useful request specifies the question, the kind of sources you trust, and the points to compare—for example, “Compare the installation requirements on these three official documentation pages and list any conflicts.” OpenAI has described research across public websites and connected sources, but the sources and tools available in a current session determine what it can actually reach. 2. Explain or summarize the page you are reading
With a page open in the built-in browser, ask for a plain-language summary, an explanation of unfamiliar terms, or a list of the page’s main claims. You can narrow the request—“Summarize the eligibility requirements and note any exceptions”—so the result is more useful than a generic recap. Check important details against the page itself, especially when the page is long or consequential. OpenAI’s site-tools documentation describes work on the current webpage and its state.
3. Fill in supported web forms
On supported sites, a browser task may enter information into fields and proceed through form steps. Give it the information to use and specify any fields it must leave blank; then review the entries before submission. Sign-in, verification, or unsupported site behavior may require you to take over, and not every form or transaction is available for automation. 4. Update a document or notebook
If a page exposes compatible site tools, ChatGPT may be able to edit a document, shared whiteboard, or notebook. Describe the specific change—such as adding a section, reorganizing notes, or revising a draft—and inspect the edited content before relying on it. The presence of a webpage alone does not mean it exposes tools for editing. OpenAI Help Center lists document, whiteboard, and notebook editing as site-tool examples.

Ask ChatGPT to inspect a supported dashboard, identify the figures relevant to a question, and organize the findings into a report. OpenAI’s earlier agent launch also described turning dashboard information into editable presentations and updating spreadsheets while retaining formatting; those are announced examples, not a promise that every current account or dashboard can do them. Verify values, date ranges, labels, and any calculations in the original dashboard before sharing a report. 6. Plan a trip and compare options
For travel planning, ask ChatGPT to compare available options against constraints such as dates, departure point, budget, and preferred pace, then turn the shortlist into an itinerary. OpenAI’s site-tool examples include building itineraries and comparing options; its 2025 agent announcement also described planning and booking travel itineraries. Availability of live options and the ability to book depend on the site and session. 7. Build a grocery cart from a recipe or meal plan
Where supported, ChatGPT may help turn a recipe or meal plan into a shopping cart. First ask it to extract ingredients and quantities; then check substitutions, serving sizes, and pantry items before asking it to add products. OpenAI has described updating a shopping cart as a site-tool use and gave adding recipe ingredients to a grocery cart as an Atlas example. Atlas was scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026, so that announcement is an illustration of the workflow, not evidence that Atlas remains available. 8. Arrange meetings or appointments
A supported browser or connected service may help find appointment options or rearrange meetings. OpenAI’s 2025 agent announcement described finding specialists, scheduling appointments, and moving meetings, but current support depends on available connectors, website behavior, and approvals. 9. Turn online research into a brief or spreadsheet
ChatGPT can help gather information from supported sources and organize it into a team brief or spreadsheet-ready structure. OpenAI’s agent announcement described competitor research compiled into a team brief and spreadsheet updates with financial data. Treat those as announced examples: current tools determine which sites and files can be read or changed. How to use browser automation carefully
- Choose the right mode. Use the visible built-in browser when you want to follow the page in the desktop app; use cloud browser for a supported delegated task in ChatGPT Work; use site tools only when the current website exposes them.
- Give a bounded task. Specify the page or goal, relevant constraints, and what should not be changed. Ask for a draft or comparison before asking for an irreversible action.
- Check the active account and session. Sign in through the browser’s sign-in interface and verify that the displayed website and account are the intended ones. - Review before consequential actions. OpenAI says site tools require website access and confirmation for sensitive activities such as purchases, deleting data, changing permissions, sending messages, or sharing personal details. - Verify the result on the original site. Check saved changes, submitted fields, dates, totals, and source material. A task that appears complete in a response is not a substitute for confirming the site’s actual state.
What can stop a browser task?
- The site does not expose the needed capability. Site tools are available only when the website provides a compatible tool for the requested action.
- The page or sign-in flow blocks automation. Some sites, verification steps, or transactions may not be supported; manual takeover may be needed.
- The wrong session is open. Check the active account, especially in cloud browser, which uses its own session rather than inheriting your local browser’s sign-ins.
- The action needs confirmation. Sensitive activities require approval, and some steps may need you to complete them directly.
OpenAI’s documentation does not establish that every workflow is available to every user or on every site. Check the current in-product options and relevant help pages for your account and region.
