An Ethereum smart wallet is an account whose transaction authorization and execution can be governed by smart-contract logic. Depending on how it is built, it may support features such as multiple signers, custom recovery, spending rules, batched transactions or sponsored fees—but no single feature is guaranteed. The wallet app is the interface; the account is the Ethereum entity that holds assets and acts on-chain.
What is an Ethereum smart wallet?
A smart wallet is a wallet interface used to operate an Ethereum account with programmable authorization or transaction-execution rules. Those rules can be implemented by a deployed smart contract or, through a different mechanism, by code delegated to an externally owned account (EOA). The term is commonly associated with smart-contract accounts and account abstraction, but specific capabilities depend on the wallet’s implementation.
Ethereum.org defines a wallet as “an interface or application that lets you interact with your Ethereum account, either an externally-owned account or a contract account.” This distinction matters: a wallet app is not itself necessarily the account, and “smart wallet” does not name one standardized product or guarantee a fixed set of features. How is a smart wallet different from a regular crypto wallet?
The key difference is the account’s control model, not simply the app’s appearance. A conventional EOA is controlled by private keys. A contract account is controlled by code in a deployed smart contract and has no private key of its own. Either account type can receive, hold and send ETH and tokens, and interact with contracts.
| Account or mechanism | How it is controlled | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Externally owned account (EOA) | Private-key signatures authorize transactions. | An EOA does not inherently have programmable contract-account rules. |
| ERC-4337 smart-contract account | The account’s code applies its own validation logic to UserOperations. | Features and dependencies vary by implementation and supported infrastructure. |
| EIP-7702 EOA delegation | An EOA authorizes code delegation, enabling smart-account-like behavior at its address. | This is not the same account model as a deployed ERC-4337 contract account; delegation and setup must be handled carefully. |
Account abstraction can let an implementation define who may authorize actions and how they execute. Possible options include multiple signatures, backup keys or trusted guardians, spending constraints, transaction batching, gas sponsorship and fee payment in a token. These are choices made by wallet developers, not properties of every smart wallet. Ethereum.org’s account abstraction overview

What is the difference between ERC-4337 and EIP-7702?
ERC-4337: a separate UserOperation flow
ERC-4337 enables smart-contract accounts without requiring changes to Ethereum’s consensus layer. A user operation describes the actions an account wants to perform. Bundlers collect user operations and submit a transaction that invokes the EntryPoint contract; the account’s code supplies its validation logic. The standard’s EntryPoint was deployed to Ethereum Mainnet on March 1, 2023, a date reported by Ethereum.org. ERC-4337 specification
This design can support different signature schemes, multisig, custom recovery, sponsored fees or token-denominated fees, and batched execution. Availability depends on the account implementation and the supporting bundlers, paymasters, wallet interfaces and network. A sponsored transaction is not necessarily free: sponsorship can depend on a service provider and its rules.

EIP-7702 lets an EOA authorize code delegation so that smart-account-like behavior can operate at the EOA’s address. It offers a different route from deploying a contract account and should not be described as identical to ERC-4337. Ethereum.org recommends compatible wallet interfaces for accessing EIP-7702 features and notes that dApps do not have a standardized method for directly requesting EIP-7702 authorization signatures. The EIP calls changing an account’s delegation a security-critical operation that should not be done lightly, particularly when the delegated code is not designed and tested as an upgrade to the old code. It also says setup calldata must be authenticated by the EOA key to prevent an observer from front-running initialization. In practical terms, users should understand what code they are authorizing and who can change it.
What can a smart wallet do—and what is not automatic?
Smart-account logic can make transaction controls more flexible, but the wallet’s actual code and service integrations determine what is available. Before relying on a capability, check the implementation’s rules rather than assuming it follows from the label “smart wallet.”

- Recovery: A wallet may allow backup keys, guardians or multiple signers. Recovery is not automatic or guaranteed; establish who can initiate it, what threshold is required, and whether a third party must participate.
- Shared authorization: A multisig or other policy can require more than one approval. Confirm how many signers are needed and who can add, remove or replace them.
- Spending rules and batching: Code may constrain transfers or execute several calls together. Check the rules and the actions presented for approval.
- Sponsored or alternative-token fees: These options can rely on bundlers, paymasters, relayers or wallet providers. They are not universally available and do not mean every transaction is free.
What should you check before using one?
- Supported networks and dApps: Confirm that the wallet, account mechanism and applications you use support the same chain and transaction flow.
- Recovery and signer changes: Read the recovery process, approval threshold and rules for changing signers. Identify any guardian or provider on whom recovery depends.
- Upgrade or delegation authority: Find out who can update a contract account or change an EOA’s delegation, and what code those permissions authorize.
- Fee dependencies: Check whether transactions require a particular bundler, paymaster, relayer or wallet service, and what happens if it is unavailable.
- Signing-device compatibility: A hardware wallet is a key-management and signing device, not the smart wallet itself. Support for a signing device does not guarantee that it supports every smart-account feature or delegation flow. Ethereum.org’s EIP-7702 guidance discusses hardware providers supporting delegation contracts through their companion software. EIP-7702 guidance
