DNS over HTTPS (DoH) sends DNS queries and responses over an encrypted HTTPS connection between a device or app and a chosen DNS resolver. It makes those exchanges harder for people on the network path to read or alter, but the resolver still sees the questions it handles. DoH encrypts DNS transport; it does not make browsing anonymous or act as a VPN.
What DNS over HTTPS means
DNS—the Domain Name System—helps a device find the network address associated with a domain name. DoH changes how a DNS query travels to a resolver: instead of sending it through traditional unencrypted DNS transport, the client carries it in an HTTPS exchange. The DNS task remains the same; the transport is different.

The IETF standard defines a DNS query and its response as an HTTP exchange. The client uses a configured DoH server, which performs the resolver role. The standard does not define how the client discovers or chooses that server; the endpoint is configured separately by a user, software, or network administrator. RFC 8484
How a DoH request works
- The client selects an endpoint. A device, browser, or app must be configured with a DoH resolver address. That choice is outside the DoH protocol itself.
- The client sends a DNS query over HTTPS. RFC 8484 specifies two HTTP methods: GET encodes the DNS message using base64url in a
dnsquery parameter; POST carries the message in the request body with theapplication/dns-messagemedia type. - The resolver answers through the HTTPS exchange. The resolver processes the query and returns a DNS response to the client.
For example, Google Public DNS documents https://dns.google/dns-query as an RFC 8484 endpoint that supports GET and POST. Its separate JSON API at https://dns.google/resolve supports GET only; it is not the same endpoint or wire format as the RFC 8484 DNS-message interface. Google Public DNS DoH documentation

GET requests may be cached more effectively, while POST requests are less cacheable. Google notes that reduced caching can be desirable for privacy-sensitive applications or browser modes. This is provider guidance, not a guarantee that one method will be faster or more private in every setup; results depend on the client, resolver, network, and caching behavior. What DoH protects—and what it does not
HTTPS encrypts the connection between the client and its selected resolver and authenticates the server. This helps prevent passive observers on that network path from reading DNS exchanges and makes some attempts to alter or redirect those exchanges harder. DoH commonly uses HTTPS on port 443, and its traffic can share connections with other HTTPS traffic, which can make it less obvious to simple on-path devices. RFC 8484; Cloudflare DoH documentation

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
The resolver is the important boundary: it receives and processes the DNS queries. DoH therefore does not hide those questions from the resolver, guarantee anonymity, encrypt all app traffic, or prevent every form of tracking. HTTP-layer identifiers and request patterns can also create correlation risks, as RFC 8484 discusses in its privacy considerations. RFC 8484

| Technology | What it does | What it does not do by itself |
|---|---|---|
| DoH | Carries DNS queries and responses over HTTPS, encrypting the client-to-resolver connection. | It does not conceal queries from the resolver or route all internet traffic through a tunnel. |
| DNS over TLS (DoT) | Encrypts DNS transport using TLS rather than carrying DNS inside HTTPS. | It does not make the resolver unable to see the queries it handles. |
| DNSSEC | Helps validate the authenticity of DNS data. | It does not encrypt the connection carrying DNS queries. |
| Oblivious DNS over HTTPS (ODoH) | Uses a proxy-based design intended to keep any single server from knowing both the client’s IP address and the contents of its DNS queries. | It is a distinct protocol design, not a privacy feature automatically provided by ordinary DoH. |
| VPN | A VPN can route internet traffic through a tunnel, depending on its configuration. | DoH alone does not provide a VPN tunnel or encrypt all application traffic. |
DoH and DNSSEC solve different problems and can be used together: DoH protects DNS transport, while DNSSEC validation helps establish the authenticity of DNS data. The IETF describes encrypted DNS transport and DNSSEC as independent and compatible. RFC 8932

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
ODoH is described in an IETF Experimental RFC. Its proxying design separates the client’s IP address from the DNS query contents so that no single server is intended to learn both. That is a separate arrangement with different requirements, not a property to assume when using ordinary DoH. RFC 9230

Resolver examples and protocol features are not performance rankings. Without current, comparable measurements, there is no basis here to name a universally fastest or best resolver. For managed filtering, Cloudflare Gateway illustrates why endpoint choice can matter: its documentation says a browser’s DoH must point to a Gateway DNS location endpoint for the browser’s DNS filtering policies to apply. That is a specific managed-service configuration, not a feature built into DoH itself. Cloudflare DoH documentation
