Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An RTMP server receives a live stream from an encoder such as OBS, then can make it available to viewers, forward it, record it, or convert it to another protocol. To try one locally, run a server that listens for RTMP, then point OBS at its address and stream path. That small test is not, by itself, a secure or scalable public deployment.
What an RTMP server does
RTMP (Real-Time Messaging Protocol) is commonly used to send a live video feed from an encoder to a server. The encoder publishes; the server receives the incoming stream. Depending on its software and configuration, the server can let other clients read the stream, forward it elsewhere, record or play it back, or convert it to another supported protocol.

MediaMTX describes its software as a live media server and proxy that can publish, read, proxy, record, and play back real-time audio and video. SRS also documents RTMP publishing and playback examples. These capabilities depend on the chosen server and its configuration; the term “RTMP server” does not imply that every installation provides all of them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIngest is not the same as viewer delivery
Receiving a contribution stream and delivering it to an audience are separate parts of a streaming design. RTMP may be appropriate for the encoder-to-server ingest link, while the server can distribute or convert the feed to a protocol better suited to viewers and their devices.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
SRS characterizes HLS as broadly supported for delivery, with several seconds of latency, and lists WebRTC, HTTP-FLV, and HTTP-TS as possible lower-latency delivery options. That is the SRS project’s qualitative guidance, not a universal benchmark. Choose based on encoder support, viewer and CDN compatibility, acceptable end-to-end delay, any need for transcoding or repackaging, and the complexity of exposing the service publicly. The documented sources do not establish a fair performance ranking among server products.

docker run --rm -it -p 1935:1935 ossrs/srs:5 ./objs/srs -c conf/rtmp.confThe mapping exposes the container’s RTMP port on the host. Keep the process running while you publish. This example does not configure a public TLS endpoint, publishing authentication, viewer access controls, capacity, or a firewall policy.

Understand the publish address
An RTMP URL has a scheme such as
rtmp://orrtmps://, a host and optional port, and an application/path. Depending on the server, the stream key may be part of the path or entered separately in the encoder. The exact arrangement is server-specific.SRS documents the example publish URL
rtmp://localhost/live/livestream. In it,localhostmeans the same machine on which the publishing client runs; it does not mean “the server” from the perspective of a different computer.Rank #3

Connect OBS
In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose a custom service, and enter the server URL and stream key/path arrangement required by your server. For the MediaMTX local example, the server field is
rtmp://localhost/mystreamand the separate stream-key field is left empty; the stream is available at/mystream. This is one server’s documented arrangement, not a universal RTMP format.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. For a remote publisher, replace
localhostwith the server’s reachable host name or IP address and use the port and path configured there. The network must allow the publisher to reach the listening service. Starting a local container does not make it safely or reliably accessible from the public internet. -
Publish and verify
Start streaming in OBS and check the server’s logs or configured read/playback path to confirm that it receives the stream. A successful OBS connection only confirms the ingest link; viewer playback may require a separate output protocol and a client that can read it.

When RTMPS matters
RTMPS is the encrypted form of the RTMP connection described in the MediaMTX and YouTube documentation. Use it when the ingest connection should be protected in transit and the server and encoder are configured for it. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and advises supplying the server URL when an encoder does not offer a preset.
MediaMTX’s OBS instructions give rtmps://localhost:1936/mystream as an example and require allowing RTMP encryption in server configuration. For that documented OBS arrangement, OBS expects a certificate signed by a publicly trusted certificate authority. A self-signed certificate is silently rejected unless a local certificate authority is configured and trusted on the OBS machine. Certificate handling and configuration labels can vary by software version, so consult the current documentation for the server and encoder you use.
Before exposing an RTMP server publicly
A public endpoint needs deliberate access and deployment decisions; the sample command above does not answer them. Decide who can publish, who can read, whether the server forwards the stream, and which ports must be reachable. For example, an ingest-only service should not unintentionally expose a read path to everyone.

MediaMTX documents internal, HTTP, and JWT authentication options, along with stream forwarding. Review the current documentation for the selected server and configure access controls, encryption, and network exposure for your use case. Also plan for expected concurrent publishers and viewers, bandwidth, monitoring, and recovery. The cited sources do not establish a universal firewall rule or production hardening recipe.
Choose a server and delivery path for the use case
- Protocol support: Confirm the ingest protocols your encoder can publish and the output protocols your viewers or CDN can consume.
- Routing and conversion: Check whether you need forwarding or protocol conversion; MediaMTX documents both kinds of capabilities.
- Access controls: Determine how publishers and readers authenticate and whether the server supports the required method.
- Recording and monitoring: Verify that recording, playback, logs, and operational visibility meet your needs.
- Deployment and load: Consider portability, public reachability, and expected concurrency. The documentation cited here does not provide comparative performance benchmarks.
For a repeatable test, SRS provides a concise Docker example. For a server that needs multiple protocol and routing features, examine MediaMTX’s documented capabilities. These are different starting points, not a performance comparison.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than operate an RTMP server, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
