How to Set Up a Separate IoT Network at Home

Learn how to put smart-home devices on a separate IoT network using your router's guest or IoT features, test that they cannot reach your main network, and keep local control working.

To put smart-home devices on a separate IoT network, use your router’s guest network or dedicated IoT mode if it blocks access to your main network. If the router supports VLANs and inter-network firewall rules, you can build a more controlled segment instead. In either case, the goal is the same: IoT devices should not be able to reach the computers and phones you trust, and only the local control traffic your household actually needs should cross the boundary.

Why separate IoT devices from your main network

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommends keeping IoT devices with known security risks on a separate network segment from everyday computing devices. A segment boundary can help contain a threat that starts on a smart plug, camera, or sensor, so it does not spread to the laptop holding your banking session or the file server holding your family photos. NIST’s SP 1800-15 project documentation goes further, stating: “Home and small-business network owners should segment their networks where possible.”

Segmentation limits exposure. It does not make a network invulnerable, and it does not replace updating devices or removing ones you no longer use. Treat it as one layer in your home security, not the whole of it.

Check what your router can already do

Before changing anything, open your router’s manual or management app and look for any of these terms: “IoT network,” “guest network,” “guest Wi-Fi,” “VLAN,” “client isolation,” or a setting that controls access to the local network. Menu names and behavior differ by brand, model, and firmware, so the presence of a word on the list is only a starting point.

  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router

Three kinds of capability matter:

  • A guest network that blocks local access. CISA’s 2024 guidance on federal mobile workplace security notes that home network segmentation may be as simple as enabling a router’s guest Wi-Fi option. Confirm that guest clients cannot reach the main LAN; a guest network that merely uses a separate password is not enough.
  • A dedicated IoT mode. Some routers provide a dedicated IoT network with its own settings. Check whether it shares the main subnet by default (see the ASUS example below).
  • VLANs and firewall rules. Routers and firewalls that support VLANs can assign wireless and wired ports to a separate segment and control traffic between segments. This gives the most control, and the most room for mistakes.

NIST’s 2024 router profile describes security outcomes and requirements for consumer-grade routers. It is not a compatibility list, so it cannot tell you whether a specific model supports any of the features above.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Choose the simplest feature that enforces separation. If your router has a dedicated IoT network or a guest network that blocks access to the main LAN, use that. Only move to VLANs if the simpler options cannot give you the isolation you need. The exact steps depend on your router.
  2. Create a distinct network name and password. Use a name that makes the IoT network easy to recognize, and a password you do not use anywhere else. Keep a record of the credentials, because you will need them to enroll devices. The sources reviewed for this article do not prescribe a specific password length, so use a long, unique passphrase as a general practice.
  3. Connect the IoT devices to the new network. Reconnect each device, using its own app or setup process, and confirm it appears in the router’s connected-device list. For wired devices on a VLAN-capable router, assign the relevant switch ports to the IoT segment.
  4. Test isolation. From a phone or computer on the main network, try to reach an IoT device’s local address. The default you want is that IoT-to-main-LAN access is blocked. If that test succeeds, the separation is not working, and you should review the router’s isolation or firewall setting before relying on the segment.
  5. Add only the exceptions you need. If a phone, hub, or home-automation controller on the main network must control devices on the IoT segment, allow that specific path where your router and device ecosystem support it. Do not open the whole network to make one device work.
  6. Verify day-to-day use. Test enrollment, routine control, notifications, and firmware updates from the places your household actually uses them, including outside the home if you rely on remote access.
  7. Maintain the network. Install router firmware updates and IoT device updates, remove devices you no longer use, and review the router’s device list and rules periodically. NIST recommends ongoing updates and manufacturer support for IoT devices.

Example: ASUS router instructions (not universal)

ASUS’s support documentation describes an IoT network feature with two paths. In the web interface, sign in to the router and go to Guest Network Pro > IoT Network. In the ASUS Router app, go to Settings > Guest Network Pro > + > IoT Network. In both cases, enter the settings and select Apply.

TP-Link Deco S4 Mesh AC1900 WiFi System, Deco S4(3-Pack) | Up to 5,500 Sq.ft. Coverage, Replaces WiFi Router and Extender, Gigabit Ports, Works with Alexa
  • A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
  • Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
  • Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
  • Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.

The feature requires firmware 3.0.0.6.102_34312 or later. Beginning with firmware 3.0.0.6.102_35404, the menu name changes from “Guest Network Pro” to “Network,” so the path on newer firmware will differ from the one above. The option “Use same subnet as main network” is enabled by default, which ASUS describes as providing seamless connectivity. Disabling it creates a dedicated IoT network. ASUS states: “By isolating these devices on a separate network, the IoT Network enhances overall home security and makes it easier to adjust WiFi settings for the rest of the home.”

Choosing an approach

Approach Best fit What to verify
Guest Wi-Fi Your router offers a guest network that can block local-network access. Often the simplest option. Confirm guest clients cannot reach the main LAN, and that the local control you need still works.
Dedicated IoT network Your router has an IoT-specific mode, which may have its own subnet and settings. Check whether it shares the main subnet by default and whether you can switch to a dedicated subnet.
VLAN and firewall rules Your router or firewall supports multiple networks and explicit rules. Useful when some cross-network access must be tightly controlled. Confirm wireless and wired IoT devices are on the intended VLAN and that the inter-network policy blocks unwanted access.
Separate physical router Only if your current equipment cannot provide the separation you need and you are willing to maintain a second device. Not established by the sources reviewed here: whether a second consumer router is automatically isolated. Check its routing and firewall behavior in its documentation.

When comparing options, weigh actual isolation, whether local control or device discovery must cross the boundary, wired and wireless support, setup effort, and how well the vendor keeps devices and firmware updated. These are practical criteria drawn from NIST’s segmentation and device-management guidance; they are not a ranking of products.

Will my phone still control devices on the IoT network?

Possibly not, unless you configure it. Phones, hubs, and controllers often discover and talk to devices over local protocols. When the IoT segment is isolated, those discovery and control messages may be blocked. ASUS’s own distinction between a shared subnet for seamless connectivity and a dedicated IoT network reflects this trade-off.

The cited sources do not promise that every discovery protocol works across network segments. Test each device after moving it. If a device fails, the usual fixes are to allow the specific local path your router supports, to place the controller on the IoT network as well, or to accept that the device will be controlled only through its cloud app.

Limits and cautions

  • Do not cut off internet access for every IoT device. Some devices depend on vendor cloud services or updates. The sources reviewed support updating devices but do not list device-by-device access requirements, so check each device’s function before blocking its traffic.
  • Do not assume the network name proves isolation. A separately named Wi-Fi network can still share the main subnet. Verify with the isolation test in the setup steps.
  • Interface names change. Router menus and available options change with model and firmware. Use your manufacturer’s current documentation.
  • Advanced device-level controls are optional. NIST’s Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) approach can limit a supported device to the traffic its function needs, and the SP 1800-15 documentation describes it as permitting only the traffic required for the device’s intended function. It requires compatible devices and network components, so it is an advanced option rather than a prerequisite for a separate Wi-Fi network.

No authoritative statistic was identified that quantifies how much risk a household’s separate IoT network removes, so this article does not offer a figure for it.
