Antimony is used in metal alloys, lead-acid batteries, ammunition, and flame-retardant formulations, as well as in some glass, ceramics, rubber, and plastic products. The application depends on its chemical form: metallic antimony is used in alloys, while antimony trioxide is used mainly as an ingredient in flame-retardant formulations.
How antimony is used in metal products
Lead alloys and batteries
Antimony can harden lead and improve properties such as strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance. USGS describes its use in lead-acid storage batteries and other alloys. One example in a USGS professional paper is antimony alloyed with lead in batteries, including lead-antimony battery terminals. Battery designs and formulations vary, so this does not mean every modern lead-acid battery contains antimony.

Ammunition and other metal products
Antimonial lead and ammunition are also counted among metal-product uses in the U.S. Geological Survey’s 2026 estimate of U.S. antimony use. That classification describes U.S. use; it should not be read as a ranking of end uses worldwide.

Why antimony trioxide is used in flame-retardant formulations
Antimony trioxide is the most important antimony compound, according to the USGS, and is used primarily in flame-retardant formulations. It is incorporated into materials rather than serving as a standalone finished fireproofing product. USGS examples include safety equipment and household goods; its statistics page also identifies fabrics and seat covers.

A 2017 USGS professional paper by its authors broadly describes antimony’s leading use as a fire retardant in safety equipment and household goods such as mattresses. That framing is useful for understanding the application, but the report predates newer U.S. estimates and does not establish a current global market share.
Other uses in glass, ceramics, rubber, and plastics
USGS groups ceramics, glass, and rubber products among antimony’s nonmetal applications. Professional material also describes uses in plastics and heat stabilizers. The exact role varies with the antimony compound and the product; these are categories of materials and applications, not a claim that all products in those industries contain antimony.

What the latest U.S. use estimates show
The U.S. Geological Survey’s 2026 Mineral Commodity Summaries estimates how antimony consumed in the United States during 2025 was distributed among broad end-use categories:

These percentages describe estimated U.S. use in 2025, not worldwide demand. The USGS summary also estimates U.S. apparent consumption at 45,000 metric tons that year. Apparent consumption is a supply-accounting measure, not a count of finished products or a direct measure of how much antimony each application uses.

Where U.S. antimony supply comes from
The same 2026 USGS summary estimates that net imports supplied 91% of U.S. apparent consumption in 2025, while recycling supplied 12%. These are separate measures and should not be added together as though they were mutually exclusive shares of one total. Secondary production came from antimonial lead recovered from spent lead-acid batteries and was intended for the lead-acid battery industry.
The summary reports that one U.S. company began mining antimony in Montana in 2025. It also says primary metal and oxide were produced by one Montana company using imported feedstock. These details describe the U.S. supply situation reported for that period; they do not mean all antimony used in the country was mined domestically.

How to interpret antimony’s critical-mineral status
The USGS includes antimony in its 2025 critical-minerals material and describes its uses in lead-acid batteries and flame retardants. The designation concerns minerals considered essential to economic or national security, vulnerable to supply disruption, and important to manufacturing. It does not mean antimony is scarce everywhere, nor does it imply that every antimony application has equal strategic importance.

Production geography is also distinct from use. A USGS 2021 report estimated that China accounted for approximately 61% of world antimony production in 2018, Russia 20%, and Tajikistan 10%. Those are historical shares of global production for 2018, not current estimates and not a breakdown of where antimony was used.
