It is intended to reduce the time the battery spends highly charged, which manufacturers say can support battery longevity. The trade-off is less charge available when you unplug.
What an 80% charging limit does
The limit is a charging target, not an instruction to drain the battery to 20% before plugging in. You can recharge whenever it suits you; lithium-ion batteries do not need to be fully discharged first. Apple describes a charge cycle as cumulative use equal to 100% of the battery’s capacity, which can add up across several partial discharges and charges. It also notes that capacity diminishes over complete charge cycles. Apple’s lithium-ion battery overview explains that charging is fast to about 80%, then slows.
With a user-set limit, routine charging stops near the selected maximum. That means less energy at unplug time, in exchange for less time spent near a full charge. The exact behavior can vary by device, so 80% should not be read as a guarantee that the displayed figure will always stop at precisely 80%.
How an 80% limit differs from optimized charging
A fixed limit and optimized or adaptive charging are different settings. A fixed limit aims to keep the battery near or below a chosen ceiling. Optimized charging instead adapts to a charging routine: the device may pause around 80% while it remains connected, then continue toward 100% near the expected unplug time. That approach aims to reduce time spent fully charged while still providing a full battery when needed. Apple’s iPhone guide describes optimized charging behavior.

Which phones offer a limit, and where to find it
Availability and menu names depend on the model. These manufacturer examples are not universal instructions for every phone, tablet, laptop, or vehicle.
| Device | Setting and path | Documented behavior |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 15 and later | Settings > Battery > Charging | Apple documents selectable limits from 80% to 100% in five-percentage-point steps. The phone charges to within a few percentage points of the selected limit, resumes if the charge falls more than five points while connected, and may sometimes charge to 100% to maintain accurate charge estimates. Apple Support published these details on December 8, 2025. |
| iPhone 14 and earlier | Optimized Battery Charging; see Settings > Battery | Apple documents optimized charging rather than the same selectable Charge Limit interface. It can delay charging past 80% in certain situations and aim to finish near the usual unplug time. Apple Support and the iPhone User Guide describe the feature. |
| Pixel 6a and later | Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization > Limit to 80% | Google says the limit prioritizes long-term battery health and suits people who usually finish the day with charge remaining. The phone fully charges every tenth cycle to help keep capacity readings accurate. Google Pixel Help documents the setting and behavior. |
For other devices, check the maker’s manual or current settings. Support, menu labels, and the way a limit is enforced can differ.

Should you limit your battery to 80%?
Consider enabling the limit if your normal day leaves you with charge to spare and you value reducing routine time near full charge. If you regularly need nearly all of the battery, or expect a long day away from power, raise or disable the limit when extra runtime matters. Google specifically recommends its Pixel 80% option for people who usually end the day with charge remaining and says to turn it off when longer battery life is needed. Google Pixel Help
There is no universal figure for how many extra months or years an 80% limit adds. Apple and Google explain the general longevity rationale, but the outcome depends on the device and factors including use, temperature, and charging patterns. Apple also notes that overheating can affect charging behavior. Apple’s battery overview and iPhone Charge Limit support page do not quantify a lifespan gain from this setting.

Why a phone may charge past 80%
A brief or occasional charge above the target does not necessarily mean the limit is broken. Apple says supported iPhones may sometimes charge to 100% to maintain accurate charge estimates. Google says Pixel phones with the limit enabled fully charge every tenth cycle to preserve accurate capacity readings. Those behaviors are deliberate calibration exceptions, not necessarily evidence of a fault. If charging behavior differs from the documented behavior for your model, check that the limit remains enabled and consult the device maker’s current support guidance.
