If you want two physical screens for Nintendo 3DS games, compare the AYN Thor and AYANEO Pocket DS first; if you would rather have a more general-purpose Android handheld, consider the single-screen Retroid Pocket 6 and accept the layout compromises. Anbernic announced the RG DDS on October 10, 2026, but its price, release date, regional availability, and real-world emulation performance were not confirmed in the announcement. Its hardware specifications alone do not establish how well it runs the 3DS library.
What the RG DDS promises—and what remains unknown
Anbernic describes the RG DDS as a clamshell handheld with two displays, physical controls, and a retractable stylus. Its October 10, 2026 announcement lists an approximately 4.7-inch upper IPS display at 1200 × 720 and an approximately 4-inch lower IPS display at 960 × 720, a Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 processor, active cooling with an internal fan, and a 6000mAh battery. It also lists two analog sticks, a D-pad, and ABXY buttons. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent tests of emulation speed or compatibility. Anbernic’s official announcement says, in a translation from Japanese, that each display scales its corresponding original 3DS screen to three times the pixels in each dimension while preserving its aspect ratio.

The announcement does not confirm a retail price, launch date, or regional availability. Until a purchase listing or other reliable availability information appears, it is not possible to make a direct value comparison with devices already for sale. Nor does the screen scaling claim establish how individual games will perform.
Which alternatives are worth considering?
The closest matches depend on whether you need two screens, want an all-purpose Android device, or mainly play DS games. The comparison guide cited below makes editorial judgments about device suitability; those judgments are not benchmarks conducted for this article. Check the specific model revision, current listing, and compatibility reports for your games before buying.

| Device | Layout and intended fit | What to know for 3DS use |
|---|---|---|
| AYN Thor | Dual-screen clamshell; the guide describes two AMOLED displays. | The guide calls it a strong DS/3DS option and lists a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Treat this as the guide’s assessment, not a guarantee of performance across games. Held Games’ 2026 comparison |
| AYANEO Pocket DS | Large-screen, dual-display device. | The guide presents it as a powerful option but characterizes it as heavy and expensive. Consider it if screen size and performance matter more than portability and price; verify current specifications and pricing. Held Games’ 2026 comparison |
| Retroid Pocket 6 | Single-screen Android handheld for broader use. | The guide says it handles DS and 3DS emulation, but a widescreen panel can make stacked DS screens small or leave black bars. It is not a two-screen substitute. Held Games’ 2026 comparison |
| Retroid Pocket Duo | Announced dual-screen option. | GamesRadar reported a $269 announcement price and a demo running 3DS games through Azahar, but did not establish a ship date. The report does not confirm current orderability. GamesRadar’s report |
| Retroid Pocket Duo Lite | Announced dual-screen option, positioned more toward DS play. | GamesRadar reported a $149 announcement price. The comparison guide calls its 3DS capability limited; that is an editorial assessment, not a benchmark here. Confirm whether it is currently available before considering it. GamesRadar’s report Held Games’ 2026 comparison |
| Anbernic RG DS | Less expensive, related dual-screen device; relevant especially for DS gaming. | The comparison guide warns that it is not powerful enough for reliable 3DS emulation, so it should not be treated as an equivalent 3DS-focused alternative. Anbernic’s listing confirms a physical console and describes bundled accessories, but does not establish RG DDS availability. Held Games’ 2026 comparison Anbernic RG DS listing |
Choose by screen layout, portability, and use
For two physical screens
Start with the AYN Thor or AYANEO Pocket DS if the clamshell, dual-screen layout is central to your 3DS use. The Pocket DS is described as larger, heavier, and more expensive, while the Thor is presented by the guide as a strong dual-screen choice. Those descriptions help frame the trade-off, but they do not establish game-by-game performance or current pricing.
For a broader Android handheld
The Retroid Pocket 6 makes more sense if you want a single-screen handheld for varied uses and can live without two physical displays. On a widescreen device, arranging both DS-style screens can leave black bars or reduce the usable size of each screen. Decide whether that compromise is acceptable for the games you play rather than treating generic 3DS capability as proof of a good dual-screen experience.

For DS-first play or a lower-cost adjacent option
The Anbernic RG DS may suit someone prioritizing Nintendo DS games and a physical dual-screen layout. The cited guide specifically cautions against relying on it for reliable 3DS emulation. The Retroid Pocket Duo Lite is also presented as chiefly a DS option, with limited 3DS capability according to that guide. Neither should be chosen as a dependable 3DS device on the basis of its two-screen design alone.

The Retroid Pocket Duo has a reported announcement price and demo footage, but that report did not establish a ship date. Treat it as an announced option unless a current listing confirms it can be ordered. The same caution applies to the Duo Lite and the RG DDS: announced product details or pricing do not prove current stock, regional shipping, or warranty terms.

How to make a safer buying decision
- Decide whether two physical screens are essential. If they are, focus on dual-screen clamshells. If not, a single-screen all-purpose handheld may suit you better.
- Check compatibility for your actual games. Look for current reports on the exact device revision and the titles you plan to play; a broad statement that a device supports 3DS emulation does not guarantee smooth or complete play.
- Confirm that the device is currently purchasable. Check a live retailer or official product listing for stock, regional availability, shipping, warranty, and the price you will actually pay.
- Weigh size against screen area. The Pocket DS is described as large and heavy; a widescreen single-display device makes a different compromise by squeezing or letterboxing two screens.
- Compare only verified current costs. The reported $269 and $149 figures for the Retroid Duo and Duo Lite were announcement prices, not confirmation of present retail prices or orderability.
What the available comparisons do not establish
The sources cited here do not provide a controlled, game-by-game performance test across the listed devices, a current verified price and stock check for each model, or confirmed RG DDS retail availability. The AYN Thor and AYANEO Pocket DS recommendations therefore reflect the comparison guide’s positioning, not a universal performance ranking. For emulation devices, compatibility can vary by game and software configuration; verify reports for the titles that matter to you before committing to a purchase.
