To improve live-stream quality, first identify whether the problem is blurry video, buffering or dropped frames, rendering lag, encoding lag, or poor audio. Each points to a different fix. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your encoder and internet connection can sustain together, then test the setup with representative motion and audio before going live.
Diagnose the symptom before changing settings
Open OBS’s statistics while streaming or running a test, and match the symptom to the likely cause. Viewers may describe several different problems as “bad quality,” but a higher bitrate will not fix every one.

| What you see or hear | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Blurry or blocky video, but playback is smooth | Bitrate may be too low for the selected resolution and frame rate, or the encoder may be struggling with fast motion. |
| Buffering, disconnects, or increasing network dropped frames in OBS | Connection stability, sustainable bitrate, the route to the ingest server, VPN or security software, and network equipment. |
| Rendering lag | Whether the computer can render the scene reliably; reduce rendering load if needed. |
| Encoding lag | Whether the encoder can keep up; reassess output resolution or frame rate. |
| Clear picture but poor or missing sound | Audio source selection, levels, and the audio in a representative test. Picture settings alone will not diagnose an audio problem. |
OBS treats increasing network dropped frames as a connection issue, not automatic proof of an encoder fault. Its connection troubleshooting guide is a useful next step when that counter rises.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBalance bitrate, resolution, and frame rate
These settings work as a group. Higher resolution generally needs more bitrate to retain detail, while higher frame rates require the encoder to process more frames. The best combination depends on the streaming platform, codec, connection, and available encoding capacity—not on one universal bitrate preset.

For those looking to fine-tune image parameters or enhance sound quality, EMEETLINK software is available for advanced customization. Both simplicity and advanced needs can be met effortlessly.
- Choose the platform first. Check the current official recommendations for your destination and selected codec. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance provides recommendations by mode; Twitch has separate broadcasting guidelines.
- Pick a mode your connection can sustain. If you see network drops or disconnections, reduce bitrate to a stable level rather than pushing a higher-quality setting that the connection cannot maintain. Twitch likewise advises prioritizing a stable stream over settings that risk dropped frames.
- Set resolution and frame rate to fit. If the connection cannot sustain the bitrate required for your chosen resolution, lower the resolution. If encoding or rendering is overloaded, try lowering output resolution or frame rate and reassess.
- Change one relevant setting at a time. Run the same kind of test after each change so you can tell whether the adjustment addressed the actual symptom.
Do not treat a bitrate number found for another platform, codec, resolution, or frame rate as a universal target. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats and recommends reliable settings for the available internet connection; viewer options and platform behavior can differ.
Fix network dropped frames and disconnections
When OBS’s network dropped-frames count rises, check the connection path before changing encoder settings.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- Reduce an unsustainable bitrate. Start with the selected platform’s current guidance, then use a bitrate your connection can hold consistently. A stable stream is preferable to a higher setting that repeatedly drops frames.
- Test the local connection. If you are on Wi-Fi and suspect instability, try wired Ethernet as a troubleshooting comparison. It can help isolate a Wi-Fi problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Check interference and routing. Temporarily assess whether a VPN, security software, network equipment, or the route to the chosen ingest service is contributing to the issue. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. OBS offers “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion.” It can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but OBS cautions that it does not solve the underlying cause; the reduced bitrate can also make the picture less clear.
- Escalate persistent connection problems. If official OBS troubleshooting does not resolve them, OBS advises contacting your internet service provider.
Fix rendering or encoding overload
Rendering lag and encoding lag point to performance constraints rather than the same network problem that causes network dropped frames. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers performance diagnosis.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Try a lower output resolution if the system cannot process the current one reliably.
- Try a lower frame rate if the encoder or renderer cannot keep pace.
- Retest after each adjustment and compare the relevant OBS statistics.
- Keep the trade-off in mind: lowering resolution reduces detail, while lowering frame rate can make motion less smooth.
Do not assume that buying a new computer or graphics card is necessary: first establish that local rendering or encoding performance is the bottleneck.

Test the stream before the real broadcast
YouTube recommends a speed test and a practice stream with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. A static scene alone will not reveal how the setup handles fast gameplay, camera movement, or other motion-heavy content.
- Check the current encoder settings for your platform, codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Run a speed test, then do a practice stream rather than relying only on a speed-test result.
- Include representative movement and confirm that the intended audio is present and clear.
- Watch OBS statistics and the platform’s stream-health messages during the test.
- If a counter or health warning points to a problem, change the corresponding setting or investigate that connection or performance branch, then test again.
During a live YouTube stream, monitor its stream-health messages rather than assuming a stream that appears connected is delivering cleanly.

Account for platform differences
Before settling on a preset, check four things for the platform and stream mode you actually use:
- Ingest recommendations: Supported codec and recommended bitrate range vary by platform and mode.
- Available capacity: The connection and encoder must sustain the chosen resolution and frame rate together.
- Viewer quality options: YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats; do not assume another service handles viewer options the same way.
- Latency needs: The acceptable balance can depend on how quickly you need viewer interaction to reach you.
Both YouTube’s and Twitch’s official recommendations can change, so verify the current platform guidance before configuring an important broadcast. Twitch’s guidance also discusses bitrate and encoding capacity, including NVIDIA NVENC as a dedicated GPU encoder; that does not by itself establish that hardware encoding is the right choice for every setup.
