Caterpillar is a much larger, more diversified industrial manufacturer by reported 2025 revenue; Terex is more focused on specialized equipment for materials processing, waste and recycling, aerial access, and electric utilities. That scale difference is a useful starting point—not a verdict on which company is better, safer, or more attractive as an investment. The sharper comparison is how their end markets, results, portfolios, and disclosed risks differ.
What do Caterpillar and Terex sell?
Caterpillar: equipment, power systems, and financing
Caterpillar manufactures construction and mining equipment, off-highway diesel and natural-gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives. Its primary operating segments are Construction Industries, Resource Industries, and Power & Energy. Financial Products provides financing and related services alongside those machinery businesses. Caterpillar also identifies its independent global dealer network as a defining part of its business profile.

Terex: specialized equipment and solutions
Terex focuses on machinery and solutions for materials processing, waste and recycling, mobile elevating work platforms, and the electric utility industry. It also provides lifecycle parts and service support and digital solutions. For reporting periods beginning January 1, 2025, its reportable segments were Environmental Solutions (ES), Material Processing (MP), and Aerials; Utilities was moved into ES, and prior segment presentation was retrospectively adjusted.

The sales figures show a large difference in reported scale, but they are issuer-reported measures with different labels. The profitability and cash figures also use different measures, so they are not a like-for-like scorecard. Caterpillar’s adjusted margin and Terex’s adjusted operating profit are non-GAAP measures; compare their definitions in the companies’ disclosures before drawing conclusions from them.
Read Terex’s growth in light of portfolio changes
Terex’s reported sales rose primarily because the addition of its Environmental Solutions Group (ESG) offset declines in Aerials and MP. Excluding ESG, legacy revenue decreased 11.0% in 2025. The reported increase therefore does not mean that demand grew across Terex’s established businesses.

These segment amounts and changes are from Terex Corporation’s 2026 full-year results release. Segment comparisons can carry pro forma and divestiture caveats; the segment figures should not be added or treated as a direct reconciliation to consolidated net sales. The reported segment boundaries also differ from Caterpillar’s.

How should you compare their business strength?
- Look beyond company size. Caterpillar’s $67.589 billion in 2025 sales and revenues versus Terex’s $5.4 billion in net sales establishes scale, not relative resilience, growth quality, valuation, or investment suitability.
- Compare end markets and segment trends. Assess each company’s own segment performance and disclosed drivers. A Terex Aerials result is not a direct counterpart to a Caterpillar segment because the businesses and reporting boundaries differ.
- Use consistent financial definitions. Distinguish GAAP operating profit from adjusted operating profit, and check how each issuer defines its cash-flow measures before comparing them.
- Assess distribution and lifecycle support on their own terms. Caterpillar points to its independent global dealer network and Cat Financial; Terex describes parts and service support and digital solutions. These company-described systems do not establish a quantified head-to-head comparison of service quality.
- Separate operating history from the current portfolio. Terex’s 2025 results include the Environmental Solutions Group addition, while its post-year-end merger with REV Group changes the business it expects to report going forward.
What risks does each company disclose?
Both companies disclose exposure to industrial cycles and execution challenges, but their specific markets and risk lists differ. A risk factor means the issuer has identified an exposure; it is not a prediction that the event will occur, nor does the length of one company’s list establish that it is riskier or safer.

Caterpillar’s disclosed risk categories
Caterpillar’s 2025 Form 10-K discusses risks related to market and economic conditions, demand across its end markets, competition, manufacturing and execution, supply chains, regulation, foreign currency, and information-technology security. Its filing specifically notes that cybersecurity threats may affect systems, networks, products, and services. The filing’s Item 1A gives the company’s full risk-factor wording.
Terex’s disclosed risk categories
Terex’s 2025 Form 10-K discusses cyclical markets and economic conditions, trade policy and tariffs, input costs and supply chains, foreign currency, integration and portfolio management, and execution. It also describes uncertainties that can cause actual outcomes to differ materially from forward-looking statements. The annual report generally speaks as of December 31, 2025, so later events should be assessed using disclosures dated after that point.

For an investment comparison, consider how exposed each company is to the risks that matter to your analysis: market cycles, input costs, tariffs, supply chains, currency movements, regulation, technology and cybersecurity, and the ability to execute its strategy. This is a framework for examining the filings, not a conclusion that one company has lower overall risk.
How does the REV merger affect the comparison?
Terex completed its merger with REV Group in February 2026, after the fiscal year covered by Terex’s 2025 Form 10-K. Its 2025 results are historical results for the portfolio and reporting period described in that release; they should not be read as results for the post-merger company.

Terex’s 2026 outlook in its full-year results release assumes 11 months of the new Specialty Vehicle segment, approximately $28 million of realized synergies during 2026, and tariff rates remaining at the levels current when the guidance was issued. These are management assumptions in a forward-looking outlook, not confirmed future results.
What is the most useful way to decide which comparison matters?
Start with the question you are trying to answer. For business exposure, map revenue and segment trends to each company’s end markets. For operating performance, compare margins and cash flow only after aligning definitions and accounting periods. For risk, read each issuer’s risk factors alongside its portfolio and market exposures. For a current view of Terex, distinguish the fiscal-2025 disclosures from post-merger reporting and forward-looking assumptions.
This comparison alone does not establish a valuation conclusion or determine whether either stock suits a particular investor.
