What Is an SoC? Understanding the Chip Behind Embedded Devices

An SoC (system on a chip) puts a processor and the supporting functions a device needs onto one integrated circuit. Here is what those blocks are, how they connect, and how SoCs differ from microcontrollers and SoC FPGAs.

An SoC, or system on a chip, is a single integrated circuit that combines a processor with the supporting functions a device needs to work on its own. Those supporting functions can include memory interfaces, input/output, peripherals, and sometimes specialized accelerators. What goes on the chip depends on the product, so “SoC” describes a design approach rather than a fixed parts list.

A working definition

Microchip Technology’s glossary gives a useful description, though it is the company’s own wording rather than a formal industry standard:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

“An SoC is a computer system embedded into a single chip that integrates a processor, key peripherals/interfaces and system functions, so it can run firmware, and often an OS, and directly control real-world I/O without needing lots of companion chips.”

The practical point is the last clause. An SoC is meant to reduce the number of separate chips a device needs, so the processor, memory logic, and interfaces sit together on one piece of silicon. Source: Microchip Technology, “What is a System-on-Chip (SoC) FPGA?”

What an SoC puts on one chip

Arm lists CPUs, memory subsystems, I/O, peripherals, accelerators, and interconnect as the main building blocks of SoC development. Arm, “What is SoC Development?” A given device rarely needs all of them, and the mix is what separates one SoC from another.

Processing elements

The processor is the centre of most SoCs. It is a CPU that executes instructions, and it may be joined by other processing elements. A device can have one CPU or several, and the software it runs decides which cores matter.

Memory subsystems

Memory holds the instructions and data the processor works on. On an SoC this can mean on-chip memory, memory controllers, or interfaces to external memory, depending on the design. Which of these is present, and how much, is one of the first things to check when comparing devices.

I/O and peripherals

These blocks connect the chip to the rest of the device: sensors, displays, storage, network links, and other parts of the system. Their presence is what lets an SoC control real-world input and output directly rather than through external support chips.

Accelerators (optional)

A GPU, DSP, or AI accelerator is added when a device needs to handle a specific kind of work faster or more efficiently than the CPU would. Many SoCs have no accelerator at all, so treat it as an option rather than a defining feature.

Interconnect

The interconnect carries traffic between all these blocks. Without it, the processor, memory, and peripherals would be separate islands on the same die.

How the blocks communicate

Arm describes AMBA as a freely available, open standard family for connecting and managing the functional blocks inside an SoC. Arm, “AMBA” It is a widely cited example of how an interconnect can be specified, but it is not a requirement. Other SoC designs use their own proprietary or customised interconnects, so AMBA should be read as one example rather than a rule. Arm’s broader overview of system design is at Arm, “System Architecture Design”.

Keep SoC, CPU architecture, and microarchitecture apart

These three terms are often mixed together, but they describe different things.

SoC: a system-integration term

“SoC” describes how much of a system has been integrated onto one chip. It says nothing about which instruction set the processor uses.

CPU architecture: the rules software relies on

A CPU architecture defines the software-visible rules: the instructions, exception behaviour, and memory model that programs depend on. Two different chips can share an architecture and still differ in every other way. Arm, “Arm CPU Architecture” describes the term this way.

Microarchitecture: one implementation of those rules

Microarchitecture is how a particular processor meets its architectural contract. Pipeline depth, cache design, and similar choices all belong here. Two implementations of the same architecture can have very different speed and power characteristics.

SoC compared with a microcontroller

The two terms overlap in everyday use, and there is no universal line between them. The table below shows the usual emphasis of each category. These are tendencies, not strict specifications.

Term What it describes Typical emphasis
Microcontroller A chip category built around embedded control Integration of control functions, typically with modest processors and integrated memory
SoC A design approach that integrates a processor with system functions on one chip Often more powerful CPUs, larger integrated memory, multimedia accelerators, and connectivity, according to Arm’s FAQ on the subject
SoC FPGA An SoC that also includes programmable logic A processor for embedded software, combined with FPGA fabric for custom I/O, acceleration, and real-time interfaces

For a specific device, the more useful question is the workload: how much processing, memory, and connectivity the software needs, and how much real-time control it must handle. Those answers usually settle the category better than the label on the chip.

SoC FPGA: a specialised case

An SoC FPGA pairs a hardened processor subsystem with programmable logic. Microchip describes using the processor for embedded software and the FPGA fabric for custom interfaces, acceleration, and real-time functions. Microchip Technology, “What is a System-on-Chip (SoC) FPGA?” Most embedded devices do not need this kind of part, so it is worth understanding as a variant of the SoC idea rather than as the default.

Comparing two real SoCs

When you compare two SoCs, go through the same checklist for each so the differences are visible:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which processing elements and accelerators are integrated.
  • The memory subsystem and the external memory interfaces it supports.
  • The I/O, peripheral, and connectivity interfaces included.
  • The intended workload and the software environment the vendor supports.
  • Implementation trade-offs such as power, performance, and die area, where the vendor publishes reliable figures for that product.

Power and performance numbers are only comparable when they come from the same vendor, under the same test conditions, for the same product configuration. Be cautious with figures that lack those details.

Further reading and a hands-on path

Arm publishes Fundamentals of System-on-Chip Design, an introductory resource on the subject. Arm’s PDF of the book is hosted on its developer site.

If you want to experiment, an SoC FPGA development board is the natural category to look at, because it combines a processor with programmable logic. Microchip describes FPGA prototyping and validation as typical uses of these parts. Check current listings from the board vendor before buying, since availability and configurations change.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
