In India, AMC means Asset Management Company: the professional organization appointed to manage a mutual fund’s schemes. It researches investments, builds and monitors scheme portfolios in line with their stated objectives, makes changes when needed, and handles related administration. The AMC manages the scheme; it is not the scheme itself, a personal financial adviser, or the only organization involved in the fund.
What an AMC does
When you invest in a mutual fund scheme, you pool money with other investors and delegate day-to-day investment management to the AMC. SEBI describes this as outsourcing the job of managing money to the AMC. Its work includes:

- Managing a scheme’s portfolio in line with its stated investment objective.
- Researching and selecting investments for the portfolio.
- Monitoring those investments and making portfolio changes when required.
- Handling administration associated with running the scheme.
The scheme’s objective and applicable regulation constrain how its assets may be managed; the AMC does not have unlimited discretion to invest them in any way it chooses. Scheme information, portfolio disclosures and net asset value (NAV) information help investors understand what a scheme holds and how it is reported. SEBI Investor’s mutual-fund guide explains the AMC’s role and the information available to investors.

How the AMC fits into a mutual fund
An Indian mutual fund has distinct organizations with distinct responsibilities. The AMC is the manager, but it is not the sponsor, trustee or custodian.
#1 Best Overall
| Role | What it does |
|---|---|
| Sponsor | Establishes the mutual fund. |
| Trustees | Hold the fund’s property for unit holders and oversee the fund. |
| AMC | Is appointed to manage the fund and operate its schemes. |
| Custodian | Holds securities in custody. |
This separation matters: portfolio management and governance oversight are not the same job. SEBI’s regulations set out the structure, while its July 2023 circular discusses responsibilities connected to trustees and AMC boards. SEBI Mutual Funds Regulations and the July 2023 governance circular provide the regulatory context.
How AMCs are paid
Scheme expenses pay for fund management and related professional services. These expenses are regulated and capped, but there is no single expense ratio that applies to every AMC or scheme. Costs vary by scheme and can change, so check the latest scheme documents and disclosures before investing. SEBI’s mutual-fund investor charter describes investor information and disclosure rights; its mutual-fund guide covers expenses.

Direct and regular plans: the AMC is not the difference
A direct plan and a regular plan can belong to the same scheme; the distinction is how the investor accesses it and the associated distribution costs. A direct plan is purchased from the AMC without an intermediary. A regular plan uses an intermediary such as a broker, agent or distributor, and its expense ratio includes intermediary commission. A direct plan omits that commission.
Compare the actual current expense ratios for the plans you are considering, and weigh the cost against whether you want intermediary support or prefer to research and transact independently. A lower cost does not guarantee a better result, and plan choice does not replace checking the scheme’s objective, risks and suitability. SEBI’s guidance on direct and regular mutual funds explains the distinction.

- Not the mutual fund scheme: the scheme is the investment product and portfolio; the AMC is its appointed manager.
- Not your personal financial adviser: managing a scheme is different from assessing your circumstances and giving personalized advice.
- Not necessarily your distributor: a distributor helps sell or provide access to a fund, while the AMC manages the scheme’s portfolio and operations.
Choosing an AMC does not remove investment risk or guarantee returns. Investors should assess the particular scheme and its disclosures rather than treating professional management as a promise of performance.
