An active HDMI cable has electronics built into the cable assembly to help carry the signal, often on longer or higher-bandwidth runs. It is directional: connect the end marked Source to the transmitting device and the end marked Sink to the display or other receiving device. Its power needs and supported bandwidth depend on the specific cable and connected equipment.
What does “active” mean in an HDMI cable?
“Active” describes how the cable assembly handles the signal: it contains electronics that condition, amplify, or otherwise process the signal path. It does not mean every active HDMI cable uses optical fiber, requires a separate power lead, or supports the same formats.

Active and passive describe cable operation, not a performance tier. To find out what a particular cable supports, check its stated HDMI cable category, certification, length, connectors, and format specifications.

Which end goes into the TV or display?
Follow the labels printed on the cable. Connect Source to the device sending the signal, such as a game console, computer, or player. Connect Sink to the receiving device, such as a TV, monitor, or receiver.
#1 Best Overall
- 8K Fiber HDMI 2.1 Cable -- Optical hdmi cable 30ft supports High-speed 48Gbps, 8K@60Hz, 4K@120Hz, 2K@240Hz, Dynamic HDR, Dolby Vision, eARC, HDCP 2.2&2.3, 3D, 32 Audio Channels, 4:4:4 RGB, ALLM, QFT, QMS, VRR, DSC etc. Backward compatible with version 2.0 / 1.4 / 1.2 / 1.1.
- Slim & Flexible Fiber HDMI Cable -- Compared with traditional copper core cables, active hdmi cable have a greater bandwidth, faster speed, less signal attenuation, no electromagnetic interference, are slimmer and more flexible, have a stronger bending strength, and a longer service life, which is the development direction of future cables.
- Long Distance Signal Lossless Transmission -- Fiber optic hdmi 2.1 cable can achieve lossless transmission, the longest transmission distance of up to 300m. Copper hdmi cord can't reach 18Gbps for more than 50 feet, while fiber hdmi cables can reach and without signal loss.
- High Quality Active HDMI Cable -- The long hdmi cable feature gold-plated connectors to prevent oxidation and are protected by a zinc alloy housing. Withstands over 20,000+ bending cycles.
- Unidirectional Transmission -- Fiber optic hdmi cable is one-directional transmission. The plugs at each end are marked "SOURCE" and "DISPLAY". The "SOURCE" plug connects signal source devices such as TV Box, PS5, PS4, PS3, Blu-ray Players, Xbox Series, Laptop etc. The "DISPLAY" plug connects display end devices such as TV, Displays, Projector, Moniter etc. Please make sure you plug in each end correctly, you will not get signal from the device.
HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. says reversing the cable will not damage it, but the connection will not work. Identify the ends before routing the cable through a wall, conduit, or furniture.
Does an active HDMI cable need power?
It depends on the cable and source. Some cables support HDMI Cable Power, a feature that requires support from both the cable and the HDMI source. HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc. says Cable Power can draw up to 300 mA from the source’s 5V supply.

Other cables have a separate power connector, often a USB lead. If the source does not support HDMI Cable Power, the cable’s separate power connection must be attached. Check both the cable and device documentation rather than assuming that an HDMI port supplies Cable Power.

HDMI Licensing Administrator, Inc.’s current HDMI 2.2 specification overview lists these maximum bandwidth figures for cable categories:
| Cable category | Maximum bandwidth listed |
|---|---|
| Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable | Up to 48 Gbps |
| Ultra96 HDMI Cable | Up to 96 Gbps |
These are category figures, not a promise that every active cable can carry those rates. HDMI LA says the specification permits wire, passive, active, and converter cable assemblies. When bandwidth matters, look for the official category designation and the matching certification label; certification does not establish the cable’s direction or power requirements.

- Supports HDR: HDR is an acronym for High Dynamic Range. TVs with HDR show a better, more realistic image with more contrast, brightness, and colors than ever before. HDR significantly expands contrast ratio and color accuracy. Contrast ratio is related to how bright or dark a screen is and color accuracy is how closely the colors on the screen match colors in real life. Bright images seem brighter, with more depth.
How long can an active HDMI cable be?
There is no single maximum length that applies to every active HDMI cable. HDMI LA says cable length depends on factors including cable type and construction. Choose a model whose documented length and supported formats suit the actual run, and account for connector type and routing or bend constraints.
For a difficult installed run, such as one routed through a wall or conduit, consider getting help from a professional AV installer. HDMI LA’s cable-type guidance explains why cable construction and category matter when selecting a cable.
Quick Recap
What should you check before buying or installing one?
- Direction: Confirm which end is marked Source and which is marked Sink, then plan the route accordingly.
- Length and connectors: Match the cable’s documented length and connector types to the run and devices.
- Required format: Check that the specific cable supports the resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and audio features you intend to use.
- Category and certification: If bandwidth is important, verify the official cable category and corresponding certification label. HDMI LA describes certification context on its Premium High Speed HDMI Cable page and in its cable-type guidance.
- Power: Verify whether the source supports HDMI Cable Power or whether the cable’s separate power connector needs to be connected.
What to check if there is no picture
- Check that the Source end is connected to the signal-generating device and the Sink end to the display or receiver.
- If the cable has a separate power connector, connect it when required by the cable instructions, particularly if the source does not support HDMI Cable Power.
- Confirm that the cable, source, and display support the format you are trying to use.
