Choose by comparing the actual price and condition of specific phones—not by assuming the newest model is automatically the better value. Last year’s flagship can be a smart buy if its discount is meaningful, its remaining software support fits your plans, and its battery and warranty check out. Paying more for a new phone makes sense when its particular upgrades matter to you or when a new device offers more certainty about battery condition and coverage.
Start with a like-for-like price comparison
Compare the same brand family and size tier, with the same storage capacity. Use the price you can actually pay in your region, not an old launch price: include trade-in requirements, carrier financing, and any conditions attached to a promotion. Prices and offers vary by retailer and location, so check current listings before deciding.

There is no universal discount percentage that makes last year’s flagship the right choice. The value depends on the exact models, local prices, ownership period, and which features you will use.

Compare the features that affect your day-to-day use: camera hardware and features, display size and refresh rate, battery life and charging, sustained performance, connectivity, and software features. Give extra weight to the differences you will notice; a specification advantage you never use may not justify a higher price.

The iPhone 16-to-17 comparison shows why it is important to check the exact generation rather than generalize. Apple’s current buyer guide describes the iPhone 16 models as having 60Hz displays and a 12MP ultrawide camera, while the iPhone 17 adds a 120Hz display and a 48MP ultrawide camera, along with improved battery life. Check how much software support remains
Look up the official support policy for the exact model. The stated period may start at launch or first availability, so buying an older phone later does not reset its support clock.

- Google Pixel: Google says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates, counted from the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. This policy applies to the covered Pixel models, not every Android phone. Check Google’s Pixel update policy.
- Samsung Galaxy S25: Samsung states that the S25 receives seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from global launch. Update timing may vary by model, network provider, and market. Details are on Samsung’s Galaxy S25 announcement.
- iPhone: Check Apple’s current compatibility information for the model rather than assuming a fixed future support period. For context, Apple’s iOS 17 compatibility list covered 24 iPhone models introduced since 2018; that dated example is not a guarantee of a set number of future support years. Account for battery, condition, and seller terms
“Last year’s flagship” can mean new-in-box, used, or certified-renewed, and each has different risks. Before buying, verify the battery condition where available, the return period, warranty coverage, activation or lock status, repair history, and seller reputation. A low price is less compelling if the phone has an uncertain battery or limited recourse after purchase.

Use Google’s Pixel battery guidance for those devices; do not assume the same measures or thresholds apply to other brands. If you are weighing a phone you already own, a battery replacement may be an alternative to replacing the whole device, subject to model-specific availability and cost.

Compare the cost over the time you will keep it
Think beyond the checkout price. Consider how long you expect to use the phone, how much security support will remain during that period, whether a battery repair is likely, and what it would cost you to miss a feature you care about. A prior-year model’s lower purchase price may be offset by repair expense or a shorter remaining support window; a new phone’s premium may be worthwhile if its upgrades solve a real need.
For either option, confirm compatibility with your carrier, region, and existing ecosystem. When the budget makes it relevant, include a current mid-range phone as a third option—but compare its features and total cost on the same terms rather than treating it as automatically inferior to an older flagship.
