Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) is a requirements specification for Linux platforms used in telecommunications and network equipment—not a separate Linux distribution. It describes capabilities intended to support telecom reliability, operations, performance, hardware and security needs. Vendors implement relevant capabilities in their own products and disclose how those products address the requirements.
What does “carrier grade” mean?
In this context, “carrier grade” describes capabilities sought in Linux-based platforms for telecommunications and network equipment. The Linux Foundation workgroup behind CGL brought together needs from carriers and network equipment providers, then used them to develop specifications for Linux distribution vendors. Its purpose was to identify telecom-oriented requirements and help address capability gaps in Linux platforms.

The label does not by itself establish that a particular Linux product meets every CGL requirement or is suitable for a given network. The specification says a single configuration cannot serve every use case and that not all features will be used together. It defines a requirement as a capability considered essential to a carrier-grade objective for which at least one active open-source implementation is available. The Linux Foundation’s 2011 announcement says the workgroup had been collaborating on CGL gaps and requirements since 2002.

CGL is a framework of requirements, not an operating system that users install. Linux vendors can implement relevant capabilities in their own distributions or products; historically, suppliers disclosed how their products addressed the specification. A telecom appliance or deployment may use a Linux distribution with selected CGL-related capabilities, but that does not make CGL itself the distribution or the appliance.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
The project described registration as self-administered. That historical process should not be confused with an independently verified certification, nor does the material reviewed establish whether registration is active today. The CGL project page describes the workgroup and its role.
What areas does the CGL 5.0 specification cover?
CGL 5.0 organizes requirements into seven areas. The specification’s categories span more than uptime: they also include maintenance, standards, hardware and security considerations. The CGL 5.0 specification describes the areas as follows:
Rank #2
- LINUX COMMANDS. ZERO SEARCHING. – Keep essential Linux and Unix command lines directly beneath your fingertips, so you can code, troubleshoot and work faster without breaking focus.
- YOUR DESK. SMARTER. – Commands are clearly grouped by networking, directory navigation, processes, users, files and system management for quick answers exactly when you need them.
- BUILT FOR EVERY LINUX USER – A practical go-to reference for beginners and seasoned programmers working with Kali, Red Hat, Ubuntu, openSUSE, Arch, Debian and other distributions.
- ROOM TO CODE, WORK & PLAY – The extended 31.5 x 11.8-inch Pixiecube desk mat provides ample space for a laptop or keyboard and mouse, while the soft 2 mm surface adds everyday comfort.
- BUILT FOR REAL-WORLD WORKDAYS – A rugged stitched edge helps prevent fraying, and the water-resistant, stain-resistant surface protects against scratches, spills and everyday wear—because smarter desks should work harder.
- Availability: single-node availability and recovery.
- Clustering: groups of systems, chiefly for high availability.
- Serviceability: maintenance and supporting tools.
- Performance: capabilities that include real-time requirements.
- Standards: APIs and other standards.
- Hardware: support for carrier-environment hardware.
- Security: features for securing systems.
Each requirement also has a disclosure priority. In CGL 5.0, P1 requirements were required for implementation and disclosure as part of registration; P2 requirements called for disclosure of whether and how they were implemented. These priorities describe that specification’s historical registration framework, not a guarantee about a product’s present-day status.

The Linux Foundation announced CGL 5.0 on 6 April 2011. Its announcement reported six registered compliant distributions at that time. That is a historical count, not a current tally. The sources available here do not establish whether CGL has a successor specification, whether registration remains active, or which vendors currently claim compliance.

The CGL 5.0 preface also says some requirements had been deprecated when they became ubiquitous at the time. That reflects the workgroup’s intent: identify telecom needs and encourage useful capabilities to become common in Linux distributions, rather than define an unchanging list of features.
The Foundation’s 2011 announcement quoted executive director Jim Zemlin calling CGL “a recognized industry standard” relied on by leading telecom companies. This is an attributed statement from that announcement, not independent evidence of current adoption or market status.

How should you assess a Linux platform for telecom use?
Do not rely on the phrase “carrier grade” alone. For a particular distribution, appliance or deployment, look for a specific vendor disclosure and evaluate it against the intended workload and operating environment. Useful comparison points include:
- Which CGL requirements the vendor says it implements, and whether it discloses implementation details for P1 and P2 items.
- Which hardware and architectures the product supports, especially the hardware required in the target network environment.
- How the product is maintained and supported, including arrangements for updates and operational assistance.
- Whether the selected capabilities fit the deployment; CGL itself cautions that not every feature is needed or used together.
The historical CGL materials do not provide a current vendor comparison or product recommendation. A buyer should verify present support, maintenance and compliance claims directly with the vendor rather than infer them from the CGL name.
