Choose a 360-degree camera if you want to capture the scene in every direction and select the framing later. That flexibility shifts work from aiming before you record to reviewing and reframing footage afterward.
What is the practical difference?
A 360 camera records a panoramic view around the camera, so you can choose a direction or crop when editing. A conventional action camera records a wide-angle view that you compose at capture. This matters most when the camera is mounted out of reach or the action may happen in an unpredictable direction.

Some 360 cameras also offer single-lens modes, so buying one does not necessarily mean every clip must be panoramic. Check the exact mode and output resolution: Insta360 lists single-lens video up to 4K60 for X5, while DJI lists single-lens modes up to 5K60 in Normal mode and 4K Boost Video up to 120 fps for Osmo 360. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Insta360 X5 specifications; DJI Osmo 360 specifications; DJI Osmo 360 support and FAQ.
Which type fits your shooting style?
| Consideration | 360-degree camera | Conventional action camera |
|---|---|---|
| Framing | Capture the surroundings and select the view later; useful when the camera is out of reach or action may come from any direction. | Aim and compose the intended wide-angle point of view before or during recording. |
| Editing | Reframing adds choices, but you need time and a compatible app or desktop workflow to review and shape clips. | More direct when you already know the angle; full-frame modes can still leave room for some cropping. |
| Resolution in the finished view | The panoramic image spreads its resolution across the scene. An extracted view uses only part of that capture, so a headline 360 resolution is not equivalent to the same resolution in a forward-facing clip. | More of the sensor’s available resolution is concentrated in the chosen direction. Compare the output modes and sample footage relevant to your use. |
| Lens exposure | Outward-facing fisheye lenses can be exposed to bumps and scratches. DJI advises protecting Osmo 360 lenses. | The forward-facing lens remains exposed, though lens-cover options vary by model. Verify the specific model’s protection and replacement details. |
| Water use | Check depth limits, housing guidance, and stitching behavior. DJI warns that refraction can cause distortion and stitching errors with Osmo 360 underwater. | Check the exact model’s depth rating and housing guidance. |
| Battery and storage | High-resolution panoramic recording can create substantial files. Check runtime conditions and card or storage requirements. | Check runtime and storage requirements, as well as whether the framing format suits your planned edits. |
These are workflow trade-offs, not a tested performance ranking. The cited manufacturer specifications do not establish which camera delivers better real-world image quality. If image quality is your deciding factor, compare sample clips in lighting and motion conditions like your own, including the audio you expect to record.

How do current example models compare?
The models below illustrate the two approaches; their specifications are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. The figures are not directly comparable unless the recording mode and test conditions match.
| Model and type | Video and stills | Water resistance | Battery and storage notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insta360 X5, 360 camera | Up to 8K30 360 video; 5.7K up to 60 fps; 4K up to 120 fps; 72 MP stills. Single-lens video up to 4K60. | Listed waterproof to 15 m. | Manufacturer lab figures: 93 minutes at 8K30; 115 minutes at 8K24 Endurance Mode; 135 minutes at 5.7K30; 208 minutes at 5.7K24 Endurance Mode. Requires a UHS-I V30-or-higher microSD card. Insta360 specifications. |
| DJI Osmo 360, 360 camera | Panoramic modes up to 8K50; single-lens modes include 5K60 in Normal mode and 4K Boost Video up to 120 fps. | DJI says the body can be used underwater to 10 m, but discourages body-only underwater shooting and warns about refraction-related distortion and stitching errors. | Manufacturer lab figures: up to 100 minutes at 8K30, up to 120 minutes with Endurance mode at 8K30, and up to 190 minutes at 6K24. DJI lists 128 GB built-in storage, with 105 GB available, expandable by microSD; runtime varies with the stated settings and conditions. DJI specifications; DJI support and FAQ. |
| GoPro HERO13 Black, conventional action camera | Up to 5.3K60 and 4K120; 8:7 full-frame capture; HyperSmooth 6.0 in-camera stabilization. | Listed waterproof to 10 m. | GoPro states more than 1.5 hours at 4K30 and 5.3K30 under the test setup described on its product page. GoPro product page. |
Runtime figures above come from each manufacturer and use different modes and test conditions; they are not a fair battery-life ranking. For example, compare a manufacturer’s figure only after checking its recording resolution, frame rate, stabilization, and other stated settings. The HERO13 Black page is a useful conventional-camera example, not evidence that it is the newest action camera in every market.

- 4K & 170° MAXVIEW - X4 can also be used as a wide-angle 4K action camera at a whopping 4K60fps, or get super wide views with the incredible 170° MaxView at 4K30fps.
- ULTRA STABLE FOOTAGE - FlowState Stabilization and 360° Horizon Lock deliver smooth, level shots, no matter how intense the action is.
What should you check before buying?
- Decide whether you will reframe. If you want to pick a view after recording, make sure you are willing to review clips and use the required app or desktop workflow. If you want to record and share a known angle with minimal selection, a conventional camera is the simpler fit.
- Check the final output, not just the headline resolution. For 360 footage, the view you export is a crop of the panoramic capture. Confirm that the specific mode can deliver the resolution and frame rate you need.
- Verify water guidance for the exact model. A depth rating does not guarantee that underwater footage will stitch cleanly. For Osmo 360, DJI specifically warns about refraction and discourages body-only underwater use.
- Confirm storage and accessories. X5 requires a UHS-I V30-or-higher microSD card; Osmo 360 has built-in storage expandable by microSD. Check compatibility for the chosen model’s card, mounts, and any housing you need.
- Protect the lenses. The outward-facing lenses on a 360 camera can be vulnerable to contact. DJI advises protecting Osmo 360 lenses; check model-specific protection options before choosing how you will mount or carry a camera.
Which should you buy?
Buy a conventional action camera when your shot is predictable, you want to aim directly at it, and straightforward clips matter more than choosing the frame later. Buy a 360 camera when you cannot reliably point the camera toward the action—or when capturing every direction and selecting a view afterward is worth the added editing step. If you are undecided, ask whether you would rather frame the shot before recording or make that decision in editing.
