Capcom’s REX project is a staged evolution of its proprietary RE ENGINE—not a consumer AI product or a wholesale engine replacement. Capcom says it plans to add technology to the existing engine step by step, improving the development environment and making routine work, including testing and QA, more efficient. The AI ambition is about assisting development workflows; public information does not show that REX generates finished game content or that autonomous development is already deployed across Capcom titles.
What is REX, and how does it relate to RE ENGINE?
RE ENGINE is Capcom’s internal production platform for rendering, editing, playtesting and quality assurance. It also supports sharing assets and moving personnel between projects. Capcom says work on the original engine began in connection with Resident Evil 7, released in 2017. Its 2025 integrated report describes REX as the engine’s next generation, with new technology to be integrated gradually rather than through an outright replacement. Capcom’s Online Integrated Report 2025
That makes REX best understood as an ongoing engine and workflow initiative. It is not an announced game, a publicly available development tool, or a product consumers can buy. Capcom’s report also says the company seeks outside perspectives—including from professional engineers and students—to improve usability.
Why does Capcom say the development environment needs to change?
In its August 25, 2026 announcement for the RE:2026 conference, Capcom said projects have grown substantially in assets and code since the engine’s 2017 development environment. It identified slower asset retrieval, editor operations and script builds as factors that reduce iteration speed. Capcom also said RE ENGINE had more than 2,000 active users, increasing the demands on usability. Capcom’s RE:2026 announcement

What REX systems have been reported?
At RE:2026 on October 2, 2026, Capcom programmer Satoshi Ishida presented on REX. Gamebiz’s event report named five systems and described their intended roles. These are component-level details reported by a media outlet, not an independently audited specification or a full technical release from Capcom. Gamebiz’s report on the REX presentation
Rank #2
| System | Role described in the event report |
|---|---|
| RE:Dox | A common data-processing approach intended to make loading and editing data more efficient. |
| RE:UI | A framework for development-tool interfaces. The report describes separating visual presentation from state, limiting unnecessary redraws and enabling gradual integration into existing tools. |
| RE:Log | A logging and communications system. The report describes compact ID-based records, centralized log storage and a unified protocol. |
| RE:Flows | A visual way to author game behavior that the report says translates into a programming language and supports collaborative work. |
| RE:Runtime | A runtime approach described as translating programs into Capcom’s RE:C++ language and managing large numbers of instances in batches. |
The same report says standardized programming-language rules are intended to make systems easier for developers and AI to read. It describes future aims that include AI code assistance and automated test play. Those aims indicate the direction being discussed, but do not establish a release schedule, current deployment across games or measured results.
What does “AI-assisted game development” mean here?
Capcom’s FY2025 management Q&A frames generative AI as a way to improve routine-work efficiency so developers can spend more time on creative value. The company said it was incorporating generative AI into stages of development and making progress toward implementation in some areas, while noting that game development is complex and its efficiency impact would take time to quantify. This statement distinguishes workflow support from AI authoring finished game content. It describes the company’s policy at the time of that Q&A; it should not be stretched into a claim that AI has no creative role in any Capcom process or that all REX-related AI functionality is already in use.

Capcom’s 2025 integrated report says its R&D Foundational Technology Department has approximately 200 engineers, including around 160 responsible for engine development. That is a department-level figure, not a headcount for all RE ENGINE users or for REX alone. Capcom’s Online Integrated Report 2025

The public account establishes REX’s incremental direction, the development problems Capcom wants to address and examples of systems discussed at the conference. It does not establish when REX components will roll out, which games will adopt each one, or the scale of any studio-wide efficiency gains. Capcom itself said quantitative evidence of improved development efficiency would take time; the conference report does not provide an authoritative deployment roadmap.
