At their US launch prices, the Galaxy S25 and iPhone 17 both started at $799—but that buys different storage: 128GB on Samsung’s base model and 256GB on Apple’s. At the same 256GB capacity, the cited launch MSRPs were $859 for the S25 and $799 for the iPhone 17. The better fit depends on whether you value Samsung’s dedicated 3x telephoto camera and Android flexibility or prefer iPhone’s tested camera results and iOS ecosystem.
Price comparison: match storage before comparing
These are US launch MSRPs listed by PhoneArena, not current retail prices or offers. Prices vary by market, date and promotion.

| Model and storage | US launch MSRP |
|---|---|
| Galaxy S25, 128GB | $799 |
| Galaxy S25, 256GB | $859 |
| Galaxy S25, 512GB | $959 |
| iPhone 17, 256GB | $799 |
| iPhone 17, 512GB | $999 |
At 256GB, the iPhone 17’s listed launch price is $60 below the S25’s. The $799 headline starting prices are not a like-for-like comparison: the iPhone includes twice the base storage. Before buying, check current prices for the exact storage tier and whether a seller’s price is unlocked retail, a carrier promotion or an installment offer. PhoneArena’s comparison supplies the launch-price figures.

Samsung specifies the Galaxy S25 display as 6.2 inches diagonally across the full rectangle, with 2340 × 1080 resolution, Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology and a refresh rate up to 120Hz. PhoneArena lists the iPhone 17 at 6.3 inches, 2622 × 1206 resolution and 120Hz. Those comparison-page specifications are secondary-source figures; regional models and manufacturer specifications should be checked if an exact SKU matters. In Tom’s Guide’s comparison, the S25 measured brighter, while the iPhone 17 scored better on that publication’s color-accuracy measure. These are test observations, not guarantees for every unit or viewing condition. The S25 weighs 162g according to Samsung; PhoneArena lists both phones’ refresh rate at 120Hz.
Camera systems: zoom reach versus tested image rendering
The Galaxy S25 has three rear cameras: 50MP wide, 10MP telephoto and 12MP ultrawide. Samsung lists 3x optical zoom for the telephoto camera. That separate lens gives the S25 a dedicated optical-zoom option rather than relying solely on the main camera’s crop. Samsung lists the S25 camera specifications here.

Having a telephoto lens does not by itself establish which phone takes better pictures overall. In Tom’s Guide’s tested camera scenes, the iPhone 17 produced more balanced color and had an advantage in low light. That describes the publisher’s sample comparisons, not every lighting situation or every user’s preference. If zoom framing is important, the S25’s dedicated 3x camera is a practical distinction; if the tested low-light and color rendering align with your priorities, the iPhone’s results may appeal more. Read Tom’s Guide’s comparison and test observations.
Battery: capacity is not runtime
Samsung specifies the Galaxy S25’s rated battery capacity as 3885mAh. Some comparison listings show a 4000mAh typical capacity; rated and typical figures describe different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable. Samsung also says the S25 does not include a travel adapter, and notes that box contents may vary by country or region.

- FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment
In Tom’s Guide’s 2025 battery test, the Galaxy S25 ran for 15 hours 43 minutes and the iPhone 17 for 12 hours 47 minutes. Those are outcomes from that publication’s controlled test, not expected everyday runtimes: screen settings, signal strength, apps and usage patterns can change battery life. See Tom’s Guide’s test comparison for the testing context.
Android or iOS: choose around the devices and services you already use
The hardware comparison cannot decide which operating system suits you. The S25 runs Samsung’s Android-based One UI experience; the iPhone 17 uses iOS. Consider which phone works naturally with your current devices, apps and services before switching: an existing collection of apps, accessories or workflows can outweigh a modest difference in a specification.

- Choose the Galaxy S25 if you want Android/One UI, a dedicated 3x optical-zoom camera, or the Samsung model’s tested battery result is especially persuasive to you.
- Choose the iPhone 17 if you prefer iOS, want 256GB at the cited $799 US launch MSRP, or place weight on Tom’s Guide’s favorable low-light and color observations.
- Compare current offers for the same storage and purchase conditions; the launch-price table is not a live-price check.
Which phone is the better buy?
For a like-capacity launch-price comparison, the iPhone 17 256GB was $60 cheaper than the Galaxy S25 256GB in the cited US MSRP listings. The S25’s strongest differentiator is its dedicated 3x telephoto camera, while third-party testing favored the iPhone for low-light camera results and balanced color and recorded longer battery life for the S25 in one controlled test. Neither result makes one phone the universal winner: storage, operating-system preference and the features you actually use should decide between them.
