What Is an Instagram Broadcast Channel?

Instagram Broadcast Channels let creators share public updates with followers, who can react, vote in polls, and participate through replies and prompts.

An Instagram Broadcast Channel is a public, one-to-many messaging space where creators share updates with followers. It is built for creator-to-audience announcements and conversation—not as a private group chat. Followers can preview or join a channel; joining brings its updates into their Instagram channel experience, subject to channel and personal controls.

How do Instagram Broadcast Channels work?

Meta introduced Broadcast Channels in 2023 as a way for creators to communicate with followers at scale. In its February 16, 2023 announcement, Meta called them “a one-to-many messaging tool that allows creators to engage directly with their followers at scale.”

A creator posts messages to the channel, and people who join can see those updates. Meta’s original description included text, photos, video, voice notes and polls. The format is public and discoverable in Meta’s description, so it should not be treated as a private space for sensitive messages.

What can followers do in a channel?

At launch, Meta described followers as being able to react to messages and vote in polls. The feature later added ways to participate beyond those lightweight interactions.

Replies

Meta announced replies on December 4, 2024. Followers can respond to creator messages and to one another in nested threads; creators can enable replies through channel controls. Meta described the change as allowing “real, back-and-forth conversations on your broadcast channel.”

Prompts and insights

Prompts let creators ask questions or check in with followers. Meta also announced channel insights covering interactions, story shares and poll votes. These additions expanded the original format rather than changing its one-to-many foundation.

How is a Broadcast Channel different from a private chat?

Feature Broadcast Channel Private chat
Purpose Creator-to-audience updates for followers Personal messaging between participants
Visibility Public and discoverable in Meta’s description Private messaging experience
Participation Reactions, poll votes, and—where enabled—replies and prompt responses Conversation in the chat

A channel may support replies, but that does not make it private. Use private messaging when a conversation needs to be confidential or directed to specific people.

Do you have to join to see a channel?

Meta’s launch description said people could discover and view channel content, while followers who joined would receive updates. Joining is therefore the relevant step for having channel updates appear in the channel experience; notification behavior and controls can vary. Meta’s 2023 announcement also described options to mute or leave a channel and adjust notifications, but those are launch-era details, not a guarantee of today’s exact labels or defaults.

How popular are Instagram Broadcast Channels?

Meta said in its December 4, 2024 announcement, updated June 26, 2025, that creators and followers exchanged more than 1.5 billion messages per month on broadcast channels. That is Meta’s reported figure from the 2024 announcement, not an independently verified current measurement.

Who can create a channel?

The official announcements cited here do not establish current creator eligibility, regional availability or exact in-app setup steps. Those details can change, so check Instagram’s current in-app guidance rather than relying on a fixed follower threshold or assuming the feature is available to every account.
