AMD, short for Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., is a semiconductor and computing technology company. It makes processors, graphics and AI accelerators, networking and embedded-computing products, and related software for PCs, data centers, gaming systems, and other specialized equipment.
What does AMD stand for?
AMD stands for Advanced Micro Devices. In its FY2025 Form 10-K, the company uses “AMD” to refer to Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. and its consolidated subsidiaries. The name identifies the company, not one particular chip or product.

AMD’s portfolio includes computing components, platforms, and software. Its FY2025 annual report lists CPUs, GPUs, AI accelerators, data-processing units, AI network interface cards, FPGAs, system-on-modules, adaptive and semi-custom SoCs, and development services. It also describes ROCm software for AI and high-performance computing. AMD FY2025 Form 10-K, filed February 4, 2026
#1 Best Overall
- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
Processors for PCs
Ryzen is AMD’s family of desktop and notebook processors. A CPU carries out general computing instructions; the right processor depends on the specific computer, workload, and compatible platform. Some processors include integrated graphics, but an AMD CPU is not the same thing as a separate graphics card.
Graphics for PCs and gaming
Radeon includes AMD’s PC graphics products, including discrete Radeon RX GPUs. A discrete GPU is a separate graphics processor, commonly installed as a graphics card in a desktop PC. AMD also makes semi-custom SoCs used in game consoles, which are purpose-built systems rather than standard desktop components.

Server and AI infrastructure
For data centers, AMD sells EPYC server CPUs and Instinct accelerators, as well as GPUs, networking products, DPUs, AI network interface cards, FPGAs, and adaptive SoCs. These products are intended for infrastructure and specialized computing workloads, not ordinary consumer PC upgrades.
Embedded and adaptive products
AMD’s embedded portfolio includes processors, APUs, FPGAs, system-on-modules, and adaptive SoCs. These can be built into purpose-specific equipment in areas such as automotive, industrial systems, healthcare, communications, and storage.

Why does AMD come up in PC, gaming, and data-center discussions?
AMD supplies different kinds of technology to several parts of the computing market. A PC buyer may encounter Ryzen processors or Radeon graphics; a game console may use a semi-custom AMD chip; and a data-center operator may use EPYC CPUs or Instinct accelerators. Embedded products serve another set of manufacturers and applications.
AMD reports its business in three segments: Data Center, Client and Gaming, and Embedded. It combined Client and Gaming into one reportable segment beginning in fiscal 2025. The segment names describe how AMD organizes its reporting; they do not mean that every product in a segment is interchangeable or aimed at the same buyer. Is AMD a computer company?
AMD is a semiconductor and computing technology company, rather than a manufacturer of complete computers as its defining business. It designs and sells the chips, accelerators, programmable devices, platforms, and software that are used in PCs, servers, consoles, and specialized systems. Other companies may incorporate those products into complete computers and equipment.
What should you check when you see “AMD” on a product?
The AMD name alone does not tell you which product it is, what it can do, or whether it fits a particular system. Identify the product class and exact model before drawing conclusions about performance or compatibility.

- For a PC processor: check the exact Ryzen model, the intended desktop or notebook system, workload, and platform compatibility.
- For a graphics card: check the exact Radeon RX model, the intended workload, and whether the PC has suitable compatibility, power, and cooling.
- For a server or AI system: distinguish CPUs such as EPYC from accelerators such as Instinct; they serve different roles in infrastructure.
- For embedded equipment: identify the specific processor, FPGA, or adaptive device and the requirements of the purpose-built system.
Product families and business descriptions can change over time. AMD’s FY2025 annual report and its August 5, 2026 quarterly filing provide the company’s descriptions for those reporting periods; a current model’s availability and specifications should be checked against its own product information.
