How to Prompt a RAG System to Answer in a Different Language

For cross-language RAG, keep retrieval and generation distinct: preserve the original question, specify the desired answer language, and test evidence use and language consistency separately.

Tell the model explicitly which language to use for its answer, and include the user’s original question in the generation context. You can translate or expand that question for retrieval when useful, but retain the original for answer generation. Writing the prompt in the answer language may help some models, but there is no universal rule: choose an instruction language the selected model follows reliably, then test the actual language pair and workflow.

Which language should you use in the generation prompt?

Separate the prompt’s instruction language from the language requested for the answer. The instruction can be in a language your model reliably follows; the instruction should still name the required output language directly. For example: Use the supplied sources to answer the original question. Write the final answer in [target language]. Preserve names and technical terms when translating them would reduce accuracy. If the sources do not support an answer, say so.

This is a practical starting point, not a benchmark-proven template. The best instruction language can vary by model and language pair. A 2024 study of multilingual RAG concludes that task-specific prompt engineering is needed to produce answers in the user’s language, even when multilingual retrievers and generators are available (ACL workshop paper).

How should you handle the original question and retrieval query?

Retrieval and answer generation have different jobs. A translated or expanded query may help search a corpus whose language differs from the user’s. But do not let that rewrite replace the user’s original question in the generation context: Microsoft’s Azure Architecture Center guidance allows query translation before prompt inclusion and advises sending the original query to the model for generation too (Microsoft RAG prompt engineering guidance).

  1. Keep the original question. Pass it to generation so the model can answer the user’s request rather than only the wording of a retrieval transformation.
  2. Translate or expand for search when appropriate. Use a retrieval-side query suited to the corpus, while preserving the original alongside it.
  3. Make the answer-language instruction explicit. Name the target language in the generation prompt, even if the question or retrieved evidence is in another language.
  4. Preserve meaning-sensitive terms. Tell the model to keep names and technical terms when translation would make the answer less accurate, and to acknowledge unsupported claims.

Why isn’t a multilingual model enough?

Multilingual capability does not guarantee that the right passages will be retrieved, that evidence in another language will be interpreted correctly, or that the final answer will stay in the requested language. XRAG, a 2025 study of cross-lingual retrieval-augmented generation, reports response-language correctness challenges in monolingual retrieval and cross-language reasoning challenges with multilingual retrieval (XRAG). A multilingual system can therefore succeed at one part of the pipeline and fail at another.

Language drift is another risk. A 2026 AAAI paper describes unintended output-language drift and reports English as a frequent fallback in its cross-lingual experiments; that is a finding about the paper’s experiments, not a prediction for every model or deployment (Language Drift in Multilingual RAG).

How should you test a cross-language RAG setup?

Evaluate the stages separately rather than treating a fluent answer as proof that the whole system worked. Cross-lingual RAG research examines retrieval sensitivity to query language and distinguishes retrieval from reasoning over evidence (Breaking Language Preference in Multilingual RAG). A 2025 ACL paper evaluates consistent use of relevant passages across languages, expected output language, and resistance to multilingual distractors (On the Consistency of Multilingual Context Utilization in RAG).

  • Retrieval relevance: Do the retrieved passages actually support the answer when the question and documents use different languages?
  • Cross-language evidence use: Does the model reason from relevant passages in the evidence language, rather than ignoring them or relying on surface-language cues?
  • Output-language consistency: Is the answer in the requested language throughout, including when examples, user input, or retrieved passages use other languages?
  • Distractor handling: Does the model focus on relevant passages when the context contains multilingual material that does not answer the question?
  • Operational trade-offs: Compare latency and added translation steps, and ensure tests cover the language pairs and domains used in deployment.

Run these checks against the actual combinations of question language, corpus language, examples, and retrieved passages that users will encounter. Repeat them after changing the model version, retriever, translation component, or supported languages. No single configuration is established as best on every quality and operational measure.
