AI edge computing, commonly called edge AI, means running AI or machine-learning functions on or near the devices and network nodes where data is generated or used. The AI model may be created or updated in the cloud and then run locally; some systems also let edge nodes learn from local data. Edge AI is therefore a way to distribute AI work—not a requirement to train and run every model on a device.
What “edge” means in AI edge computing
In computing, the edge is the part of a distributed system close to the source of data or the place where the data is used. It can include user devices, sensors, or network nodes. It is not one specific kind of box: which equipment counts as an edge node depends on the system’s architecture. NIST describes edge computing as processing near data sources rather than relying on a distant centralized cloud (NIST’s formal definition of edge computing).

AI edge computing applies AI or machine learning at those locations. NIST’s Edge AI project distinguishes between edge nodes that use AI functions created elsewhere and nodes that also learn from local data, potentially helping build models for other network entities or applications. Those are different architectural roles, not competing definitions of edge AI.

A common arrangement is to create or update a model centrally, then send it to an edge node to make predictions or decisions close to the data source. Other designs may also perform some learning or adaptation locally. Cloud and edge can cooperate: a system can assign model development, inference, data storage, and management to different locations instead of choosing only one.

- Equipped with 6 TOPS computing power, easy to convert a variety of neural network models based on TensorFlow, MXNet, PyTorch, and Caffe frameworks.
- Supports 4K@120fps (H.265/HEVC, VP9, AVS2, AV1), 4K@60fps (H.264/AVC) decoding and 4K@60fps (H.265/HEVC, H.264/AVC) encoding, easy to deal with HD video tasks
- Different types of traffic can be distributed to different network interfaces: one for external Internet connection and another for internal LAN, which improves security and management flexibility
The best division depends on the application’s response-time needs, connectivity, available compute and energy, privacy requirements, and the consequences of delay or outage. Edge AI does not automatically mean that data never leaves a device or that the cloud is not involved.
Why run AI near the data?
Local processing can reduce the time spent sending data to a distant service and waiting for a response. It can also reduce unnecessary network traffic and help a system continue to perform some functions when connectivity is limited. These characteristics can matter when software interacts with sensors, machines, or other parts of the physical world. NIST identifies autonomous vehicles, teleoperation, industrial control, and advanced networking as areas for exploring edge AI and edge learning.

These are potential benefits, not guarantees. Actual response time, reliability, energy consumption, and privacy depend on the implementation and the network. For example, a local model may avoid a round trip to the cloud for each prediction, but it still needs suitable hardware, software, and updates.

Edge AI compared with cloud-first and hybrid designs
“Edge-first” and “cloud-first” describe where a system places its main workloads; they do not determine the right design for every application. A hybrid design assigns work to both. Use these questions to assess the trade-offs:

| Decision factor | What to assess |
|---|---|
| Response time | How quickly must the system respond, and can a network round trip be tolerated? |
| Connectivity | What should continue to work if the connection is slow, intermittent, or unavailable? |
| Device resources | Can the available hardware run the model within its compute, memory, storage, and power limits? |
| Network use | How much data must be transferred, and what are the bandwidth and transfer-cost implications? |
| Privacy and security | Where should data be processed, what must be transmitted, and what protections are needed at each location? |
| Operations | How will models and software be updated, devices monitored, and failures handled across locations? |
| Failure consequences | What happens if a device, network link, or central service becomes unavailable? |
These are decision factors, not a universal ranking: an application may keep time-sensitive inference at the edge while relying on cloud infrastructure for other tasks. NIST’s Edge AI project and edge-computing definition describe the architectures and constraints behind this kind of division.
Constraints and risks to account for
Compared with centralized infrastructure, edge devices and nodes may have less computing power, memory, storage, energy, and network bandwidth. Learning across edge nodes adds challenges: local data may not have the same distribution, communication may be constrained, and privacy requirements can limit how data is shared. NIST discusses these issues in its Edge AI project.

Keeping raw data near its source can reduce transfers, but local processing alone does not prove that data is private or secure. Data that is transmitted still needs appropriate privacy protections and security controls. Distributing hardware and software across many locations also makes updates, monitoring, physical protection, and consistent operation more demanding. NIST examines privacy considerations in Analyzing Data Privacy for Edge Systems.
