That might mean a fixed terminal, shared kiosk, mobile clock, or a mix—not necessarily one device for everyone. U.S. federal law requires accurate time records but does not require employers to use a time clock.
What a factory time clock needs to record
A time clock records work-time punches, usually including start, stop, and meal or break events. In a factory, a useful timekeeping system must also account for the work patterns and payroll rules behind those punches. A punch alone does not resolve whether a meal was interrupted, whether a worker changed jobs, or whether overtime was approved.

Depending on the operation, the timecard may need to reflect overnight shifts, workweek boundaries, shift differentials or premiums, multiple positions or pay rates, department or job allocation, missed punches, late approvals, and overtime. The system should make exceptions visible, preserve edits and approvals, and pass approved hours and labor allocation to payroll. TCP describes manufacturing capabilities that include hours, breaks, exceptions, accruals, overtime, pay rates, and job codes; those are vendor-described features, not an independent evaluation of a product.

No—not under the federal guidance cited here. In a June 27, 1983 opinion letter, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division stated: “In this regard, an employer, while required to keep accurate records of employees’ hours of work, is not required to use a time clock to do so.” The requirement described is accurate records, not a particular device or punch method. Read the DOL opinion letter, FLSA-1122.

The letter also discusses rounding clock-in and clock-out times to the nearest five minutes, tenth of an hour, or quarter of an hour only when the arrangement averages out over time so employees are fully compensated for actual time worked. It says work permitted before or after a scheduled shift must be recorded as compensable time. This is a fact-specific federal opinion from 1983, not a blanket approval of rounding or a complete account of current state, local, union, or non-U.S. requirements.
Compare time-clock methods for a factory
A manufacturer may use more than one capture method for different worker groups. Choose based on where employees work, how they move, shift-change traffic, device access, connectivity, authentication, job transfers, correction controls, and payroll integration. The table describes potential fits, not a ranking of vendors or a claim that any option is best for every plant.

| Method | Potential fit | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed terminal | Controlled entrances or designated production-floor clock points | Durability and mounting, queue length at shift changes, badge replacement, offline capture, job transfers, and payroll compatibility. Confirm that the terminal location captures the work time the employer intends to record. |
| Shared kiosk or browser clock | A secure shared workstation or tablet employees already use | Authentication, privacy, accessibility, throughput, and whether the shared device creates a bottleneck. Vendor-described approaches include tablet capture, barcode scanning, RFID proximity badges, and browser clocking. |
| Mobile clock | Field service, deliveries, remote yards, or workers moving among sites | Device access, connectivity, location tracking, reimbursement, privacy, applicable local requirements, and payroll workflow. |
| Supervisor-entered time and exception workflow | Crews or cases such as missed punches where direct clocking is not practical | Employee visibility, approval controls, edit history, and a way for workers to dispute incorrect entries. |
| Biometric terminal | A workplace considering fingerprint or face recognition for identity checks | Consent, retention, security, applicable law, alternatives, and employee acceptance. Do not assume biometrics are universally lawful or that a vendor claim about preventing buddy punching is an independently verified result. |
Fixed terminals: control the location and the queue
A fixed employee time clock machine can suit a controlled entrance or a designated production area. Before buying, check its mounting and operating requirements, badge needs, offline behavior, durability, and integration with the existing timekeeping and payroll stack. A terminal at an entrance may not be the right capture point if workers must perform compensable work elsewhere before clocking in; the location and process should record the time that must be counted.
Kiosks and browser clocks: plan for shared use
A tablet, kiosk, or browser clock may fit a secure shared workstation. A shared device still needs a clear sign-in flow and enough capacity for shift changes; otherwise, a convenient clock can become a line or a source of rushed, inaccurate punches. Zebra describes tablet-based capture, barcode scanning, and RFID proximity badges, while Dayforce describes browser-based clocking. Those are descriptions of vendor offerings, not comparative test results.

- Built-In Data Protection: Integrated backup safeguards attendance records during power outages, keeping data secure and recoverable to minimize disruptions.
Mobile clocks: match the device to the work
Mobile punches can be relevant when workers travel between sites, work in remote yards, make deliveries, or perform field service. Review whether employees have access to suitable devices, how punches work without reliable connectivity, whether location data is collected, who pays for device use, and what privacy and local-law requirements apply. Zebra and Dayforce document mobile clocking options.
Biometrics: treat identity verification as a separate decision
Fingerprint or face recognition may be offered as an authentication method, but it does not remove the need for accurate time records, sound correction procedures, or legal review. Before considering it, assess consent, data retention, security, applicable state and local law, and a workable alternative for employees who cannot or do not use the biometric method. Claims that biometrics prevent buddy punching should be treated as vendor claims unless independently substantiated.

Run realistic factory scenarios before choosing
A product demonstration should show how the system handles the plant’s actual exceptions, not only a clean shift with an on-time start and stop. Use representative cases and compare the resulting timecard and payroll handoff with a known-correct example.

- Record an overnight shift that crosses a calendar-day boundary and check how the workweek boundary is handled.
- Enter a missed punch, route a correction for approval, and inspect the employee-visible record and edit history.
- Transfer a worker between jobs or departments and verify how labor allocation appears on the timecard and payroll output.
- Record an interrupted meal and confirm that the actual work time is visible and can be handled under the applicable pay rules.
- Add unscheduled overtime and check how the system flags it and routes any required approval.
- Apply multiple pay rates, premiums, or shift differentials and verify the calculated result against a known-correct timecard.
- Close a payroll period, then test how an approved retroactive correction is recorded and passed to payroll.
These are implementation checks, not evidence that a specific vendor has passed them. Make sure the demonstration includes the edit trail and payroll handoff, not just the clock-in screen.

- Privacy and legal review: Assess location tracking and biometric data separately, and check requirements that apply in the plant’s jurisdiction.
- Compatibility: Verify integration with the current scheduling, timekeeping, and payroll systems, including the fields needed for labor allocation.
- Support and operating costs: Confirm service support and any ongoing device, software, or connectivity requirements before committing.
TCP Software/TimeClock Plus, Dayforce, and Zebra describe different manufacturing or time-capture capabilities, including physical clocks, kiosks, mobile and browser options, and identity methods. Their published descriptions can help identify features to ask about, but they do not establish independent comparative performance or make a specific device a recommendation. Product specifications and integrations can change, so verify them with the vendor before purchase.
