How to Find Internet Clients and Monitor CMG Traffic in Configuration Manager

Configuration Manager gives you several ways to identify clients using internet-based management and to monitor Cloud Management Gateway (CMG) activity—but they answer different questions. Client location and SQL status views can identify internet clients; CMG console telemetry and logs show service activity. None of the documented SQL fields alone proves that a particular device used the CMG at a specific time.

What “connected via CMG” can—and cannot—mean

Configuration Manager clients determine whether they are on the intranet or the internet based on reachability. When a client can contact a domain controller or an on-premises management point, it reports Currently intranet. If it cannot contact either, it switches to Currently Internet and uses the CMG service location. Microsoft describes this behavior in its client configuration guidance.

That state is useful for finding internet clients, but it is not a record of a specific request passing through the CMG. Likewise, a client’s knowledge of an internet management-point candidate does not establish when or whether it used that endpoint. Keep these distinctions clear in report names, labels, and conclusions.

Microsoft notes that clients view the CMG as an internet-based management point even though the CMG is not technically an internet-based management point. Treat a returned result as evidence of a client-known internet candidate—not as a historical connection log or proof of a particular CMG transaction. See Microsoft’s guidance on configuring clients for CMG.

Build a custom report from Configuration Manager SQL views

For a report about internet status and general client status, use documented Configuration Manager views rather than presenting those fields as a definitive CMG-session history.

View Useful information What it does not establish
v_ActiveClients Whether a client is on the Internet, as documented in Microsoft’s client status views. A specific client’s CMG session or the time of a CMG transaction.
v_CH_ClientSummary Client status details such as last-reported-online time and last management point contacted, documented in the same client status views. Proof that the last contact used the CMG unless supported by separate CMG-specific evidence.
v_R_System System identity and discovery fields that can be joined to other system-related views by ResourceID, as described in Microsoft’s discovery views documentation. CMG connection history.

For joins between client-status data and system identity, use ResourceID where appropriate; Microsoft documents it as the common join key for these views. The client status view documentation describes the status views, while the discovery view documentation describes identity fields.

Before deploying a report, validate the available columns against the Configuration Manager version and schema at your site. Inventory and view schemas can vary; Microsoft’s hardware inventory views documentation describes inventory views, but it does not turn those views into a universal CMG-session record.

Choose labels that match the evidence

  • Use Internet client or Internet status for the documented internet indicator.
  • If you use the client WMI result, label it as a client-known internet management-point candidate.
  • Reserve observed CMG traffic for CMG-specific console telemetry or logs.

Monitor CMG traffic in the Configuration Manager console

To view service-level traffic, open Administration > Cloud Services > Cloud Management Gateway, select the CMG, and review the traffic information in the details pane. Microsoft says the console displays requests to the CMG connection point and connected site system roles, including policy, location, registration, content, inventory, and client-notification requests. These are service activity categories, not a documented per-device custom report. See Monitor the CMG.

Microsoft also notes that clients connected through the CMG appear in the Configuration Manager console the same way on-premises clients do. That console appearance does not, by itself, identify a client’s CMG session. The same monitoring guidance describes the service-level view.

Use logs to investigate service activity

For deployment details, ongoing service status, and usage data, inspect CloudMgr.log. For client-traffic troubleshooting, Microsoft points administrators to CMGService.log and SMS_Cloud_ProxyConnector.log in its CMG monitoring guidance.

The CMG connection point maintains HTTPS/TCP connections to CMG instances and reports traffic per endpoint every five minutes, according to Microsoft’s security and privacy guidance. This cadence supports service-level monitoring and trend analysis; it is not evidence of a universal per-device historical session field in the SQL views above.
