It offers a straightforward enable-or-disable control and a startup-impact label. Use Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns when you need to investigate auto-start entries beyond that everyday list. In Autoruns, uncheck an entry to disable it; do not delete its configuration unless you understand it and have a reason to remove it.
Task Manager or Autoruns: which should you use?
| What you need to do | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stop a listed app from launching at sign-in | Task Manager | It provides a simple Enable or Disable control for registered startup apps and shows a startup-impact label. Microsoft’s Windows startup-app guidance says Task Manager and Settings manage the same registered-app list. |
| Decide which listed apps to investigate first | Task Manager | Its impact column classifies startup resource use. Treat the label as a clue, not a recommendation to disable an app. |
| Inspect an auto-start entry missing from the everyday list, or examine other auto-start locations | Autoruns | It covers more locations, including logon entries, Explorer extensions, services, and scheduled tasks, and provides ways to inspect an entry and its location. Microsoft’s Autoruns documentation describes these capabilities. |
| Disable an entry while investigating it | Task Manager for a listed app; Autoruns for a broader entry | Disable or uncheck the entry rather than removing its configuration. In Autoruns, Delete removes the auto-start configuration. |
Neither tool can tell you whether a particular app is unnecessary for your work. A high-impact label describes resource use during startup; it does not establish that the app is safe to turn off or that disabling it will produce a noticeable improvement on your PC.

How to disable a listed startup app in Task Manager
- Right-click Start and open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Select the app you want to review, then choose Disable. To reverse the change, select it and choose Enable.
- Restart or sign in again, then check that the app’s features you rely on still work.
You can also open Settings > Apps > Startup to manage the same registered-app list. Task Manager is often more useful for triage because it includes the impact column.
What Task Manager’s startup-impact label means
Microsoft bases the label on an app’s CPU time and disk I/O during startup. The classification is a resource measure, not a judgment about the app’s importance. Microsoft’s Support page and Win32 startup-app documentation present slightly different disk thresholds, so the figures should not be treated as a precise cross-device ranking.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
| Label | Microsoft Support page | Microsoft Learn developer guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Less than 300 milliseconds of CPU time and less than 292 KB of disk use | Less than 300 milliseconds of CPU time and less than 300 KB of disk use |
| Medium | Less than 1 second of CPU time but over 300 milliseconds, or less than 3 MB of disk use but over 292 KB | 300–1,000 milliseconds of CPU time or 300 KB–3 MB of disk use |
| High | Over 1 second of CPU time or over 3 MB of disk use | More than 1 second of CPU time or more than 3 MB of disk use |
The Support and Learn pages differ at the low-to-medium disk boundary: 292 KB versus 300 KB. The Learn guidance uses rounded cutoffs, while the Support page gives the more specific figure. Task Manager may also show None or Not Measured; those labels do not mean an app has no effect or is safe to disable.
These thresholds are classification criteria, not a promise of a particular boot-time gain. The benefit of disabling an entry depends on the device, the app, and whether it needs to be ready at sign-in.

When Autoruns is the better tool
Use Autoruns when an item is not listed in Task Manager or Settings, or when you need to inspect a wider set of Windows auto-start locations. Its coverage includes logon entries as well as Explorer extensions, services, scheduled tasks, and more. It can show an executable’s properties and jump to its registry or file-system location.

Microsoft’s Autoruns documentation gives this inspection method: “To view the properties of an executable configured to run automatically, select it and use the Properties menu item or toolbar button.” The page is attributed to Mark Russinovich and dated June 17, 2026; it identifies Autoruns version 14.3.

Disable first; delete only deliberately
In Autoruns, unchecking an entry disables it. Delete removes its auto-start configuration instead. If you do not recognize an entry, do not remove it just because its name is unclear. Investigate its properties and location, and disable it only if you have a reason to test whether it is needed.
Check other startup locations before concluding an app is missing
Microsoft documents two Startup-folder routes for apps that are not shown in the standard startup controls:

- The per-user Startup folder for the current account.
- The all-users Startup folder for apps configured for every user of the PC.
See Microsoft’s Windows startup-app instructions for the folder locations and related registry locations. Registry changes can have unintended consequences; do not edit a registry entry simply because it appears to launch an app.
A cautious way to troubleshoot startup behavior
- In Task Manager, review enabled apps and ask whether each needs to be ready immediately after sign-in. Use impact to prioritize what to investigate, not to decide automatically what to disable.
- Disable one optional item at a time and keep a record of the change. Restart or sign in again and confirm that the PC and the relevant app features behave as expected.
- If an item is missing from the normal list, check the Startup folders Microsoft documents. Use Autoruns when you need broader visibility or entry details.
- In Autoruns, uncheck an entry for a reversible test. Delete its configuration only when you understand what it is and deliberately want it removed.
- If you are diagnosing a deeper app or service conflict, use Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure and restore normal startup after troubleshooting.
A clean boot is a troubleshooting method, not a routine performance tweak. Microsoft warns that functionality may be temporarily reduced during the process and that incorrect advanced boot-configuration changes can make a computer unusable. Follow the procedure carefully, track changes, and return Windows to normal startup when the investigation is complete.
