Amazon’s Project Kuiper is now called Amazon Leo. It is a planned low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet network: an outdoor customer terminal connects to satellites overhead, which relay data to ground gateways and the wider internet. Amazon says its initial constellation design includes more than 3,000 satellites, but the company’s rollout statements do not establish that consumer service is generally available today.
How Amazon Leo satellite internet is designed to work
Amazon describes the system as three connected parts: customer terminals, satellites, and ground infrastructure. The terminal at a home or business communicates with satellites as they pass overhead. Those satellites relay traffic to gateway antennas on the ground, which connect through Amazon’s ground network to the internet, public cloud, or private networks. Amazon’s overview of the system also says every satellite will carry optical inter-satellite links, or lasers, intended to form a mesh in space. That could let traffic travel between satellites before reaching a gateway; it does not mean every connection will always follow the same route.

In practical terms, the user’s antenna sends and receives data over a satellite link, while ground gateways provide a path onward to other networks. The service therefore depends not only on the terminal and satellites, but also on the ground network and available coverage and capacity.

Why use low Earth orbit?
Amazon says its satellites will orbit about 590–630 kilometers (367–392 miles) above Earth. Because LEO satellites are closer than traditional high-orbit satellite systems, Amazon says the design can support lower latency and uses such as video calls, gaming, and high-definition streaming. Those are expected benefits described by the company, not independently established performance measurements or guarantees for every location.

Amazon’s current description calls for an initial constellation of more than 3,000 satellites. A separate, older Amazon announcement said the Federal Communications Commission had authorized 3,236 satellites in the United States. The figures describe different things: the later explainer’s initial design and a historical authorization announcement, not the number currently operating. Amazon’s FCC approval announcement provides that earlier context.
What are the Leo terminals and advertised speeds?
Customers use dedicated outdoor terminals. Amazon currently names three models and advertises the following maximum speeds:
Rank #2
- Gen 3 Satellite Dish: Third-generation antenna delivers a stronger, more stable signal and faster performance.
- Wi-Fi 6 Router: Modern router technology supports faster speeds, increased device capacity, and better efficiency.
- Extra 150FT Cable Included: Extended reach for more flexible installation in large spaces or hard-to-access locations.
- High-Speed, Low-Latency Internet: Stream HD content, video conference, or work remotely with confidence.
- Ideal for Rural and Remote Areas: Perfect for homes, cabins, RVs, boats, and off-grid setups where wired internet isn’t available.
| Terminal | Size or description | Amazon-advertised maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Leo Nano | 7 × 7 inches | Up to 100 Mbps downlink |
| Leo Pro | 11 × 11 inches | Up to 400 Mbps downlink |
| Leo Ultra | Enterprise-grade | Up to 1 Gbps downlink and 400 Mbps uplink |
These are Amazon-advertised maximums, not typical speeds, service guarantees, or independently tested results. The company’s earlier terminal announcement discussed engineering models, so its historical dimensions and weight estimates should not be treated as current shipping specifications. Amazon’s terminal announcement contains that earlier information.

When will Amazon Leo be available?
Amazon says full-scale satellite deployment began in April 2025, using launch providers Arianespace, Blue Origin, SpaceX, and United Launch Alliance. In November 2025, the company said an enterprise preview had begun, giving select business customers access to the network with production hardware and software. Amazon has described a wider rollout in 2026 as it adds satellites, coverage, and capacity. Its current service overview does not establish a definitive consumer launch date or provide a country-by-country availability list. A planned wider rollout is not proof that general consumer service is available at a particular address.
For historical context, an Amazon submission hosted by the Australian Government in 2024 said service pricing had not yet been revealed at that time. That dated statement does not establish today’s price. The submission is Amazon’s contribution hosted by the government, not an independent government assessment.

Who is Amazon Leo intended to serve?
Amazon says the network is intended for people and organizations beyond the reach of existing networks, including households, schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies. It has also described satellite backhaul as a way for wireless carriers to extend service. These are intended use cases, not proof of coverage or availability for any specific user.

If you are weighing satellite service against fiber, fixed wireless, or another satellite provider, check the facts that determine whether it will work for you:
- Availability at your exact address, rather than broad regional coverage claims.
- Actual speeds and latency where you will use the service.
- Monthly price, data terms, equipment costs, and installation requirements.
- Whether portability or resilience matters for your use.
Amazon’s published details do not supply enough comparable current plan information to rank Leo against those alternatives.
