In tabletop gaming, it means more than adding an access tool: disabled people belong as players, creators, organizers and decision-makers, and groups should work with them to make participation possible on their own terms.
What is Disability Pride?
Disability Pride can mean recognizing disability as part of one’s identity, connecting with disabled community and culture, and claiming the right to be visible and included. The American Bar Association describes it as embracing disability as integral to identity and rejecting shame and internalized ableism. People may also associate it with authenticity, advocacy, shared history or the freedom to participate without having their membership questioned.

There is no single required way to feel or express it. Some disabled people identify strongly with disability culture; others may not use that framing, want public visibility or feel pride about their disability. A disability can involve medical experiences and challenges while also being part of identity and community. Those understandings are not mutually exclusive. Kathleen Bogart, PhD, writing for the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, cautions that pride does not mean everything is perfect or that real challenges disappear; many difficulties are intensified by ableism and barriers.

The University of California, San Francisco Disability Resource Center describes disability culture in terms of group identity, shared history, resilience and creative expression. In an ABA interview, disability rights advocate Haben Girma put one practical dimension of pride this way: “Disability Pride embraces a culture where we can all receive the supports we need to share our talents with the world.”

When is Disability Pride Month?
In the United States, Disability Pride Month is observed in July in connection with the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed on July 26, 1990. The ABA reports that Boston held the first Disability Pride Day in 1990 and that July 2015, the ADA’s 25th anniversary, marked the first official Disability Pride Month celebration. These are U.S. milestones; observances and histories differ elsewhere.
The ABA lists “The World Works Better With Us” as its 2026 Disability Pride Month theme. It is the theme listed by that organization, not a universal theme for all events.

What does Disability Pride have to do with tabletop gaming?
Tabletop role-playing games and board games create opportunities to share stories, solve problems and spend time with other people. But being invited to a game is not the same as being able to participate comfortably. A room, game materials, communication style or session format can create barriers, and the right adjustment depends on the person and the activity.

Accessibility is not a single checklist that works for everyone. Ask what would help, listen to the answer and make a plan the group can sustain. Do not assume one tool or house rule will meet every need, or place the entire burden of educating and accommodating a group on a disabled player.

Examples of disabled-led work in tabletop gaming
DOTS RPG Project’s annual July Gaming 4 EveryBODY event celebrates Disability Pride in tabletop and video game communities while raising funds for work to improve tabletop role-playing accessibility. Its examples show how access can involve materials, description, programming and the design of a play space.
- Braille RPG dice: DOTS says it launched braille-only RPG dice in December 2024 after years of development and prototype testing with blind and low-vision people. The project describes them as the first factory-produced RPG dice sets with braille-only faces; that “first” claim is DOTS’s own. It says the dice are available through production partner Die Hard Dice. A particular tool’s usefulness depends on the player’s preference and the game.
- Detailed art descriptions: DOTS has worked on descriptive alt text for tabletop RPG art. Evocative illustrations may need specific descriptions rather than a brief generic label to convey what is shown.
- Convention programming: DOTS reports that it presented accessibility panels about video games and tabletop games at PAX East in May 2025.
- A disabled-led play space: DOTS says it debuted the Access Forward Gaming Lounge at PAX East in May 2025. The lounge was intended for disabled and nondisabled players with different accommodations.
These approaches are examples, not proof that one set of dice, one venue or one event makes gaming accessible to everyone. The broader point is that access involves people, materials and environments—and disabled people should help decide how those are designed.

How can a gaming group make participation more accessible?
Start with the person’s stated needs rather than assumptions about a diagnosis. A useful conversation is specific and low-pressure: ask what would make the session work better, offer options, and respect a person’s choice not to disclose more than they wish. Then agree on who will arrange each change and check whether it works in practice.
- Identify the barrier: Ask about the particular game or session, not what a person with a given disability “usually” needs.
- Consider options together: Depending on the barrier and the player’s preference, possibilities might involve accessible game materials, a different way to describe visual information, or changes to the play environment or session format. These are starting points for discussion, not a universal checklist.
- Make the arrangement reliable: Agree on practical details and responsibilities so the player is not left to solve every access issue alone.
- Adjust with consent: Ask whether the arrangement is working and make changes with the player, rather than treating an initial solution as final.
Access should support participation without requiring someone to disclose private information or educate the group without support. Disabled players can contribute to decisions, but organizers and other players share responsibility for making the game workable.
