Amazon cloud storage is data storage hosted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and accessed over a network. It is an umbrella term, not the name of a single product: Amazon S3 is AWS’s best-known object-storage service, while AWS also offers file and block storage for different needs.
What does “Amazon cloud storage” mean?
Cloud storage describes a model in which a provider runs storage infrastructure and makes data available over the internet or a private network connection. AWS manages the underlying infrastructure, while customers or applications use the storage for their data. AWS explains the model in its cloud storage overview.

In everyday conversation, “Amazon cloud storage” often refers to Amazon S3. More precisely, it can mean AWS storage services generally, so naming the specific service is clearer.

What is Amazon S3?
Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) is AWS’s object-storage service. An object consists of data—such as a file—and associated metadata. Objects are stored in buckets and identified by keys within those buckets. AWS describes S3 as “storage for the internet” in its Amazon S3 user guide.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
How S3 storage works
- Create a bucket and select an AWS Region.
- Upload data to the bucket as objects.
- Use each object’s key to identify it within that bucket.
- Manage access with AWS permissions and controls, such as policies, IAM permissions, access control lists, and access points.
Buckets and objects are private by default, according to AWS’s S3 documentation. Access can be managed through the AWS Management Console, command-line interface (CLI), software development kits (SDKs), and REST API. The S3 user guide covers getting started and management; AWS’s S3 API documentation is for developers building with the service.
How is S3 different from other AWS storage?
AWS groups storage into object, file, and block models. They are designed for different ways of organizing and using data; S3 is not the only AWS storage option.

| Storage model | AWS examples | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Object | Amazon S3 | Stores data as objects, with metadata, in buckets. |
| File | Amazon EFS and Amazon FSx | Provides file-based storage for workloads that use files and directories. |
| Block | Amazon EBS | Provides block storage associated with Amazon EC2 workloads. |
AWS outlines these storage types and services in its cloud storage overview.

S3 storage classes are options for different access patterns and retrieval needs. AWS lists S3 Standard for frequent access; Standard-IA and One Zone-IA for less frequent access; Intelligent-Tiering for changing or unknown patterns; and Glacier classes for archiving.

Choosing a class means balancing how often data is accessed, how quickly it must be retrieved, resilience and placement requirements, and the applicable storage and access costs. Some archive retrievals are not immediate, so an archive class may not suit data that must be available like a frequently used drive. Features and prices can change; consult current Amazon S3 pricing for the workload rather than assuming one class is always cheapest.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Amazon cloud storage like a personal online drive?
Not necessarily. S3 is a technical storage service organized around buckets, objects, keys, permissions, and APIs—not automatically a consumer folder-sync or photo-library product. AWS documents tools for managing and integrating S3, but the phrase “Amazon cloud storage” alone does not identify a consumer file-sync experience. Amazon Photos and other consumer services are separate questions, and their current plans are not established here.
