Windows 11’s built-in Sudo for Windows lets you run a single command as administrator from an ordinary, unelevated console. On Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, enable it in Settings > System > Advanced, then put sudo before a command. Windows asks you to verify the elevation through User Account Control (UAC).
Check Windows 11 compatibility and enable sudo
Sudo for Windows is supported on Windows 11 version 24H2 and later. To turn it on:

Run an elevated command
Open a console and add sudo at the start of the command that needs administrator permissions. For example:
sudo netstat -absudo notepad C:WindowsSystem32driversetchostssudo npm install -g package-namesudo diskpart
When you run the command, UAC asks you to verify that you want to continue. The command then runs with administrator-level permissions. Use sudo only for commands that need elevation; Microsoft recommends using elevated access judiciously and considering development environments or alternatives when working in system directories.

| Mode | What it does | Consideration |
|---|---|---|
forceNewWindow |
Opens the elevated command in a new window. This is the default. | Microsoft recommends retaining this mode unless you specifically need the elevated command in the current console. |
disableInput |
Runs in the current window but closes the input handle, so the elevated command cannot receive input from that console. | Provides some inline convenience while mitigating associated security risk. |
normal |
Runs in the current window and can receive input from the console. | The most convenient mode, but Microsoft advises using it only if you understand the security risks. |
In disableInput and normal, a malicious process may try to control the elevated process through the connection between the unelevated and elevated sudo processes. In normal, an unelevated process in the same console may send input to the elevated process or obtain information from its output. If you do not need inline behavior, leave the default forceNewWindow enabled.
For mode details and configuration syntax, see Microsoft’s Sudo for Windows documentation.

How Windows sudo differs from runas
Both can launch programs with elevated permissions, but they serve different purposes. Windows sudo elevates a command as the current user from an unelevated console and uses UAC verification. It does not currently run a program as a different user.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →runas can start a program as another user, including an administrator, and can prompt for that user’s password in the command line. Unlike runas, Windows sudo can attach the elevated command to the current console when using disableInput or normal.

What managed-device policy can control
On organization-managed devices, an administrator can disable Sudo for Windows or set the maximum mode users may select. Microsoft’s Sudo Policy CSP applies at device scope and lists Windows 11 version 24H2 (build 10.0.26100) and later for Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions, including IoT Enterprise LTSC.
The policy’s documented values are:
0: Disabled1: Force new window2: Disable input3: Inline (the CSP’s listed default)
If policy is disabled or not configured, users can use sudo normally after enabling it in Settings. Administrators can find its Group Policy mapping under Computer Configuration > System; the associated registry path is SoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsSudo, and the ADMX file is Sudo.admx. See Microsoft’s Sudo Policy CSP documentation.
