It is tied to your Apple Account, and you choose which features to use. It is not simply one online folder or a synonym for an iPhone backup.
What is iCloud?
iCloud securely stores selected personal information and keeps it current across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Depending on the device, operating system, and region, its features can work across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Windows devices, and iCloud.com. Apple describes it as a way to store “photos, videos, documents, backups, and more” and keep them updated across devices automatically (Apple’s iPhone iCloud guide).
Think of iCloud as a collection of separate jobs rather than one switch: some features sync information, others store and share content, and iCloud Backup helps prepare a device for restoration. Turning on one does not automatically mean you have enabled all the others.
How do I set up iCloud on my iPhone?
- Open Settings. Tap your name at the top. If you are not signed in, choose Apple Account and sign in.
- Open iCloud settings. Tap iCloud, then See All to review the apps and features that can use it. Labels may differ by iOS version.
- Choose what to use. Turn on the features whose information you want available on other signed-in devices. For example, turn on iCloud Drive to access its files from supported devices and the web.
- Check storage and backup separately. Review the storage meter and the iCloud Backup setting. You can change which iCloud features are enabled for each device as your needs change.
- Repeat on other devices. Sign in with the same Apple Account and select the features you want there. For current instructions if a screen differs, use Apple’s iPhone setup guide.
You do not need to turn on every option. Start with the information you want kept current or available elsewhere, then check whether your storage allowance meets that need.

What can use iCloud?
Available apps and features vary by platform, region, and system requirements. Common examples include:
- Photos: iCloud Photos keeps your personal photo and video library available on supported devices and iCloud.com.
- Files: iCloud Drive stores files and folders for access and sharing on supported devices and the web.
- Passwords: iCloud Keychain and Passwords can sync passwords and passkeys across supported devices.
- Personal information: Messages, Contacts, Calendars, Notes, and Reminders can stay up to date across signed-in devices.
- Other services: Safari bookmarks and tabs, Find My, and data from compatible third-party apps may also use iCloud.
Check Apple’s current iCloud feature information for platform and regional availability. Most of these features use devices and software you already have; they are not separate physical products.
What is the difference between iCloud syncing and iCloud Backup?
Syncing keeps selected information consistent across devices. For example, with iCloud Photos enabled, an edit or deletion on one device is reflected in the synced library on your other devices. Syncing is convenient, but it is not an independent archive: an unwanted change can spread too.

iCloud Backup is intended to back up an iPhone or iPad so its owner can restore data after losing a device or moving to a replacement. Apple also supports backing up to a computer. These are different approaches: cloud backup is designed for a cloud-based backup and restoration workflow, while a computer backup gives you a computer-based copy. For the exact contents and current restoration steps, check Apple’s iCloud Backup overview and device restore instructions. Do not assume every kind of content is included without checking Apple’s current backup details.
Why is my iCloud storage full?
Apple lists 5 GB of free iCloud storage. The allowance is used by iCloud data and backups, so photos, files, and device backup data can all contribute. Check the storage meter in Settings under your name and iCloud to see what is using space; exact labels may vary by iOS version.

If the free allowance is not enough, iCloud+ is Apple’s paid upgrade. Apple lists plans with storage capacity up to 12 TB; available capacities and prices depend on region and can change. iCloud+ also includes optional features such as Private Relay, Hide My Email, custom email domains, and HomeKit Secure Video support, subject to regional and system availability. Review Apple’s iCloud+ overview for current local details.
Family Sharing can let configured family members share an iCloud+ plan and eligible premium features without making their personal files visible to one another. Apple’s UK Family Sharing guide lists shared plan capacities of 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB, and 12 TB; those are listed capacities, not a recommendation for a particular household. See Apple’s Family Sharing instructions and check the options offered in your region.
How does iCloud photo sharing work?
Three photo features serve different purposes:
- iCloud Photos syncs your personal library across your devices. Changes, including deletions, are reflected across that library.
- Shared Albums let you share selected photos and videos with others. Apple says Shared Albums do not count against iCloud storage.
- iCloud Shared Photo Library supports a collaborative library. Its media counts toward the iCloud storage of the person who created the library.
For current feature behavior and availability, consult Apple’s Photos guidance. Do not treat a shared library or album as a separate copy of your personal library.

How do iCloud security and recovery work?
Apple says standard data protection is the default. Data is encrypted, and Apple holds keys for most categories in its data centers so it can assist with data and account recovery. Under standard protection, certain categories—including Health data and iCloud Keychain passwords—are end-to-end encrypted. Apple lists 14 end-to-end encrypted data categories under standard protection.
Advanced Data Protection is an optional setting that extends end-to-end encryption to more categories, including iCloud Backup, Photos, and Notes. Apple lists 23 end-to-end encrypted categories with this option; for the majority of data covered, trusted devices retain the keys. The added protection changes recovery: if you lose required access, Apple may not be able to recover protected data for you. Read Apple’s current iCloud data security guide and its setup and recovery instructions before deciding whether to enable it.
How does iCloud sharing and family use work?
When sharing a file or other supported content, the owner chooses who can access it and whether they can view or make changes. Access can be changed later. People with access to collaborative files and items see the current version, rather than an isolated copy. Apple’s sharing options include files, calendars, notes, reminders, and photos; see Apple’s iCloud sharing guide.
